After leaving the inn, Chen Fei made his way to the blacksmith shop. When he had initially commissioned the blacksmith to forge a mask, he had also requested a pair of glasses.
Glasses were a completely foreign concept in this world, which meant the blacksmith needed time to source suitable materials. Particularly, translucent obsidian—ideal for the lenses—was a rare find.
Now that several days had passed, Chen Fei figured his order should be ready.
As he walked toward the blacksmith shop, still maintaining the guise of a blind man, he suddenly sensed a sneaky figure tailing him.
“Hmm?”
Chen Fei was slightly surprised. Ever since he appeared in Yellow Mist City under the identity of Chen Yang and single-handedly crushed the Qin family, no one should have dared to target him—at least, not openly.
After all, everyone feared the wrath of an elder brother.
To confirm his suspicions, Chen Fei deliberately entered an empty alleyway, curious to see if the stalker would make a move.
Sure enough, as soon as he stepped into the alley, the man behind him hastened his pace. The moment he closed the distance, he pulled out a dagger.
Chen Fei frowned. Without hesitation, he swiftly disarmed the attacker and pinned him to the ground.
“Aren’t you supposed to be crippled, your dantian destroyed…?” The man stared in shock at Chen Fei’s hollow yet intimidating eye sockets.
“Who sent you?” Chen Fei asked coldly.
“Su Ran is an exceptional genius! How could she possibly be forced to marry a blind cripple like you? If you have any honor, just kill me!” The assassin declared, his voice filled with unwavering resolve.
Chen Fei’s frown deepened. This man was clearly a death soldier—willing to die rather than betray his master. In Yellow Mist City, only a few major factions had the resources to deploy such loyal killers.
“You think staying silent will protect your master?” Chen Fei sneered.
He activated his mind, channeling his faint spiritual power into the Void Heaven Cauldron within his sea of consciousness.
“Soul Control!”
With a soft incantation, an invisible force surged from the Void Heaven Cauldron and crashed into the assassin’s mind.
Before the assassin could react, his entire being fell into a trance, his expression dull and vacant, as though his soul had been ripped away.
“Who sent you?” Chen Fei asked again.
“Young City Lord, Ye Bufan,” the assassin answered in a monotone voice.
“Why would he bother targeting a so-called ‘cripple’ like me? Doesn’t he fear my brother, Chen Yang?”
“I am a death soldier. Whether I succeed or fail, I will not implicate Young City Lord Ye…” The assassin continued answering without hesitation.
Under the effect of Soul Control, death soldiers would reveal everything they knew without resistance.
Chen Fei quickly pieced together Ye Bufan’s entire scheme.
“Heart-Taming Gu Poison?”
When he heard the name from the assassin’s mouth, his expression changed dramatically.
“Yes. Young City Lord obtained this precious Gu poison through great effort. He plans to use it at the Capital Founding Ceremony in three days, forcing Su Ran to kneel before him and beg to be his woman. From then on, she will be his personal slave.” The assassin spoke without emotion.
“Ye Bufan…”
“What a vicious scheme!”
A chill ran down Chen Fei’s spine. If he hadn’t discovered this plan in advance, and if he and Su Ran had attended the City Lord’s banquet unprepared, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
After confirming there were no other secrets left to extract, Chen Fei executed the death soldier and destroyed the body.
As long as Ye Bufan didn’t realize his assassin had failed, he wouldn’t be on high alert. After all, who would suspect that a “blind cripple” could not only kill an elite assassin but also extract confidential intelligence through Soul Control?
With the matter settled, Chen Fei continued toward the blacksmith shop and successfully retrieved the sunglasses he had designed.
Putting them on, he found them far more stylish than the blindfold Miao Yue had purchased for him.
When he later reunited with Miao Yue, she gasped in amazement at his new look.
“Gongye, what is this? You look like a completely different person! So cool!”
“Pretty stylish, huh?” Chen Fei chuckled. “This thing cost me over a thousand spirit stones.”
“That expensive?” Miao Yue was surprised. A thousand spirit stones could sustain an ordinary family for years.
“But totally worth it!” she quickly added.
When they arrived at the Su family residence, an unexpected sight greeted them—Qin Shuang’s mother and younger brother, Qin Cheng, were waiting anxiously at the entrance.
“Brother-in-law…”
“Please! Save us!”
As soon as Chen Fei stepped down from the carriage, Qin Cheng abandoned all dignity and threw himself at Chen Fei’s feet, clutching his legs in desperation.
Chen Fei hadn’t expected the Qin family to still have the audacity to seek his help.
Miao Yue immediately pulled Qin Cheng away, her face dark with irritation. “Chen Fei is the son-in-law of the Su family. This is the Su residence!”
“What are you all standing there for? Get rid of them!” Miao Yue barked at the Su family guards.
However, the guards merely sneered.
“Chen Fei and Miss Su’s marriage has never been officially acknowledged by the Su family,” one of them remarked indifferently, making no move to intervene.
“Chen Fei, I know you and Shuang’er had your differences, but your child is innocent.”
“Would you really let the Qin family be destroyed and force your own child to bear the grudge of their mother’s annihilated clan?” Qin Shuang’s mother pleaded tearfully.
The Qin family couldn’t find Qin Shuang, and with their patriarch and elders imprisoned by Chen Yang, their only option was to beg Chen Fei.
“Shameless!” Miao Yue spat. “You dare bring this up now? Have you no shame?”
Ignoring her, Qin Cheng and his mother continued to block Chen Fei’s path, refusing to leave.
Chen Fei sighed and slowly removed his sunglasses, revealing his hollow, terrifying eyes.
“Qin Cheng, who gouged out my eyes?”
“Who destroyed my dantian?”
“You want to save your family elders? And the Qin family patriarch?”
“Then tell me—how do I get my revenge?”
Qin Cheng stammered, “It—it was the Fourth Elder! Kill him, and all will be settled!”
“Brother-in-law, even if you and my sister are no longer together, you still share a child. Does it have to end in bloodshed?”
“This has nothing to do with me,” Chen Fei said indifferently. “I didn’t imprison your clan members. If you want to plead, plead with your sister. Only she can save your family now.”
“But my sister won’t return in time! Chen Yang listens to you! You can intervene!” Qin Shuang’s mother wept as she knelt before Chen Fei.
Yet, Chen Fei’s heart was as cold as ice. He felt nothing for the Qin family. If not for the unborn child, the Qin clan would have already been wiped out.
Miao Yue finally summoned guards to drive the Qin family away.
“Should’ve thought about this before,” she scoffed. “Come back again, and it won’t be exile—it’ll be execution.”
As the Qin family wailed in despair, their plight became nothing more than a pitiful joke.
What stood out most to Chen Fei, however, was how little authority Su Ran seemed to have within her own family. Even the Su household guards dared to disregard her name.
