"I just want to watch you compete! You’re super awesome—you’d definitely win!" Song Zhitao wheedled.
Chuckling, Song Yutian heard Zhong Yueli add, "Your mother actually won first place in a show once."
"Really? Daddy’s not fibbing?" Song Zhitao’s eyes rounded.
"Since when has Daddy ever lied?" Zhong Yueli’s voice softened.
The child immediately demanded to watch her mother’s historic performance.
"What could a little bean like you understand?" Song Yutian protested, but ultimately surrendered.
Soon, their TV displayed edited highlights from the vintage variety show.
Zhong Yueli randomly selected an episode, skipped the rule explanations, and fast-forwarded to Song Yutian’s segment.
After a few moments of viewing, Song Zhitao inquired, "Mommy, that uncle helping you looks handsome. Was he your boyfriend then?"
Before anyone could answer, Zhong Yueli lightly tapped her forehead.
"Such notions at your age! Besides, Mommy would never fancy other uncles."
Later, Song Zhitao gasped upon spotting Zhong Yueli in the same episode.
"Daddy! Why weren’t you teamed with Mommy?"
"Hmm… Ask Mommy that," Zhong Yueli said, deflecting the question.
Song Yutian glanced up from her script. "Because we weren’t together then."
"Why? Didn’t Mommy like you?"
Zhong Yueli moved to tap her forehead again, but Song Zhitao dodged triumphantly. "Can’t catch me!"
"Think you’re safe from this?" Zhong Yueli teased, wiggling his fingers for a tickle attack.
As father and daughter tussled on the sofa, Song Yutian watched with a smile.
This, she mused, was the very essence of happiness.
