Chapter 84: The Five-Person Team
"Can it still work?" Midi frowned.
"This Teleportation Array could originally move ten people at once," Norton shook his head, sighing. "But the blast wrecked its magic pathways. What’s left can only handle one trip. The stabilizer’s broken too—better keep it under five people with light gear to be safe."
Midi didn’t ask about repairs. If possible, Norton would’ve said so already.
He turned to the Mountain Wolf Mercenary Group’s leader—Kelvin, a level 40 magic scholar.
Catching Midi’s sharp look, Kelvin hurried to explain: "They sent two teams earlier—twenty people total. Blood Blade’s boss Pierce led them himself."
"Twenty…" Midi paused.
The Teleportation Array held Infinite Magic. Once active, it could move hundreds. Blood Blade Mercenary Corps’ five hundred troops could’ve easily flooded the Palace.
Even while fighting Mountain Wolf, they could’ve planted explosives, retreated into the array like a staged withdrawal, then blown everything up.
No adventurer would charge into a ticking bomb zone. Blood Blade could’ve escaped cleanly.
There were plenty of ways to get everyone inside.
Yet they’d only sent twenty.
What did that mean?
"Sending a tiny squad to search the whole Palace? They’re either bold or well-informed," Odel remarked. "Must have solid intelligence to dodge fights, avoid traps, and grab whatever heritage they’re after."
"True," Midi nodded.
Odel’s logic held, but Midi dug deeper. He suspected their target couldn’t be seen—not even by Blood Blade’s own members.
Those sent weren’t just elites. They were likely Blood Blade Thieves Guild insiders. Sealing the array wasn’t just to block rivals—it kept most of their own Mercenary Corps out too.
What treasures or Palace’s heritage in the Elven Kingdom justified this? Why the mix of bold moves and caution?
Midi frowned. In his past life, the Elven Kingdom exploration hadn’t caused major waves. The Morning Star Mercenary Corps rose as expected—no surprises. Yet now, Blood Blade acted strangely.
What heritage was this?
He stared at the array, willing answers from its flickering runes.
Across the room, Kelvin watched Midi.
The Mountain Wolf leader kept up appearances—thanking allies, directing cleanup—but inside, a storm of emotions raged.
He knew Blood Blade’s strength firsthand. They’d clashed hours ago. His group had lost badly.
His team had found the Palace of Moonlight first.
Discovering the array, Kelvin hadn’t celebrated. While magicians studied activation, he’d fortified the place—traps in every passageway, barricades at doors. Not impregnable, but solid.
The Mountain Wolf Mercenary Group prioritized formations and tactics, renowned for their cautious and steady style. Yet under these conditions, the Blood Blade Mercenary Corps shattered Mountain Wolf’s defenses in mere hours, overturning the situation and driving them completely out of the Palace of Moonlight—a clear testament to their strength.
That the Blood Blade Mercenary Corps acted like bandits in Tucker Town, making several top-tier mercenary corps stay silent, was no coincidence.
Their long-range firepower suppression alone left the Mountain Wolf Mercenary Group utterly overwhelmed.
But moments ago?
This unassuming youth had single-handedly charged into a fireteam of roaming gunslingers and ammunition experts, shattered it instantly, then plunged into the Palace to stop an explosion.
Kelvin couldn’t decide if the boy was fearless or mad—he simply couldn’t grasp his actions.
One thing was certain: this youth was formidable. The terse report from the messenger bird paled compared to witnessing such power firsthand, a power that made one shiver.
As Kelvin marveled, Midi’s voice cut through his thoughts.
"Activate the Teleportation Array. We enter now." Midi’s gaze swept over the adventurers, his tone ironclad.
"But only five can go…" Odel hesitated.
"Five must go. There’s no other chance." Midi shook his head. "Even if we find another Teleportation Array, it’s pointless. If they’ve obtained Palace intelligence, they’ll trigger its defenses immediately. All external arrays will fail. This is our only window."
"Then include me and Alyn," Odel nodded.
Though uneasy, days of battle had cemented her trust in Midi. This youth wasn’t reckless—every move was calculated. If he chose to enter, tactics were already in place.
"I’ll join," Norton added. "The place will be riddled with mechanisms."
Though weak in combat, the alchemist’s mastery of alchemy and magic arrays surpassed even Midi’s. With the Palace’s traps, his skills were indispensable.
"Mr. John, Captain Odel," Kelvin interjected calmly, "Might I accompany you?"
Midi’s piercing gaze locked onto him.
Kelvin held the stare, outwardly composed yet feeling laid bare.
"Level 40 magic scholar?" Midi asked.
"Correct. Your team lacks a cleric and can’t sustain prolonged battle of attrition. I can remedy that—and synergize with the alchemist." Kelvin had rehearsed every word.
A magic scholar’s strength lay in enhancing items. A basic recovery potion became twice as potent in their hands, or could be aerosolized to heal the whole team.
No doubt, this profession perfectly complemented Midi’s squad.
The Morning Star Mercenary Corps might have magic scholars, but none matched Kelvin’s prowess in combat, support, strategy, or command—this was a top-tier mercenary’s confidence.
"What does Mountain Wolf demand?" Midi cut to the chase.
_So he saw through me._
Kelvin hid his surprise. Mountain Wolf had bled heavily in this fruitless clash. This was their last ticket into the Palace—he’d claw his way in.
The boy’s sharpness only confirmed Kelvin’s suspicion: Midi was nobility, likely great nobles. Only they wielded such command, calm under fire, and unyielding authority.
"One-fifth of the spoils by headcount. You claim priority on overlapping items. We’ll negotiate the rest with Odel," Kelvin stated.
He knew what great nobles could offer—riches beyond adventurers’ wildest dreams. Midi hadn’t risked coming to the Elven Kingdom for petty treasures, but for relics no mere mercenary corps could claim.
Midi glanced at Odel. At her subtle nod, he extended a hand. "Then welcome the Mountain Wolf Mercenary Group as the third member of our alliance, after Morning Star and Hawk Brigade."
"Move out. Now."
The damaged Teleportation Array flared to life once more.
