“A soft knife?” Su Teng and Su Wan were both slightly taken aback.
“Prepare immediately. If we can win this boy over, our future may not be any worse than the City Lord’s Mansion!” Su Xianwu declared.
“Father, isn’t that an exaggeration?” Su Wan was unconvinced. A blind good-for-nothing—no matter how talented in dance—how high could his future achievements possibly be?
“Teng’er, what do you think?” Su Xianwu looked at Su Teng.
“Father, do you truly believe that waste Chen Fei has the potential to become a grandmaster of dance?” Su Teng was incredulous.
“Becoming a grandmaster of dance is no easy feat,” Su Xianwu said, somewhat disappointed. “But have you considered why the Young City Lord suddenly changed his stance and terminated our collaboration?”
“The future Patrolling Envoy, his elder brother, Chen Yang.” Su Teng and Su Wan nearly said in unison.
“Exactly!” Su Xianwu nodded. “A family capable of nurturing a future Patrolling Envoy cannot be simple.”
“Once we return, I will contact some friends to investigate Chen Fei’s family background,” Su Xianwu decided.
Meanwhile, just a few meters away in another carriage, Chen Fei was still reveling in the praise from his father-in-law, Su Xianwen.
Not only had Chen Fei brought honor to the Su family this time, but he had also safeguarded their most critical asset—the Yellow Spirit Mine!
Most importantly, if Chen Fei truly became a rising star in the Dance Bureau, he could finally rid himself of the humiliating label of “waste.” For Su Xianwen, this was the greatest relief. No longer would people gossip behind his back about his blind and useless son-in-law.
Upon returning to the Su residence, Su Xianwen uncharacteristically invited Chen Fei to his courtyard for a drink. During their conversation, he once again brought up the topic of meeting Chen Fei’s supposed elder brother, Chen Yang.
Chen Fei repeated what he had always said—he had no elder brother, so there was no one to introduce.
Hearing this again, Su Xianwen became so furious that his planned drinking session was abandoned entirely.
Watching his father-in-law’s angry expression, Chen Fei couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly. It wasn’t that he was unwilling to bridge the gap between them, but he had already made a promise to Su Ran.
He had just reassured his wife that he had endured much for her sake in arranging a meeting with his “brother.” If he turned around and made the same promise to his father-in-law, wouldn’t he be slapping himself in the face?
Between his wife and his father-in-law, he could only choose his wife.
Su Ran remained silent throughout the journey back. Even upon returning to their marital chamber, she was still deep in thought, troubled.
Although she had indeed basked in glory today at the City Lord’s Mansion—especially with Chen Fei’s outstanding performance—something had unsettled her.
It wasn’t until Ye Chunyan had suddenly gone mad and started confessing her love to Ye Bufan that Su Ran finally understood what had happened. That was supposed to be Ye Bufan’s scheme against her—but for some unknown reason, it had backfired onto Ye Chunyan instead.
Chen Fei noticed Su Ran’s troubled expression but chose to remain silent, continuing to play the role of a blind, useless man.
“Chen Fei, something is off about today. Ye Chunyan took the fall in my place,” Su Ran eventually spoke up.
“Oh? Why do you say that?” Chen Fei feigned ignorance.
“Do you remember what Ye Bufan said to us right before the ball restarted—right before Ye Chunyan went mad?” Su Ran asked.
“You mean… he was planning for you to act like Ye Chunyan and publicly confess your love to him?” Chen Fei pretended to have a sudden realization.
“Exactly!” Su Ran nodded, staring at Chen Fei closely. Clearly, someone had noticed the scheme, intervened, and turned it against Ye Bufan, leading to his downfall.
Su Ran had been contemplating this the entire way home. Who could have helped her?
The first person she thought of was, of course, the man before her—her husband.
But then she dismissed the idea. Even if Chen Fei had unexpectedly become a Spirit Technique Master with extraordinary talent, the training for Spirit Technique Masters was far more difficult than for regular Spirit Masters. Without the necessary cultivation resources, progress would be painfully slow.
A few minor Spirit Techniques might work against weak Spirit Masters under the right circumstances, but against a powerful Great Spirit Master in the Spirit Congealing Realm, Chen Fei was no different from an ordinary person.
So after much thought, Su Ran believed there was only one possible answer.
Chen Fei’s “elder brother,” Chen Yang, must have been secretly watching over them because she was his sister-in-law. That was the only explanation for how he was able to intervene so precisely.
The more Su Ran thought about it, the more convinced she became. She even believed that the high-ranking Crescent Blade token from Silvermoon Academy, which Chen Fei had received, was given to him because Chen Yang had foreseen the Su family’s treachery.
“Serves them right!”
“This is what they call divine retribution!”
Chen Fei put on a late realization act, pretending to be furious at Ye Bufan.
Su Ran didn’t notice anything amiss and nodded. “If my guess is correct, this was all thanks to your elder brother’s help.”
“Besides him, I can’t think of anyone else in Yellow Mist City with the ability to pull this off—and who would also be willing to help me without expecting anything in return.” She was absolutely certain.
Chen Fei felt a mix of amusement and helplessness at this conclusion but simply nodded along. “Perhaps that’s the case.”
“Chen Fei, you should arrange a meeting with your elder brother as soon as possible. This debt of gratitude is too great—I must repay it,” Su Ran said firmly.
“No rush,” Chen Fei responded, looking slightly troubled.
“How can it not be urgent?” Su Ran frowned. “My second uncle and the family elders have already joined forces. Since today’s agreement with the City Lord’s Mansion fell through, they will undoubtedly seek another ally. Their goal is to block my path to a swift rise.”
“I need to thank your brother properly—and ask for his help in breaking their scheme.”
Seeing Su Ran’s determination, Chen Fei sighed and said, “Since my wife insists, I will write a letter right away. You only need to hand it over to Li Zhong when the time comes.”
“Thank you!” Su Ran said gratefully. “Don’t worry, once I have enough strength, I will find a way to cure your eyes.”
“Can we not wait until later?” Seeing that the mood was just right, Chen Fei decided to push his luck a little.
“What do you mean?” Su Ran asked, puzzled.
“For example, how about giving me a hug? Or maybe cooking me a delicious dinner?” Chen Fei grinned, bracing himself for a scolding.
He had been in relationships in his past life and had even dated Qin Shuang. He knew that deepening a relationship required frequent physical contact. The more intimate moments they shared, the closer they would become until things naturally progressed.
“Let’s talk about it after you get things done,” Su Ran replied, her cheeks slightly flushed. Though she didn’t accept his suggestion, she didn’t outright reject it either.
Chen Fei felt a warmth in his heart. He quickly asked Su Ran to bring paper, ink, and a brush, then began writing to his “brother.”
As he handed the letter to her, he grinned and said, “Wife, my brother owes me a favor. Feel free to use him however you like—no need to be polite.”
