Chapter 19: Title
The weather in early September was still warm, and the contestants felt exhausted after spending a long time outdoors under the scorching sun.
The contestants returned to the villa in groups by program group cars, and since they were so tired, they spoke very little on the way back compared to the lively discussions during filming.
Finally, after about half an hour, everyone arrived at the hall on the first floor of the villa.
The Chief Director was already waiting in the hall, and after all the contestants sat down, he picked up the microphone.
"Next, I will announce everyone’s rankings for the first Match Day."
Unlike the audience members who had received some "spoilers," the contestants had no idea about their rankings, making the atmosphere a bit tense.
"First, we will announce the third place," the director began.
The director’s team deliberately stretched out his voice, and the camera swept across the expressions of each contestant.
"The third place is—Gong Yu and Wei Yao, with a net income of three thousand three hundred yuan!"
On screen, the expressions of the two were zoomed in for a close-up. Their reactions were somewhat similar, but upon closer inspection, Gong Yu looked more surprised, while Wei Yao appeared shocked.
Then, the two stood up and said polite phrases like "Thank you all for your hard work" and "Thank you, everyone."
The program group staff awarded the two of them the third-place trophy. The shape of the medal was a pair of overlapping wings, only palm-sized, lightweight, but beautifully detailed and cute.
Wei Yao and Gong Yu took the trophy and, under the staff’s direction, looked toward the camera for a photo.
Just before the shutter clicked, Gong Yu reached out and placed his hand on Wei Yao’s shoulder.
The contestants all clapped.
The reactions from the live stream viewers were much louder than those at the scene. Aside from many congratulatory comments for Gong Yu and Wei Yao, the most came from fans of Qin Yuanzhuo and Su Moying, who had assumed they had secured third place.
[Wasn’t third place supposed to go to Qin Yuanzhuo’s group? I swear they were still in third an hour before the competition ended!]
[How do I remember that Zhuo Ying’s group was always ahead of them? When did that change?]
[Everyone, don’t panic. Maybe Ying Ying actually moved up to second at the last moment!]
[Ying fans, let’s pray that Ying Ying made it to second place!]
Because Song Yutian and Gu Feng had far outpaced everyone else from the very beginning, the audience knew there was no suspense about who would take first place. Qin Yuanzhuo and Su Moying, who had been in third half an hour before the end, had either moved up to second or dropped to fourth.
Next, the director began to announce the fifth place.
It was clear that the program team knew how to reveal the rankings for maximum engagement.
After building up some suspense, the director revealed that fifth place went to Liu Tian and An Xin.
Liu Tian confidently spoke to the camera, "I’m sorry, fans. Our performance today wasn’t good enough. But we won’t give up!"
An Xin added, "We’ll work even harder tomorrow and aim for a top-three spot!"
The audience who had followed this group knew that their efforts in working together and attracting customers were no less than those of other groups. They were even the only team that had only eaten a few bites of steamed buns for lunch—they had truly given it their all.
However, Liu Tian and An Xin’s popularity was relatively low among the contestants, and their strategy hadn’t been outstanding, so their loss wasn’t surprising.
Their fans, however, remained supportive, comforting each other in the bullet comments.
[It’s okay! Liu Tian will do even better next time!]
[Xin Xin, keep going! You’re already amazing!]
[No worries, no worries! Liu Tian is here to learn from the seniors!]
Even though they lost, the atmosphere between the two remained positive, and they decided to pose for a group photo together.
"Next up—" the director paused for effect, "we will witness the crowning of the first champion of this show!"
For the audience, the winner was no longer a mystery, but the contestants still had no idea who had won.
Although their main purpose for joining the show was to promote themselves, gain fans, or increase their popularity, who wouldn’t want to win a championship?
After all, nobody likes to lose.
So, with the director’s words, all the contestants focused their attention. Those whose rankings had not yet been announced grew even more nervous.
"The champion is—" the director began, then suddenly cleared his throat, "Ahem, before we announce the results, let’s hear from the contestants whose scores haven’t been revealed yet."
The contestants, who had been anxiously waiting, voiced their complaints, and Liu Tian jokingly let out a "Phew."
The director, unfazed, smiled and continued, "Xixi, who do you think will win? You have to answer."
Shen Xi was briefly taken aback, realizing "Xixi" referred to her.
"Well…" Shen Xi hesitated. "I think it should be Moying."
"Why is that?" the director pressed.
Shen Xi replied, "Moying and Yuanzhuo are very popular, especially Moying. A lot of visitors would want to ride in her rickshaw."
The director nodded and turned to Su Moying. "So, Moying, what do you think?"
Su Moying thought for a moment. "I guess it’s Sister Xi. I spent time with Sister Xi yesterday, and I think she’s very wise and talented."
The director chuckled. "It seems our two girls are quite humble. They both picked each other. How about you, Yuanzhuo? What’s your guess?"
Qin Yuanzhuo smiled slightly. "I think it’s me and Moying."
"Oh?" The director raised an eyebrow. "Why do you say that?"
Qin Yuanzhuo answered with a smile, "I believe in my own abilities, and I also trust Moying’s popularity."
The director stretched out an exaggerated "Ohhh," then said, "It seems contestant Yuanzhuo is quite confident. Now, Mr. Gu, what do you think?"
Gu Feng, already prepared for the question, confidently replied, "I have always been sure of myself. So my prediction goes without saying."
"Hmm…" The director mused. "It seems Mr. Gu, like Yuanzhuo, is betting on himself. Now, Yutian?"
Song Yutian spoke softly. "Same as my teammate."
Hearing this, Gu Feng couldn’t help but smile slightly.
The director clapped his hands. "Great, great. Three contestants have predicted themselves as champions. Finally—Yueli?"
"…I choose Su Moying," Zhong Yueli said. "For the same reasons my teammate gave."
The director nodded. "Alright, since everyone has made their predictions, then—"
Clearing his throat a few times, he finally said, "Ahem, now let us reveal the answer. The theme of ‘Unexpected Challenges,’ the first Match Day… the champion is—"
As the director dragged out his announcement, the camera captured the expressions of everyone present.
