At last, we’ve reached this point. Seeing everyone’s comments and general approval, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. When I first conceived this novel, there really wasn’t much of a grand plan. But later I thought— for all you well-read fellow book lovers, a cultivation story that’s just straight-up ascension might feel predictable, even dull after a while.
So I wondered, could I create a cultivation novel that blends in multiple elements? Structurally, maybe a bit of farming, perhaps the scholar’s path through the imperial examinations, or styles like master-disciple dynamics, or power-politics and court intrigue— anything that could merge with the cultivation world, I wanted to fuse it all together.
Two volumes in, the flow feels fairly smooth, and I think the integration worked out decently (if I may say so myself).
What’s more, keeping an upbeat rhythm throughout— advancing the plot while laying down foreshadowing and slowly filling in the pits— that’s not easy. All in all, as Volume Two comes to a close, the humorous parts still make people laugh, the serious parts remain weighty, and the emotional tone of the book stays rigorous. In other words, even though this story maintains a light and cheerful tone overall, at key moments, there will be blood-boiling passion, heart-wrenching sorrow, bold grandeur, and righteous fury.
This, too, is a multi-layered emotional structure.
Those who enjoy alternate-history-style stories can enjoy it. Those who seek the Dao through cultivation will find their share. Those who like gods and ghosts, monsters and mysteries, will feel right at home. Those who prefer something light and funny can read on happily.
It’s meant to be that kind of tale— enjoyable by young and old alike.
As for Toad Daoist in the upcoming third volume, I plan to give him a shot at reclaiming his former glory— though… it may only be temporary.
In Volume Three, new characters will appear. A youthful version of the Tree Demon Granny will enter the stage— her arc ties into the Blood and Flesh Altar of the Flame-Worship Cult.
Alright, no more spoilers.
I hope Volume Three will continue to receive your support, honored readers. After the strong recommendation period, the novel will be put on the shelves. As of now, Chufeng has already written enough words to meet the requirements for publication, but I’ve asked my editor to hold off for a bit— let’s wait until the recommendation wave passes.
And so, we move to Volume Three: “Dao, Dao, Dao… Heaven’s Dao, Earth’s Dao, Human Dao, Ghost Dao— I seek only my own Dao!”
