Chapter 75: Overwhelming Force
The members of the Blood Blade Corps couldn’t believe their eyes.
How could this freckle-faced boy, who still looked like a youth, wield such immense power?
The Explosive Flame Wave Sword’s destructive force was staggering, and its range defied logic!
The Guard Captain swore it was the most absurd Explosive Flame Wave Sword he’d ever seen—even the level 38 Asura ranked second in the Blood Blade Thieves Guild’s assassin hierarchy couldn’t unleash such a devastating strike!
And weren’t Asuras supposed to be blind? Yet the boy’s sharp gaze showed no impairment!
Confusion, terror, shock, and disbelief churned within the Blood Blade members.
But Midi offered no explanations. Retreating from the magic-drained street, he repositioned and gathered energy again. A second Explosive Flame Wave Sword erupted, its roaring flames devouring another swath of territory. Though inferior to Fina’s Magic Beam, the Ultimate Intent amplified Midi’s attacks beyond any ordinary Asura, rivaling a level 40 Elementalist.
He utterly dominated the Blood Blade base. Heavy machine gun towers became useless—their bullets couldn’t reach him, and no barricade or wall could shield against the inferno. Trapped, the Blood Blade forces had no retreat. Hiding meant being blasted to ash alongside their buildings.
"Kill him! Charge! Whoever slaughters that brat gets promoted to two hundred-man team captain!" roared the battle-hardened Guard Captain. Their only hope was to close the distance and overwhelm Midi in close combat.
At once, the entire Blood Blade Mercenary Corps surged like enraged hornets. Roaming gunslingers and gunners flanked from both sides, assassins slithered through shadows, while clerics advanced behind tower shields, guarding Demon Swordmen.
Midi’s third strike was ready. A cold glow flashed from his Sword Edge, unleashing a frost-laden gust that crystallized into icy blossoms midair—the Asura skill, Ice Blade Wave Sword. Though weaker than Ghost Cry’s Ice Binding Array, its vast reach, enhanced by Ultimate Intent, froze the street solid, crippling the pursuers’ speed.
Seizing the moment, Midi retreated.
"Don’t let him escape!" the Guard Captain bellowed, knowing failure meant his head. The Blood Blade Thieves Guild’s ruthless heritage tolerated no weakness. Driven by desperation, the Blood Blade forces trudged through the ice storm.
Unnoticed by them, the high-level adventurers of the Morning Star Mercenary Corps observed everything from a shadowed alley. Odel, their female leader, watched Midi obliterate the Blood Blade base’s gates and effortlessly lead over a hundred enemies on a chase. Her composure cracked—breath shallow, mind reeling.
Who _was_ this boy?
No—what kind of being was he?
And what monstrous organization was this Hawk Brigade he spoke of?
The agreed time had arrived, but the distracted Odel had forgotten about time for the first time in battle.
Not only that, none of the elite members behind her thought to remind their dazed leader – they too were staring blankly!
"Little beauty, speechless? Heart racing? Wanting more? Heh, I get it…" A gravelly voice teased suddenly, "But the timing’s perfect! Why aren’t you grabbing your share? Remember – twenty-eight split, your twenty, my eighty!"
A black crow had appeared on the eaves, winking exaggeratedly at Odel.
The half-Elf gunslinger’s pale face flushed red. She normally hated being mocked, let alone flirted with. Yet somehow Robin’s crude remarks failed to anger her.
This lasted mere seconds. After a few breaths, Odel’s gaze sharpened again. She gestured sharply and hissed, "Attack!"
Twenty-plus elite members of Morning Star Mercenary Corps erupted silently from shadowed alleys.
They moved swiftly without sound, using street obstacles for cover. Within moments they pressed against Blood Blade base’s outer walls.
Two burly Blue Fist Saints braced against the wall, knees bent and hands cupped. Odel and Alyn charged first, stepping onto the men’s palms. With two muffled grunts, the petite half-Elves launched skyward.
The unrelated sisters landed soundlessly inside the compound.
More Morning Star members scaled the walls. Some used Blue Fist assistance, others threw grappling hooks, while a few clung to stonework like geckos.
Such were adventurers – not first-rate warriors, but each possessing unique skills for combat and infiltration.
With unmanned towers and no machine gun fire, mere walls couldn’t stop them.
Soon Morning Star Corps penetrated the base unimpeded.
Though the assault progressed smoothly, unease churned in Odel’s heart.
This fortress once deemed unbreakable by small mercenary groups now stood nearly empty.
Every capable fighter had joined Midi’s pursuit.
To Blood Blade Corps, cowering in base meant certain death against Midi’s assault. Only gravely wounded explosion victims and unconscious stragglers remained.
Was battlefield cleanup Morning Star Mercenary Corps’ role?
Odel sighed deeply. That guy truly needed no help from them – their earlier involvement had been nothing but a test.
Yet even through her resentment, the mission demanded perfection.
No – precisely because it was simple, mistakes became unforgivable.
Focusing fiercely, Odel led her team through meticulous cleanup:
Sealing entrances against scavenger corps.
Executing mortally wounded enemies.
Capturing high-ranking officers.
Securing spoils, supplies, and gold coins.
Most crucially – finding Blood Blade’s prisoners and gathering Elven Kingdom intelligence.
Morning Star Mercenary Corps systematically cleared the battlefield.
Intel and rescues formed Midi’s true objective behind his provocation tactics.
Destroying the base required only finding high ground for Asura’s ranged bombardment.
But that would leave nothing intact.
Midi’s past-life experience with Blood Blade Thieves Guild taught their ruthless ways – what they couldn’t keep, none would possess.
Pure firepower suppression without engagement would make Blood Blade’s Guard Captain destroy everything and slaughter captives once defeat seemed inevitable.
Midi refused such outcomes.
He remained a cool-headed commander.
But no life-disregarding monster.
Crises might demand sacrificing few to save many.
But here? No crisis existed.
The imperiled were Blood Blade’s fools, while Midi held absolute advantage.
Why permit unnecessary deaths?
If rescue proved possible, rescue they must!
Thus Midi crafted his decoy plan – luring away Blood Blade Mercenary Corps’ forces while Odel took the undefended base.
Now Blood Blade’s treasures, Elven Kingdom maps, exploration logs, and intel all belonged to Morning Star Mercenary Corps. The underground prison was found – two guards who hadn’t joined Midi’s chase fell instantly to Morning Star elites.
Everything unfolded as Midi predicted.
Odel spearheaded the prison assault, eliminating guards personally.
In gloomy cells, the gunslinger observed prisoners – familiar faces and strangers alike. Their mixed gazes of confusion, fear, hope and gratitude made her chest swell with purpose.
So what if it’s cleanup?
Her team had flawlessly completed Midi’s mission – every captive saved!
Remembering the ordinary-looking boy earnestly explaining tactics over maps, Odel’s lips curved slightly.
Don’t underestimate Morning Star Mercenary Corps! She mentally declared.
Clearing her throat, she addressed the freed prisoners: "Hawk Brigade and Morning Star Mercenary Corps have taken Blood Blade base! You’re free!"
