Volume 2 Chapter 36: The Young Beast
Seeing that the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast was unaffected by the mist and was charging toward him even faster after breaking through it, Xu Qingfan’s heart sank. He realized he was in for a tough fight with this demon beast.
Although surprised, Xu Qingfan remained calm and skillfully maneuvered to draw the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast away, ensuring the battle wouldn’t accidentally harm Ting’er. While doing this, Xu Qingfan unleashed countless pink "Liuling Flowers" from his fingers to obstruct the Beast’s pursuit. However, the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast’s blue scales were extremely tough, and Xu Qingfan’s attacks could not harm it.
Seeing this, Xu Qingfan couldn’t help but smile bitterly. Both Xuan Xian and Bao Wei had warned him about the strength of the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast and even offered to help him deal with it. Although Xu Qingfan never underestimated the beast, he hadn’t expected it to be this powerful. The trip to the Southern Wasteland had boosted his strength, making him believe he could seek revenge alone. Driven by the desire to avenge his parents on his own, he had declined Bao Wei and the others’ offer. Now, he realized he might have overestimated his abilities.
Meanwhile, although Xu Qingfan’s swift movements kept the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast from being a direct threat, as Xu Qingfan kept his distance, the beast’s flames, frost, and close combat prowess couldn’t harm him. It roared repeatedly to slow down Xu Qingfan. Each roar had a powerful effect, unsettling Xu Qingfan and causing his movement to falter momentarily, allowing the Beast to close the distance.
What infuriated the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast even more was that whenever it got closer to Xu Qingfan, he would shoot those mist-releasing flowers again to hinder it. After the initial encounter, the Beast had developed a wariness for Xu Qingfan’s "Liuling Flower," so whenever it saw them coming, it tried to dodge, which only increased the distance between them.
Although the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast could run very fast, about as fast as Xu Qingfan, its large size made its movements less agile. So despite trying to dodge, it often got hit by Xu Qingfan’s "Liuling Flower," which made it roar in fury.
And so, with the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast chasing and Xu Qingfan fleeing, despite both attacking, neither could gain the upper hand for the moment.
In comparison, the situation was more unfavorable for Xu Qingfan. The deafening roar of the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast was more damaging to him. Moreover, as Xu Qingfan simultaneously used the "Art of Divine Action" and continuously conjured "Liuling Flower," his inner Spirit Qi was quickly depleted. Thus, if he continued to hold on like this, Xu Qingfan would surely lose.
While he fought on the move, Xu Qingfan kept thinking hard for a strategy, going over all the attack methods he knew but finding none that could harm the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast. Xu Qingfan’s main attack methods involved various exotic plants, but these had little effect against the Beast’s dense scales, and the mist produced by the "Liuling Flower" wasn’t very effective either. As for the "Finger of Wither and Flourish," it was a spell used to restrain cultivators, ineffective against a high-level demon beast like the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast.
As Xu Qingfan brainstormed, he noticed the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast no longer relied solely on its tough scales to withstand the "Liuling Flower" as it had initially. Instead, it dodged them as much as possible. Whenever a "Liuling Flower" hit it and created a mist, the Beast would rush out of the mist as quickly as possible, not daring to linger.
Seeing this, Xu Qingfan’s eyes lit up with hope.
"Could it be that the mist from the ‘Liuling Flower’ is still effective against the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast?" Xu Qingfan pondered silently.
Thinking this, Xu Qingfan decided to test his theory. He suddenly stopped, his fingers moving swiftly. Hundreds of "Bloodsucking Vines" sprang from the ground, wrapping tightly around the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast’s legs. Without pausing, Xu Qingfan conjured countless "Liuling Flowers" again before the Beast could break free from the vines, sending them flying toward it. It was as if a rain of flowers engulfed the barren Southern Wasteland.
Faced with the overwhelming storm of "Liuling Flowers," the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast, unable to shake off the "Bloodsucking Vines," could only brace itself. As the "Liuling Flowers" exploded one after another, a thick mist started to form around the Beast, obscuring its massive figure.
Soon, the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast tore through the "Bloodsucking Vines" and charged out of the mist toward Xu Qingfan with an enraged roar. Its once sky-blue eyes were now tinged with red, clearly showing its fury towards Xu Qingfan’s actions.
However, with careful observation, Xu Qingfan noticed that after emerging from the mist, the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast’s steps seemed somewhat unsteady for a brief moment. Seeing this, Xu Qingfan finally relaxed, realizing that the mist from the "Liuling Flower" did affect the Beast, just not enough previously due to the small quantity. The Beast could quickly recover after escaping the mist.
After discovering the strategy to defeat the enemy, Xu Qingfan repeated his tactics. Whenever he managed to distance himself from the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast, he summoned the "Bloodsucking Vine" to wrap around the beast’s legs and followed with relentless blasts of the "Liuling Flower." As soon as the beast broke free from the vine, it would retreat again. Xu Qingfan’s actions filled the clearing in Xu Family Village with the misty remnants of exploded "Liuling Flower" and the angry roars of the beast.
However, the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast was highly resistant to the effects of the mist. It took nearly an hour of repeated attacks before Xu Qingfan noticed any significant changes.
After an hour of continuous assault, the beast’s running was no longer swift, its roars losing strength each time, and it took increasingly longer to break free from the "Bloodsucking Vine."
Xu Qingfan wasn’t in much better shape. The continuous roars from the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast had severely affected his mind, and constantly summoning "Liuling Flower" for an hour had greatly depleted his Spirit Qi. He realized he couldn’t hold on much longer.
"It’s time to end this," Xu Qingfan thought to himself, sensing the depleted state of his own resources.
Just then, the beast managed to break free from the "Bloodsucking Vine" once more and charged at Xu Qingfan. Although its mind was clouded and steps unsteady, it had no intention of fleeing. It couldn’t bear to leave the Millennium Lingzhi of Xu Family Village, and despite the attacks, the pain from Xu Qingfan’s onslaught—and golden blood seeping from its scales—drove its fury, intent on tearing Xu Qingfan to shreds.
With all its might, the beast roared toward Xu Qingfan after emerging from the mist, hoping to cause him more harm. But this roar inadvertently sealed its doom.
This time, faced with the charging beast, Xu Qingfan did not retreat or summon the "Bloodsucking Vine." Instead, he advanced, rushing towards the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast. When he was within thirty feet, he endured the shockwaves to his spirit from the beast’s roar. Raising his right hand, he sent the "Ruler of Wither and Flourish" flying as a streak of azure light into the beast’s open mouth, penetrating into its chest and abdomen. Inside, the "Ruler of Wither and Flourish" wreaked havoc on the beast’s organs. In agony, the beast ignored attacking Xu Qingfan, rolling on the ground, wailing, and coughing up blood mixed with pieces of internal organs.
Initially, the "Ruler of Wither and Flourish" shouldn’t have entered the beast’s mouth so easily, but the beast was sluggish, having breathed in a substantial amount of mist. This lapse allowed Xu Qingfan’s sneak attack to succeed.
Seeing his surprise attack succeed, Xu Qingfan let out a long sigh of relief, almost collapsing to the ground in relaxation.
As time went by, the wailing of the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast grew weaker, its thrashing became more feeble, and after a long while, it finally stopped rolling and roaring, lying quietly on the ground with no movement.
Looking at the once bright eyes of the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast now dull and lifeless, Xu Qingfan knew that the demon beast that had once wiped out his Xu family clan was finally dead.
The once seemingly invincible and powerful demon beast from twenty-seven years ago was finally slain by him.
The blood vengeance of his parents, the Second Elder, and over two hundred clan members was finally avenged today.
Yet Xu Qingfan found no happiness in his heart; any fleeting joy was quickly replaced by a deeper sense of emptiness and confusion.
It was a unique emptiness and confusion that comes when a long-cherished goal is finally achieved, and a new one is nowhere in sight.
"Ooo…"
Just as Xu Qingfan was lost in thought, a weak beast’s cry sounded, full of sorrow. Xu Qingfan turned his head and saw a small creature that had always followed the Blue-eyed Cloud-foot Beast, stumbling toward its body. Despite being disoriented by the thick fog, its large eyes remained fixed on its mother, slowly inching closer with all its strength.
