With this opportunity before him, Chen Fei did not hesitate. He saw it as a chance to deepen his relationship with Su Ran.
“My dear wife…” Chen Fei put on a troubled expression, hesitating as if he were struggling with something.
Su Ran, noticing his distress, quickly took his hand and gently said, “Chen Fei, I’m sorry. I was too hasty. If this is difficult for you, then forget what I said. I’ll find another way.”
“Wife, this matter does put me in a difficult position,” Chen Fei adjusted his tone, trying to appear sincere.
“It’s okay, I’ll think of something else,” Su Ran reassured him softly.
“As your husband, it’s my duty to help you in times of trouble. For you, I’ll do this, even if it costs me dearly. I’ll set up the meeting for you.” Chen Fei spoke as if he had made a tough decision.
“Chen Fei, thank you!” Su Ran was overjoyed.
“Wait a moment… What did you just call me?” It took Su Ran a moment to realize what he had said.
“Wife, of course,” Chen Fei replied naturally.
“I…” Su Ran instinctively wanted to correct him, reminding him that their relationship was only in name. But when she thought about how he had just made a difficult sacrifice for her, she felt reluctant to argue.
Forget it. It’s just a form of address. Besides, we did go through the wedding ceremony.
Su Ran convinced herself and silently accepted Chen Fei calling her “wife.”
Soon, the banquet began.
Originally, Su Ran and Chen Fei had been assigned seats near the young city lord, Ye Bufan. However, due to the earlier incident, Ye Bufan made a last-minute change, isolating them from the rest of the guests and seating them at a separate table.
Su Ran didn’t care about the exclusion, and Chen Fei found it preferable—no one would bother them.
Worried that Chen Fei might struggle to eat properly in front of others, Su Ran sat beside him and personally fed him his food.
Many onlookers were filled with jealousy and resentment, but no one dared to speak out. Su Ran’s strong personality and Chen Fei’s powerful brother, who was soon to become a patrol commander, made them keep their thoughts to themselves.
Only Ye Bufan radiated cold hostility, silently making it clear that his anger had not faded.
Though Chen Fei enjoyed Su Ran’s gentle care, he never forgot the deadly scheme he had uncovered from the dead assassin—Ye Bufan’s plan involving the Tongxin Gu poison.
After the banquet came the dance.
Chen Fei knew this was the best opportunity to preemptively dismantle Ye Bufan’s plot. If he waited any longer, it might be too late.
“Wife, I need to use the restroom. I’ll be right back,” Chen Fei said.
“I’ll go with you,” Su Ran offered, concerned about his limited vision.
It would be awkward for Su Ran to accompany him, but given that he was blind, she felt responsible.
“No need, there are plenty of servants in the city lord’s mansion,” Chen Fei reassured her before standing up, picking up his cane, and allowing a servant to guide him out of the hall.
Ye Bufan saw this and recognized a perfect opportunity. He signaled the guiding servant with a subtle glance.
The servant immediately understood and nodded before leading Chen Fei away.
Instead of taking him to the restroom, the servant led him through several twists and turns toward the city lord’s beast garden.
A blind man accidentally wandering into a beast enclosure and getting mauled to death—this would be the perfect excuse. As long as the city lord’s mansion ensured Chen Fei didn’t die outright, even his powerful brother couldn’t hold a grudge. In fact, he might even be grateful for their “timely rescue.”
The moment Chen Fei neared the beast garden, he realized Ye Bufan was using a despicable trick to take revenge.
Sure enough, the servant stopped and said, “Young master, please wait here. I’ll be right back.” Then, he moved to a hiding spot, expecting Chen Fei to grow impatient, fumble forward, and unknowingly step into the beast enclosure.
Chen Fei decided to play along—but only to a certain extent.
Feigning hesitation, he cautiously stepped forward. But the moment he moved out of the servant’s line of sight, he picked up speed and disappeared.
This servant had deliberately taken a winding route, which had inadvertently helped Chen Fei locate the city lord’s warehouse.
Right now, entering the warehouse and stopping Ye Bufan’s poison scheme for Su Ran was the most urgent priority.
As for Ye Bufan’s pathetic attempt at revenge, it would serve as a perfect alibi for him later—ensuring no one suspected his real activities.
“A blind man dares to offend my young master? He’s courting death.”
The servant sneered as he prepared to follow and ensure Chen Fei didn’t actually get killed by the beasts.
But before he could act, an invisible force struck him. The servant collapsed, unconscious.
As a ninth-rank Grand Spirit Master, Chen Fei had no difficulty dealing with a mere fourth-rank Spirit Master. The servant would wake up in less than ten minutes, but by then, he wouldn’t even be sure what had happened.
Even if he suspected he had been attacked, he wouldn’t dare speak up for fear of being held responsible.
Besides, as a Spirit Master, Chen Fei could manipulate consciousness. He could easily plant the illusion that everything had been a hallucination.
With the servant handled, Chen Fei silently made his way to the warehouse. Using his Spirit Snake’s sensory ability, he quickly located the storage room containing dance costumes.
“Hm?”
“Ye Chunyan?”
Ye Bufan was truly cautious—he had stationed Ye Chunyan to guard this warehouse. No wonder she hadn’t been present at the banquet.
Ye Chunyan was a first-rank Grand Spirit Master. Unlike the weak guards he had dealt with earlier, controlling her mind would not be easy.
After all, Chen Fei had only recently started training in spirit techniques. Against a Gathering Realm Spirit Master, his abilities were effective, but against a Grand Spirit Master, simple mind-control tactics would not be enough.
“This is tricky. I need to lure her away.” Chen Fei frowned slightly.
His gaze shifted toward another warehouse nearby, where the spiritual energy was noticeably more concentrated than in the surroundings.
“That must be where they store spirit stones, pills, and rare treasures.”
An idea formed in Chen Fei’s mind.
Rather than targeting the dance costume warehouse, he moved toward the treasure storage instead.
Four guards patrolled this area—two standing at the entrance and two rotating around the perimeter.
All of them were merely seventh-rank Spirit Masters. Controlling one to create a diversion and draw Ye Chunyan away would be a simple task.
Just as Chen Fei was about to act, he suddenly felt an unusual vibration from the Void Heaven Cauldron in his dantian.
“Huh?”
“What’s happening?”
For the first time since its manifestation, the Void Heaven Cauldron had reacted on its own.
After a few experiments, Chen Fei quickly realized the cause.
Whenever he got close to the treasure warehouse, the cauldron trembled. But when he moved away, it returned to normal.
“There’s something inside that’s making the Void Heaven Cauldron react?”
Chen Fei’s mind filled with questions.
“There’s still time. I need to go inside and see for myself.”
Without hesitation, he decided to infiltrate the warehouse and uncover what was causing this unusual reaction.
