Chapter 467: The True Shadow Shield
Zardeth couldn’t wait, he stepped forward and chanted the spell following Jesse’s instructions.
He closed his eyes and then guided the power of shadow. Jesse thought it would be difficult, but he succeeded in making the Shadow Shield appear on his second try.
Even though it was only a brief moment, it was much stronger than when Jesse first attempted.
Next was Ursula. Ursula tried several times but couldn’t summon the Shadow Shield. Exhausted, she eventually had to give up and pass it on to Jalane.
Jesse saw Ursula looking apologetic at herself, and he had a feeling in his heart.
Shadow Magic is really connected to a person’s personality. Some people are just better at certain emotions, like indifference.
Now Jalane had started chanting. Holding the incantation recorded by Jesse, she tried and successfully guided the outline of a shadow on her first attempt. As she looked up to observe the quickly disappearing dark silhouette, Jesse sensed something was seriously wrong.
Her Shadow Shield… was not guided.
Jesse was stunned. Jalane’s first attempt had achieved an effect he had never been able to do with that spell.
His own shadow shield had never existed without his magical guidance!
Jalane quickly tried again, this time she had a serious face, gazing at the cold wall behind everyone reciting a spell. The Shadow Shield appeared around her as she waved her hand gently, but she stopped guiding, stopped her movements, and the shield existed on its own for five or six seconds, then slowly faded away.
"This is not a guiding spell…" Jesse said. "It seems that I haven’t been able to cast its full effect before."
He couldn’t help but ask, "Can you tell me, Jalane, what were you thinking when you were trying to cast this magic?"
"I think I can surpass you," Jalane said.
"That’s normal," Jesse chuckled. "How does this idea bring a positive emotion for casting this spell? I…"
"Do you think I’m arrogant?" Jalane asked again.
"I have never quite understood this magic, using it in a strange way from the beginning," Jesse sighed. "So I also want your help to find its true usage, clearly, I think you have found the right path."
"But you killed a demon general, Azgath, you are a hero talked about everywhere." Jalane said.
Jesse’s smile gradually cooled down.
Yes, if you’ve never killed a powerful demon before, and then one day a terrifying figure appears in the basement who is rumored to have killed a Pit Lord.
Will he have the confidence to be better at Shadow Magic than his opponent?
Definitely not.
Maybe it was Jalane’s confidence, or even her arrogance and disdain for those stronger than her, that strengthened the defensive spell, bringing out its true power.
Perhaps his emotions weren’t quite right, but he didn’t believe that one’s personality alone determined their ability to cast a spell. Otherwise, would Gul’dan cast a stronger spell than Kil’jaeden when suddenly a spell required a sense of inferiority?
Arrogance… disdain.
Who did Jesse look down upon?
At that moment, he suddenly remembered.
The moment when he tore open Azgath’s chest with The Hand of Gul’dan.
He had a thought pop into his mind for sure.
Pit Lord… just like that.
Although the thought was fleeting, it was extinguished by Azgath’s wild laughter.
But he did experience that feeling of total release.
Zardeth was still enjoying the attempt, as they hadn’t tried many times before and there was still a long afternoon ahead. After feeling a bit tired from trying, Jesse stood up and said, "I want to try again."
Zardeth nodded, and Jesse slowly closed his eyes in front of everyone, savoring the moment.
"Sister Soga, Viholysia, Vasdaon…"
Jesse proficiently recited the spell, and this time, even the feeling of casting the shield felt different from before.
This time it was much more stable, there was no need for continuous mana guidance… it just floated up to protect the surroundings.
Yes… When Teron Gorefiend released the Shadow Shield, the feeling of the Shadow Power shooting out was like this. He still remembered when Teron Gorefiend released the Shadow Shield, he even thought of using Shadow Bolt to attack a distant ranger… This magic was supposed to be like this.
The shield lasted for about two minutes before slowly fading away, even Jalane was surprised with her mouth slightly open.
"I still have a long way to go, Jesse," she whispered.
"I have been practicing this spell for a very long time before you, Jalane," Jesse said. "Without you sharing your tips, I might not have found this feeling at all."
Zardeth smiled and said, "That’s why we need a group to progress together, learn from each other’s experiences, and fill in the gaps."
Jalane also nodded.
"Why can’t I do it?" Ursula grumbled unhappily.
"But you easily mastered the Shadow Bolt, Ursula," Jesse comforted her. "Each type of Shadow Magic is different, you can practice slowly in the future."
After practicing for a while, it was almost dinner time. While waiting for Jarel to make bread, Jesse found Zardeth and asked, "When will Erlan and Surena be back, or when will they be ready for the next mission?"
Zardeth thought for a moment and said, "If they are coming back, it might take one to two weeks. You know it takes at least a week to get from here to The Black Morass, Jesse. You have to go through the whole Stillwater Vale to reach the Gnoll’s primeval forest. When you come back here, organize the things you find and sell them, take a rest, and then leave. It should be around a month later, in November. I will contact him by then to notify you."
"I plan to go to Booty Bay," Jesse said. "The round trip should take about three weeks. If they come back, remember to ask them to wait for me a little."
"Three weeks is fine," Zardeth said. "Is it for the robe?"
"Yes," Jesse said. "I’m planning to ask the goblins."
"You’re working hard, Jesse," Zardeth said.
Jesse smiled and said, "You can’t say that. I’m also helping myself by gathering materials to make the robe."
"With the experience of the first one, the rest will be much easier," Zardeth said.
