Chapter 20: Breakthrough
The memory of Gu Qianshan stepping on Xue Feishuang’s head, his blade poised for execution, ignited a fury so intense that Zhang Yang could barely contain it.
He wanted to kill.
To kill with pleasure.
To kill with abandon.
Gu Qianshan, however, was no coward.
His infamy came from refining people alive.
A demon who had slaughtered countless foes—he would not back down.
With a flick of his wrist, he pulled another pill furnace from his storage bag and hurled it at Zhang Yang.
Crack!
Zhang Yang tore through it.
He was unstoppable.
Gu Qianshan threw another.
Crack!
He retreated and threw yet another.
Crack!
Throw.
Crack!
Throw.
Crack!
But no matter how many furnaces he threw, Zhang Yang smashed through every single one of them.
With every step forward, Zhang Yang’s rage intensified.
And Gu Qianshan felt intense fear.
Crack!
One after another, four pill furnaces shattered under Zhang Yang’s fists.
It was clear that aside from the Skyfire Pill Furnace, none of Gu Qianshan’s furnaces could withstand Zhang Yang’s punches.
Gu Qianshan could no longer throw anything—Zhang Yang charged in aggressively.
“Kid, what are you boasting about?”
A flaming spear appeared in Gu Qianshan’s hand as he thrust it fiercely at Zhang Yang.
Zhang Yang responded with a simple punch.
The explosion of the Five Divine Powers surged forth.
Perhaps due to the continuous battle, fatigue had begun to set in. This time, the punch lacked the full force of his peak strength.
But!
Crack!
The spiritual weapon—the flame spear—was no exception. It was instantly destroyed.
Zhang Yang closed the distance between himself and Gu Qianshan.
“You can only refine people? Then let me refine you!”
He grasped Gu Qianshan’s head with both hands and twisted.
With a sickening snap, Gu Qianshan’s head turned ninety degrees.
He was dead.
“Spit!”
“Scum!”
“You have no face to face the world.”
Zhang Yang spat on the ground and turned back to embrace Xue Feishuang.
He could still hear her faint heartbeat.
Each beat filled him with both excitement and fear—afraid that at any moment, it might stop.
A moment later, the rumbling inside the Skyfire Pill Furnace subsided, and the lid slid open.
A wisp of medicinal aura floated out, entering Xue Feishuang’s mouth and nose.
Zhang Yang clearly felt the medicinal aura gather at her heart, swirling and lingering, attempting to nourish her heartbeat.
But the strength of the aura was insufficient.
Even so, Xue Feishuang’s heartbeat grew slightly stronger.
The medicinal aura then fell upon Zhang Yang.
“I don’t need it,” he said, waving his hand.
Chi Zhenyi’s voice echoed, “With your injuries, if you don’t fully recover, obtaining a drop of sacred life water in the shortest time possible will be nearly impossible.”
Hearing this, Zhang Yang calmly accepted the medicinal aura.
As it entered his body, his wounds stopped bleeding. A tingling sensation spread through him as flesh began to regenerate.
“The Skyfire Pill Furnace once refined a life-saving divine pill,” Chi Zhenyi explained. “But this is just residual medicinal aura—its effects are limited. You could use Gu Qianshan’s pills.”
“Not happening,” Zhang Yang refused resolutely. “His pills were made by refining people. Eating them would be like consuming a person. I, Zhang Yang, will never do that.”
Chi Zhenyi chuckled. “You have quite a principle. Then use your own pills.”
Zhang Yang retrieved the healing pills Xue Feishuang had given him and swallowed three.
With the combined effect of the medicinal aura, he recovered about seventy-five percent.
But he couldn’t afford to wait any longer.
“Do you know where to find the sacred life water?” he asked.
Chi Zhenyi pondered for a moment. “In the Vast Forest, there is the Howling Wolf Palace. It was once a top sect under the Vast Sacred Land. After the Sacred Land fell, they continued their inheritance and claimed to rebuild in the Vast Forest. They possess sacred life water.”
“I’ll go find them.”
Zhang Yang carried Xue Feishuang and prepared to leave.
“Do you know where the Howling Wolf Palace is?”
Chi Zhenyi sighed. “I don’t. I’ve only heard of it.”
Zhang Yang thought of the Golden Ape King.
In this Vast Forest, the Ape King would surely know where to find it.
However, as he looked around, he felt a bit lost—unsure of the way back.
Surrounded by ancient trees and vibrant flowers, he grew anxious.
Just then, the Spirit Lantern Treasure Tree suddenly rushed out, all its branches pointing south.
“Thank you.”
Zhang Yang handed a handful of healing pills to the Spirit Lantern Treasure Tree and dashed southward.
He had stored away the Skyfire Pill Furnace and Gu Qianshan’s storage bag, but he had thrown all of Gu Qianshan’s pills into a pit, covering them with stones.
Chi Zhenyi floated out of the pill furnace, witnessing the entire process. He sighed.
“Kid, you’re lucky. Befriending a spirit tree in the Vast Forest will bring you great fortune.”
Zhang Yang continued southward.
Along the way, there were three instances where Chi Zhenyi had to remind him, preventing the directionally challenged Zhang Yang from going astray.
After nearly half an hour, a series of palaces appeared ahead, surrounded by a vast courtyard.
In the distance, a massive stone tablet stood before the courtyard, towering ten meters high.
On it, three words were inscribed—
Howling Wolf Palace!
Before Zhang Yang could approach, a young guard ran over and shouted—
“Howling Wolf Palace! Outsiders are strictly forbidden from coming near. Leave at once!”
Zhang Yang stepped forward. “Please go inside and inform them that I have come to request a drop of sacred life water.”
He then displayed over two hundred Blood Spirit Flowers.
“These Blood Spirit Flowers will serve as payment.”
The guard’s eyes lit up at the sight. His breathing quickened.
Without hesitation, he reached out to snatch the flowers.
“I’ll take the Blood Spirit Flowers, and you can leave.”
“Now go!”
Zhang Yang’s gaze darkened.
In an instant, his hand shot forward—
Slap!
The guard flew backward, crashing to the ground.
Zhang Yang had held back, not killing him.
However, this action immediately alerted a passing patrol team.
Their eyes locked onto Zhang Yang, weapons drawn.
“How dare you attack someone at the Howling Wolf Palace?! Take him down!”
“No one has ever dared to provoke the Howling Wolf Palace.”
“Attack!”
The patrol team charged forward.
Zhang Yang quickly secured Xue Feishuang on his back with a strap, whispering, “Sister, we will fight side by side.”
He stepped forward, activating One Step of Mountains and Rivers.
Whoosh!
Before the patrol team could even get close, he had already dashed past them, reaching the courtyard gate.
“Stop him!”
A stern voice rang out as a middle-aged man rushed out, throwing a punch at Zhang Yang’s face.
Zhang Yang caught his fist effortlessly and flung him aside.
The man soared through the air, landing over thirty meters away.
“Close the gates!”
The man was still spinning mid-air when he shouted the command.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
The two massive courtyard doors slammed shut.
But in the face of One Step of Mountains and Rivers, their speed was far too slow.
Bang!
By the time the doors shut, Zhang Yang was already inside.
Before him stood over a hundred imposing warriors mounted on black wolves, blocking his path.
Zhang Yang frowned slightly. He wasn’t afraid of a fight, but with so many opponents, he risked unintentionally harming Xue Feishuang, something he absolutely would not allow.
Glancing around, his eyes landed on a stone pillar—half a meter thick and over five meters long, carved with the image of a fierce wolf— leaning against the left side of the door.
He walked over, grasped the pillar, and lifted it effortlessly. Surprisingly, it felt light enough to use as a weapon.
Holding the five-meter-long stone pillar horizontally, Zhang Yang felt more at ease, knowing it would shield Xue Feishuang from harm.
He shouted, “Come at me!”
However, the wolf cavalry merely stared at him, confusion written across their faces.
“Come on!” Zhang Yang swung the stone pillar. “If you don’t make a move, I will!”
Yet, the wolf cavalry remained frozen. Even the highly intelligent black wolves displayed strange expressions.
Zhang Yang noticed their gazes were all fixed on the stone pillar in his hands.
He shook the pillar slightly. “Does this mean something important to you?”
Silence.
He took a step forward, and the warriors instinctively stepped back.
After advancing over ten meters, an elderly man emerged from behind the wolf cavalry.
“I am Li Kunhai, the Palace Master of the Howling Wolf Palace.”
“I am Zhang Yang,” he replied, once again revealing all the Blood Spirit Flowers.
“I wish to trade these for a drop of sacred life water to save my sister’s life. Is that possible?”
Li Kunhai smiled. “That’s fine.”
Zhang Yang’s eyes widened. Was it really that simple?
Not only was sacred life water incredibly valuable, but wouldn’t the Howling Wolf Palace be furious over his forceful intrusion?
“Surprised?” Li Kunhai pointed at the stone pillar in Zhang Yang’s hands and explained,
“This is the Guardian Pillar of the Howling Wolf Palace.
Whoever can pull it from the ground is regarded as a respected elder of our palace.
Though you are not a member of our sect, this still establishes a connection, so a trade can be made.”**
Zhang Yang’s heart surged with joy. “Thank you, Palace Master!”
He hurried back and returned the Guardian Pillar to its original position.
However, after placing it down, he noticed it was slightly unsteady.
Without hesitation, he grasped it firmly and pressed it down with force.
Crack!
The Guardian Pillar settled completely into the ground.
Witnessing this, Li Kunhai’s eyelids twitched, and the wolf cavalry held their breath in shock.
