Chapter 119: Surprise Attack on Flowing Water County
Within mere minutes, the ice surface began forming. Adventurers drained of magic retreated as replacements smoothly took positions in the Eye of the formation, silently extending the bridge. After two rotations, it was complete.
This ice bridge floated above the river, over 1.5 meters thick, supported by deeper currents below. It could withstand Light Cavalry charges. The Ice Mages widened its connection point to the opposite bank for easier troop deployment. Crucially, the bridge was dyed dark gray instead of white.
Though patrols roamed Flowing Water County and watchtowers scanned the area, the blackened bridge remained invisible in the night.
Preparations continued. A master artisan from Xuzu in Arad stepped forward, skilled in ice manipulation. Using specialized tools and powders, he reinforced the structure before nodding approval.
Combining costly materials, an hour of Ice Mages’ labor, and expert reinforcement, Midi had forged an ice bridge across the raging Daim River under Black Flame Legion’s watch. Against all odds, he’d created a path for Heavy Knights and an unprecedented ambush opportunity.
Though ready, Golden Branch cavalry hesitated. Twenty thousand enemies waited across the river against their two thousand. Charging seemed suicidal. Worse, the fragile bridge could be destroyed, trapping them. Without retreat, how could they face walls, towers, and overwhelming numbers? They feared not death but meaningless sacrifice.
Midi broke the stalemate by riding to the formation’s forefront atop his Blood Fang Panther from Eagle’s Nest. The beast’s green eyes glowed in darkness, crimson fangs bared, yet it stayed silent under the black-haired boy’s control. Clad in heavy armor with greatsword in hand, rider and predator stood like a spear’s tip at the vanguard.
Adventurers followed first—commoners like Odel, Alyn, and Kelvin, trusting the miracle-worker who defied odds. Their resolve shamed the elite cavalry. How could Golden Branch’s finest falter where mercenaries stood firm?
The formation tightened instantly, becoming a massive spear aimed at Flowing Water County with Midi as its point. Seeing his army’s rising fighting spirit, Midi smiled. This was the battle-hardened force he needed.
"Follow my blade! I bring victory and glory!" His sword flashed downward.
The charge began. As Golden Branch hooves struck Daim River’s west bank, most Black Flame soldiers slept. Led by Midi’s panther, cavalry surged through streets like tidal waves, veterans forming dagger-sharp units that shredded patrols.
By the time awakened troops donned armor, flames already consumed half the granaries. Flowing Water County, a forward base stuffed with supplies, burned brightly.
Scarred General Xinda Sais trembled with rage. His "impenetrable" defenses had fallen! Grabbing the duty centurion, he roared, "How? No alarms! Did they fly?"
"They…used an ice bridge near the dock," the soldier choked.
"Destroy their retreat! Leave none alive!" the general ordered.
Elemental mages bombarded the bridge with Flame Impact spells. Within minutes, cracks spread, melting ice collapsed into rapids. Simultaneously, Black Flame troops rushed to seal county exits, setting barricades.
The general saw Midi’s fatal flaw—no escape route. Rather than chase cavalry through streets, he deployed three long-spear formations to block key gates. These anti-cavalry units could withstand Heavy Knights even in Urban Warfare.
With twenty thousand against two thousand in familiar terrain, Scarred General felt certain. He’d capture these fools and make them suffer.
"Let them taste Black Flame’s might," he sneered, imagining Midi bound before him.
