Chapter 128: City of Rainbow Light
Four days after Fina’s "reward," the scouts finally brought the urgent report Midi had been waiting for.
The Sais family’s main force of thirty-four thousand troops – including twenty thousand from the Black Flame Legion, six thousand Azure Flame Iron Cavalry, and eight thousand Flame Guards – had finally assembled.
Location: City of Rainbow Light.
Situated on the vast Graka Plain, this city formed the southern counterpart to the Sais family castle in the north. Together they were called the Twin Cities of Sais. Capturing the City of Rainbow Light would mean seizing half the Sais family’s territory.
For centuries, the Sais family had spent centuries fortifying this critical southern gateway into an impregnable fortress.
Its walls stood twenty-five meters tall, wide enough for four horses to run abreast. The double-layered walls contained iron reinforcements and numerous passageways. During sieges, gunners, Elementalists, and Summoners could retreat inside the walls to counterattack through specially designed openings.
Catapults and ballistae mounted on the inner walls could strike targets four hundred meters away. Attacking forces would endure relentless barrages of crushing stones and armor-piercing bolts throughout the battle.
Most crucially, the fortress stood atop a massive magic vein spanning hundreds of kilometers. Eight towers housing magic arrays could activate protective barriers by channeling this power. When the rainbow-hued shields appeared, not even birds or insects could penetrate them – hence the city’s name.
Beneath this poetic name lay centuries of Sais family heritage and indomitable strength – their ultimate weapon against the Queen of Magic.
The unstoppable Golden Branch Legion finally halted before this colossal obstacle. Rather than attacking immediately, Midi ordered defensive preparations.
Beyond the catapults’ range, soldiers dug trenches and built fortifications before erecting barracks. Two detached divisions rejoined the main force, swelling their numbers to over fifty thousand. The spreading camp – with its barracks, fortifications, and defensive arrays – resembled a sudden city beneath the Golden Lion banners facing Sais family flags across the plain.
No clever tricks this time. Midi prepared for direct siege warfare. Though outnumbering the defenders, the attackers faced the fortress’ advantage. Yet the Golden Branch Legion’s secure base allowed retreat and regrouping if needed.
The Sais family ignored these preparations. Centuries-old defenses couldn’t be rivaled by week-old fortifications. They preferred enduring siege to risking ambushes. The distant invaders would exhaust supplies first.
But Midi wanted no drawn-out siege. The moment preparations finished, he attacked.
At dawn, as bugles sounded, sunlight dimmed and winds stilled. Magic arrays glowed across the Golden Branch positions, drawing power from underground veins to feed the central tower.
When magic peaked, Fina’s Magic Beam shot forth – the same beam that shattered Joseph family castles and breached Sais borders. Brighter than sunlight and sharper than swords, it struck Rainbow Light’s walls.
Water-colored light erupted above the city, rippling across the sky.
Fina’s razor-sharp attack abruptly lost speed when meeting the glowing barrier, like a hammer striking cotton that couldn’t deliver its force. The watery radiance seized this chance, swiftly enveloping the magical beam.
Two opposing magics clashed midair. After prolonged struggle, countless cracks spread across Fina’s beam until it shattered into glittering fragments under the relentless pressure, dissolving into nothingness.
“We blocked it!”
Instantly, cheers erupted from Sais family soldiers atop Rainbow Light City’s walls, their roars shaking the battlefield.
Though the armies hadn’t yet collided, their auras already clashed. This magical duel between beam and barrier held the significance of a champion’s pre-battle showdown. The victor would gain soaring morale; the defeated, crushing despair.
This wasn’t just any blocked attack—it was Fina’s Magic Beam.
The signature strike of the undefeated Queen of Magic!
Since achieving her infamous “one city per day” feat last year, all in Belmar Duchy feared Fina. With this humanoid superweapon in the Golden Branch Legion and Midi Asreks—the commander who annihilated Crimson Flame Legion—even hearing their names weakened Sais soldiers’ resolve. The family could do nothing about this.
Rather than face Golden Branch’s ferocity with such dread, Sais chose to fortify defenses while seeking openings. They abandoned vast territories to buy time, concentrating forces at Rainbow Light City for decisive battle.
Now, victory’s dawn finally glimmered.
“Hmph! Even the Queen of Magic fails before our magic array,” sneered the Scarred General on the battlements.
“Don’t celebrate yet,” interrupted the Azure Flame Iron Cavalry’s leader irritably. “Without repelling Hamilton, we regain nothing. Do you think cowering behind barriers wins wars?”
“What was that?!” The Scarred General’s face flushed with rage.
“Enough!” The white-haired Flame Guards commander barked. Having served Sais for fifty winters, his words carried weight. “Save your rivalry for the battlefield! Let battle records decide superiority!”
“Then we’ll see whose troops break the Golden Branch first!” The Scarred General’s eyes blazed as his rival clenched gauntleted fists.
While Sais forces rejoiced, the Golden Branch camp remained eerily calm.
Though common soldiers might despair at their queen’s failed strike, though officers might waver, Commander Midi Asreks showed no surprise. Beside him, the red-haired girl remained equally composed.
Only when their gazes met did cracks appear in their professionalism. The valkyrie-like Fina averted her eyes shyly; the ever-calm Midi’s heartbeat quickened.
But this was no time to recall stolen kisses.
Midi inhaled deeply, steadying himself. “You’ve prepared countermeasures, Fina?”
“Naturally.” She nodded, crimson locks swaying. A smile escaped her lips—nothing warmed her heart like their tacit cooperation.
Hearing this, Midi’s resolve hardened. Time to end things—not just with Sais, but also the shadowy third force manipulating events.
“Tomorrow,” he declared softly, “we strike decisively.”
As he spoke, an obsidian crow pierced through stormclouds, crossing leagues to perch atop Eagle’s Nest’s highest spire.
A raven-haired girl awaited. Removing the message from its leg, she scanned the note and smirked. “Relay the order. Hawk Brigade mobilizes—all regiments.”
