Zhiqian, the Fourth Elder, was beheaded before a crowd of onlookers, yet not a single member of the Qin family dared to step forward.
The person Chen Fei had been hoping to see still did not appear.
“As expected, she is truly cold-hearted!”
Chen Fei sighed, letting go of any lingering expectations. Feeling somewhat disappointed, he turned and left.
Upon returning to the Su family estate, this time, he did not climb over the wall but walked through the main gate with dignity.
The Su family guards still looked down on him, believing he was unworthy of Su Ran, but none dared to openly belittle him anymore.
Miao Yue had been waiting for him early on. Seeing Chen Fei return safely, she finally let out a sigh of relief.
“Why did you go out alone?” Miao Yue complained. “You are, after all, the Su family’s esteemed son-in-law. How can you not have anyone to accompany you?”
“It’s fine. I’ve long been used to it,” Chen Fei murmured. “Besides, I don’t trust others easily.”
“How about I find a few trustworthy people for you?” Miao Yue understood that Chen Fei had been betrayed by the woman he once loved, making it natural for him to be wary of others.
“No need. In a few days, Li Zhong will be arriving.”
Chen Fei did not want anyone constantly shadowing him, as it would make it difficult to maintain his hidden identity.
Back in his wedding chamber, Chen Fei held a small hope in his heart—he was waiting for Su Ran to return.
However, after waiting for a long time, Su Ran did not appear. Instead, Miao Yue arrived.
She informed him that Su Ran would not be coming back that night and was resting at the mining site.
“Not returning home at night? That’s not good,” Chen Fei muttered.
The Next Day
Early the next morning, Chen Fei set out and only arrived at Huangyue Pavilion at the agreed time.
Inside a private room at Huangyue Pavilion, he finally saw Su Ran, who had not returned home the previous night.
“Big Brother!”
Upon seeing the masked Chen Fei, Su Ran immediately stood up, stepped forward, and called him “Big Brother Chen Yang.”
Hearing this address, Chen Fei was momentarily taken aback. Normally, Su Ran called him by name, but now, hearing “Big Brother” nearly made him forget how to respond.
“Sister-in-law, there’s no need to be so formal. Have a seat,” Chen Fei replied, taking the initiative to sit down.
Su Ran looked at his back, feeling a sense of amazement. The resemblance between these two brothers was uncanny.
What surprised her even more was that “Chen Yang” wore an iron mask even while dining, never revealing his true face.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the dishes were served. Su Ran poured Chen Fei a cup of wine and got straight to the point.
“Big Brother, the reason I asked Chen Fei to arrange this meeting is because I have a request.”
Chen Fei nodded. “He already mentioned it in his letter.”
Hearing this, Su Ran continued, “Big Brother, my family’s patriarch is old, and he recently suffered an attack. Though he managed to kill his assailants, his energy has been severely depleted…”
At this moment, Su Ran chose to fully trust “Chen Yang” because she had no other choice. Normally, such vital matters of the family should never be disclosed to outsiders.
After listening to Su Ran, Chen Fei was shocked. He finally understood—Su Family’s patriarch was actually a Half-Step True Spirit Master!
What was a Half-Step True Spirit Master?
It meant that one’s spiritual power had already reached the level of a Spirit Master, but due to old age, they were unable to open their Spiritual Sea. Even if they had opened it, they lacked enough Starlight to illuminate it.
Such grand masters were called Half-Step True Spirit Masters. They possessed power beyond ordinary Grand Spirit Masters but were still unable to rival a true Spirit Master.
Chen Fei had learned about this from Sun Qianyi, a True Spirit Master he had once conversed with. He hadn’t known that there was a realm between Grand Spirit Masters and True Spirit Masters until then.
Why were Spell Spirit Masters considered the most noble among all Spirit Masters?
It was because they opened their Spiritual Sea early and received the illumination of Starlight. As long as they persisted in their cultivation, they could reach the Spirit Master realm more easily than others.
With the Su patriarch’s energy depleted, his combat ability was greatly reduced. Worse still, if he overexerted himself, his lifespan would be drastically shortened.
For a long time, the Su patriarch had remained out of the public eye. As long as he was alive, he deterred many forces in Huangwu City.
“How did this happen?” Chen Fei asked with a hint of confusion.
“If I’m not mistaken, someone must see our patriarch as an obstacle,” Su Ran replied.
Her words made the situation clear. The person behind the attack was certainly an insider—an outsider wouldn’t even know where the Su patriarch resided, let alone plan an assassination.
For the Su family, their patriarch should have been their most valuable asset. Yet, someone within the family wanted to destroy him. There was no need to guess too hard about the culprit.
“How do you want me to help?” Chen Fei asked, knowing that the one targeting the patriarch was none other than Su Xiangwu, his own son.
“I hope you can find a rare medicine for our patriarch.”
“Or, better yet, a top-grade Third-Tier Flood Dragon Blood Pill.”
Su Ran tentatively proposed.
Chen Fei felt his head ache upon hearing this.
A top-grade Third-Tier Flood Dragon Blood Pill was probably the highest quality pill he could even hope to encounter at the moment.
Such a pill might be found in the capital, but obtaining it?
That was beyond the reach of mere spirit stones—it would require equally rare treasures in exchange.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that right now,” Chen Fei immediately shook his head.
Su Ran looked slightly disappointed but understood that such an item was incredibly difficult to acquire.
“Is there anything else I can do for you?” Chen Fei asked.
“Xuanting Grass!”
“I heard rumors that Xuanting Grass has been spotted in Luoxuan Valley.”
“Big Brother, could you go to Luoxuan Valley to search for it?”
Su Ran made a compromise. If they could obtain Xuanting Grass, the Su patriarch might be able to recover his Half-Step True Spirit Master state, maintaining his power to deter Su Xiangwu and others.
Hearing the name Luoxuan Valley, Chen Fei’s heart trembled.
Luoxuan Valley was a dangerous land, teeming with spirit beasts, not far from Huangwu City.
The city lord’s beast-raising grounds mostly contained spirit beasts captured from there.
In this beast-infested valley, only True Spirit Masters at the Spirit Master level could roam freely.
Chen Fei was about to refuse, but when he saw Su Ran’s pleading and hopeful expression, he found himself unable to reject her.
“Trouble caused by beauty!”
He sighed. Though Luoxuan Valley was extremely dangerous, the Su family’s crisis was imminent. If they couldn’t resolve it, not only would Su Ran be in danger, but he, as the son-in-law, would also be implicated.
“Sister-in-law, I can go to Luoxuan Valley to search for Xuanting Grass, but I can’t guarantee that I’ll find it,” Chen Fei agreed.
Hearing this, Su Ran let out a sigh of relief. She knew how dangerous this was, but she had no other options.
“Big Brother, thank you! If Xuanting Grass can’t be found, then we will have to leave it to fate,” Su Ran said gratefully.
“Don’t be too pessimistic. No matter what, we’ll deal with things as they come,” Chen Fei reassured her.
“But…”
Su Ran looked at him in confusion. “Big Brother, is there something else?”
