Chapter 026 The Return of the Condor Heroes
However, that smile was really familiar!
“It’s nothing special, just what anyone should do,” Su Rui came back to his senses and replied.
By this time, several people had already started taking out their phones, secretly photographing Su Rui and Ye Binglan. After all, there aren’t many people who stand up for justice these days, so this was quite memorable. Of course, among them were several reporters and editors from websites, for whom this was excellent reporting material.
The elderly lady whose bag was snatched had also rushed over, expressing her gratitude to Su Rui and Ye Binglan: “Thank you, thank you, I’m so grateful…”
Ye Binglan glanced at Su Rui and smiled: “Auntie, no need to thank me. If you want to thank someone, thank him. He’s the one who caught the thief.”
Su Rui raised his eyebrows, somewhat surprised by Ye Binglan’s gesture. This policewoman really knew how to be gracious. Could it be that his unintentional act of bravery had won her favor?
The elderly lady said excitedly: “I really don’t know how to thank you both. There were some important documents in this bag. You’re both so wonderful. If all couples in the world could be as kind-hearted as you two, that would be truly wonderful.”
Su Rui was stunned, only now realizing that the elderly lady had misunderstood, though it was indeed a beautiful misunderstanding.
Ye Binglan’s face showed a slight blush as she said: “Auntie, what are you saying? I don’t even know him. We just exchanged a few words.”
“Is that so? Well, you two make a great match,” the auntie smiled, looking at both Ye Binglan and Su Rui. “You really look like a married couple, and you’re both so kind-hearted. I wonder if either of you has a partner. If not, you should really consider each other.”
Typical gossipy old lady behavior – they’re always enthusiastic about matchmaking.
Su Rui stood by with a smile, saying nothing. Speaking up in this situation would clearly be unwise. Dealing with women of different personalities requires different approaches; there’s absolutely no one-size-fits-all strategy, unless you’re Kim Jong-un.
Ye Binglan’s face reddened even more, her expression showing a hint of embarrassment. She smiled and changed the subject: “Auntie, you should go buy your groceries. We’ll take care of things here.”
“No, no, you must give me your contact information. I’ll call my son another day and have him express our gratitude to you both.”
“Auntie, you’re too kind. Really, there’s no need,” Su Rui now looked like a respectful, well-mannered young man who loved the elderly, making the old lady like him even more.
“No, no, you two must give me your numbers,” the elderly lady insisted.
The two finally gave in to the old lady’s persistence and both provided their phone numbers. Of course, neither Su Rui nor Ye Binglan cared whether the old lady would actually invite them for a meal; it was all inconsequential.
“They’re such a perfect match, such a perfect match. A talented man and a beautiful woman, a golden boy and jade girl,” the old lady muttered admiringly as she walked away.
After the police took the bag snatcher away, Su Rui smiled at Ye Binglan and said: “Let’s go back and finish our breakfast. No need to waste it.”
If Lin Aoxue had seen Su Rui like this, she would have been incredibly surprised. After all, in that ice beauty’s mind, Su Rui was definitely a shameless, vulgar young man obsessed with chasing girls.
After this incident, Ye Binglan’s impression of Su Rui improved considerably. At least she didn’t dislike him as much as before. The beautiful policewoman had a strong sense of justice, and she liked men who shared that quality.
Although the old lady’s words created some awkwardness between them, the graceful Ye Binglan didn’t seem to mind much. After blushing briefly, she was fine. Su Rui cared even less – who wouldn’t enjoy being mistaken for having that kind of relationship with such an exquisite beauty?
“This meal is on me,” Ye Binglan said, picking up a soup dumpling with her chopsticks.
Su Rui raised his eyebrows: “Why should you pay? What kind of man lets a beautiful woman pay when dining together?”
“Because I want to thank you for your bravery. I’m a police officer; catching thieves is my job. But you’re different. Being able to do what you did isn’t easy,” Ye Binglan suddenly said seriously.
Su Rui laughed: “I accept your kindness. But in that case, you’ll have to treat me more often. How can one meal of soup dumplings be enough?”
“Then you’ll have to perform more acts of bravery,” Ye Binglan said with a smile. It seemed that since meeting Su Rui, her mood had improved considerably, with much of her gloom dissipating.
“Fine, to get you to treat me to meals, I’ll spend my whole life doing nothing but acts of bravery,” Su Rui knew how to seize the moment, making a joke that was neither too light nor too heavy, but just right.
Ye Binglan seemed to recall the old lady’s misunderstanding, and a barely noticeable blush crept up her snow-white neck.
Of course, don’t misunderstand that this was because she had feelings for Su Rui. It was simply that Ye Binglan had never dated before, nor had she ever had good feelings toward men, so the old lady’s misunderstanding made her somewhat uncomfortable.
After finishing breakfast, Su Rui indeed didn’t rush to pay, as freeloading off a beautiful woman was also a nice thing. This slightly surprised Ye Binglan, as other men in this situation would have rushed to pay the bill. It wasn’t that Ye Binglan liked men paying for her, but this incident made her see Su Rui in a new light.
As a police officer, Ye Binglan had a professional habit of focusing on details, and she could effortlessly see the bigger picture from small things. After this morning’s events, she discovered that this guy called Su Rui was indeed quite different from other men.
Seeing Ye Binglan stand up to leave, Su Rui quickly asked: “Where are you going now?”
“Binjiang Garden,” Ye Binglan casually mentioned where she lived. This wasn’t because her vigilance was low, but because she felt there was no need to hide it from Su Rui. After all, someone who would bravely catch a thief without fear of danger couldn’t be that bad – though this unguarded feeling was strange.
“That’s on my way. I’m staying at the Oriental Pearl Hotel next door.”
Su Rui maintained a calm exterior, but inside he was shouting: “What a heaven-sent opportunity! I get to walk with this beauty again!”
“That’s convenient then. The Oriental Pearl Hotel, that’s not cheap,” Ye Binglan was slightly surprised, seemingly not expecting Su Rui to be staying there.
“It’s fine, I’m just staying temporarily. The company is covering it.”
“Which company do you work for? The benefits seem good.”
“Bikang.”
“I see.” Ye Binglan suddenly asked: “I’ve heard that Lin Aoxue from Bikang is very beautiful. I haven’t met her. Have you seen her?”
Su Rui rubbed his nose: “Yes, she’s like a moving iceberg. You’d think the whole world owes her money. She’s far inferior to you.”
Whether it was female vanity at work or not, hearing Su Rui’s comparison, Ye Binglan’s mood inexplicably improved.
As the two were jogging across the bridge, four men approached from the opposite direction, walking side by side, showing no intention of making way.
Su Rui and Ye Binglan prepared to go around them, but these four clearly wanted to block their path. The sidewalk was only so wide, and the four of them occupied it entirely.
These four didn’t look like decent people. Each had a non-mainstream haircut, jeans with holes and metal rings; some had cigarettes dangling from their mouths, others were looking askance. Most dramatically, one of them was actually carrying nunchucks.
Damn, do they think everyone carrying nunchucks is Bruce Lee?
“What do you want?”
Su Rui spoke first, his body positioned half a step ahead of Ye Binglan, as if to shield her.
“Were you two the ones who took down my brother earlier?” The guy with the nunchucks asked with a sideways glance, his eyes scanning Ye Binglan up and down, before breaking into a meaningful smile.
“So you’re accomplices,” Su Rui sneered. “What do you want in broad daylight?”
“What do we want?”
“Nunchucks” gave a sinister laugh: “We’re here to avenge my brother, of course. If you both kneel down and call me ‘grandfather’ three times, I’ll let you go. Otherwise, each of you will lose a hand.”
Ye Binglan stood behind Su Rui, saying nothing.
“Of course, if this beauty agrees to sleep with me, you can keep your hands,” “Nunchucks” chuckled, his eyes roaming over Ye Binglan’s body, inwardly full of admiration. To encounter such an exquisite woman – it would be a waste to miss this opportunity!
Ye Binglan’s face turned cold. She hated being looked at that way.
Although she was a skilled fighter, facing four men would require paying a price for victory. However, given the situation, these thugs needed to be taught a lesson.
Before Ye Binglan could act, a scream was heard!
Su Rui’s leg had kicked “Nunchucks” squarely between his legs! The latter clutched his crotch and crouched down!
Men fear being hit in their vital parts the most. Even a light touch would be extremely painful, let alone such a heavy blow.
Ye Binglan’s eyes flickered slightly.
“It hurts, it hurts! Ah! Beat him to death, beat him to death!”
The other three seemed surprised that Su Rui, who appeared to be at a disadvantage, would strike first. They exchanged glances, then charged together!
They seemed to have targeted Su Rui as their main objective, completely ignoring the beautiful Ye Binglan standing to the side!
Just as Ye Binglan was about to act, Su Rui held her back, smiling faintly: “Just stay behind me.”
With her usual temperament, Ye Binglan would have rushed forward no matter what. But for some reason, when Su Rui said this, she didn’t move, only remaining vigilant.
Facing the attack of three men, Su Rui seemed completely unconcerned. He leisurely picked up the nunchucks from the ground, swung them a bit, and then…
One, two, three!
With just three simple swings, the three thugs were clutching their heads and crouching on the ground! Each had received one blow!
Ye Binglan’s eyes flickered again.
She could tell that Su Rui’s so-called “stick technique,” though appearing chaotic, showed speed, power, and precision that definitely couldn’t be achieved by a novice!
