Chapter 44: Tomb of the Great Sage
"Honey, that’s Godfall Ridge ahead."
Fu Tianxing and the white-haired old lady raced across the landscape, arriving before a stretch of rugged mountains after half a day.
Godfall Ridge’s sky remained perpetually gray, as if veiled in thin ash-colored mist year-round, exuding both oppression and mystery.
This climate had persisted unchanged since the ridge’s formation.
After a moment’s thought, Fu Tianxing murmured, "Godfall Ridge has been here for over ten million years, hasn’t it?"
"Twelve million years," the white-haired old woman corrected.
Remembering the terrifying legends, Fu Tianxing felt his hair stand on end. Existing for twelve million years while retaining its status as the Yuan Realm’s most fearsome forbidden land—truly, Godfall Ridge’s eeriness spoke for itself.
"Let’s enter," he said, taking a deep breath. "We trust Senior Ye Xu’s guidance."
The two stepped into Godfall Ridge.
Whoosh!
Instantly, the world transformed. Gone was the clear sky of Southern Wilderness; overhead, roiling storm clouds thundered like pounding war drums.
Turning back, they saw only an expanse of dark, bare mountains sprawling endlessly under the gloomy heavens—utterly barren and lifeless.
Nearby lay an enormous skeleton, mountain-sized, clearly the remains of some unknown, ancient beast. Even in death, its fierce aura permeated the air.
"This place is truly sinister," Fu Tianxing remarked.
Now, they found no path behind them—only forward remained.
Alert and tense, the pair pressed onward according to the route Ye Xu had provided them.
Roar!
A bloodcurdling beast’s roar echoed far into the void, signaling a battle between ancient ferocious beasts. The air thickened with the pungent scent of blood and decay.
Ooo…
Before long, Fu Tianxing and the old woman saw a stream of black mist drifting toward them.
The mist blotted half the sky, endlessly churning. Strange sounds emanated from within, suggesting some creature resided inside.
Immediately, Fu Tianxing and the old woman suppressed their auras.
They didn’t know what this was, but Ye Xu had warned them against touching anything unusual in Godfall Ridge.
This black mist clearly qualified as unusual.
Roar!
Half a tea-time later, they spotted a creature hundreds of feet long. It had an ox head, tiger body, and deer tail, all clad in green dragon scales. Its aura radiated overwhelming power.
The beast was feeding, seemingly oblivious to the approaching mist.
Fu Tianxing tensed inwardly. This monster possessed immense strength—it was no lesser than a semi-saint.
Yet.
As the black mist surged nearer, the ox-headed beast finally sensed danger. It glanced sideways and let out a deafening, unnatural roar.
It instinctively fled, but the moment it took a step, black mist engulfed its body.
A few breaths later, the black mist drifted into the distance.
All that remained on the ground was a skeleton.
Faintly, Fu Tianxing seemed to hear the sound of chewing coming from within the black mist.
"This ghastly place isn’t fit for humans," Fu Tianxing trembled all over, his lips beginning to quiver.
The white-haired old woman spoke with reverence, "The master of Heaven’s Secret Pavilion is truly a master. From tens of thousands of miles away, he knew the oddities of Godfall Ridge."
Fu Tianxing strongly agreed. Without Ye Xu’s guidance, they too might have been devoured by the black mist.
Based on their observations, the black mist possessed consciousness.
Or rather, creatures existed within the mist, capable of detecting life signatures. They manipulated the mist’s movement, devouring all flesh, blood, and primordial spirits of living beings encountered.
That Holy-tier monster hadn’t offered the slightest resistance from start to finish.
This indicated the beings within the black mist were exceptionally powerful.
"Old dear, do you think the massive skeletons we saw along the way… could they all be the work of this Creature?" Fu Tianxing recalled the colossal bones encountered earlier.
"Most likely It," the white-haired old woman replied.
"We must hurry into the Tomb of Panwu the Great Sage," Fu Tianxing urged urgently.
The Tomb of the Great Sage, layered with numerous arrays, might prove safer than the outside.
Immediately, they held their breath and proceeded towards the great sage’s tomb.
"Godfall Ridge is barely a hundred thousand miles across. How come, after a day of walking, we still haven’t reached it?" the white-haired old woman questioned in confusion.
With their speed, a hundred thousand miles could be covered in half a day.
"Could we be trapped in an array?"
Fu Tianxing shook his head. "I’ve followed the route provided by Senior exactly, without any deviation. Godfall Ridge likely exists as a separate realm itself."
Two days later.
Carefully avoiding the strange mists all the way, treading as if on thin ice, they finally arrived at a massive ridge.
Here, two peaks intersected, forming jagged teeth-like protrusions.
The Tomb of the Great Sage lay at the entrance to these jagged peaks.
However, that area appeared utterly empty, devoid of any special features.
"This is where the Tomb of the Great Sage is located?" The white-haired old woman frowned. "Why can’t I sense even a trace of magical energy?"
Fu Tianxing approached the entrance.
Boom!
He channeled his magical power, his magical powers erupting as he punched towards the jagged rock formation.
Boom!
A colossal ghostly fist manifested in mid-air, yet it couldn’t even stir the space of Godfall Ridge. The immense force struck the jagged teeth, causing the entire mountain to shudder slightly.
The white-haired old woman was even more astonished.
If it had been in the Yuan Realm, a single punch from Fu Tianxing could have shattered a ten-thousand-zhang tall mountain peak, but in Godfall Ridge, it hadn’t even been able to shatter the void—it had only managed to slightly shake a mountain.
Clang!
A clear, deep, and resonant bell sound rang out.
As Fu Tianxing threw that punch, a rust-covered great bronze bell unexpectedly emerged at the jagged spot, sending ripples through the void.
Fu Tianxing’s magical power was completely absorbed by the bell.
Hum!
With a slight vibration of the bell, the ripples dispersed, as if a void passage had been opened; beneath the bell, a spatial entrance suddenly appeared.
The two of them looked towards the entrance: it was a vast expanse of white, and they couldn’t see a single thing clearly.
"You didn’t deceive us, Senior," Fu Tianxing said, looking at the white-haired old woman. "If you had intended to deceive us, we wouldn’t have even made it this far."
"Moreover, what swindler have you ever seen who would lend out something they’d already acquired?"
The white-haired old woman’s face turned ashamed.
"Is this the tomb of the great sage?" the white-haired old woman stared at the bronze bell. "This bell is extraordinary; it ought to be the divine weapon of a Saint King."
"Not just that," Fu Tianxing said. "To stabilize a spatial entrance within Godfall Ridge—that likely requires divine weapons of the great sage to achieve."
"Don’t get foolish ideas; this is a divine weapon holding the entrance in place. We can’t move it."
"Even if we took it, the tomb of the great sage would collapse instantly into the spatial storm."
The white-haired old woman reluctantly pulled her gaze away.
Fu Tianxing’s words were indeed true.
The bronze bell secured the tomb of the great sage, keeping it immobile in the void, while simultaneously creating the spatial entrance for the destined individuals to enter and inherit Panwu the Great Sage’s legacy.
"Let’s go." Fu Tianxing’s gaze was resolute. "Since we’ve reached the tomb of the great sage, there’s no need to hang back any longer."
"Inside, there is an array that tests the Dao heart."
"The moment retreat is on your mind, infinite inner demons will arise, clouding your judgment; we’d certainly die within that array."
"Alright," the white-haired old woman gathered her wandering thoughts and exhaled a stream of Pure Energy.
Just as the two prepared to step into the tomb of the great sage, movement came from behind them.
The two braced themselves as if confronting a formidable foe.
Fu Tianxing immediately pulled out a golden bronze truncheon; saintly energy circulated, vastly amplifying his aura.
The white-haired old woman also gripped her divine brush, standing at full readiness.
They thought a creature from Godfall Ridge had sensed their aura and descended there.
But after a breath, they saw nine figures leaping towards them.
Old Ghost Fei from the Qi Xian Sect, the gray-robed semi-saint from the Heavenly Corpse Dao, and others had all rushed to the tomb of the great sage.
"Fu old man, hope all is well since we last met," Old Ghost Fei said with a cupped-hand salute and a chuckle.
"Old Ghost Fei, what are you all doing here too?" Fu Tianxing frowned deeply, immediately figuring it out. "Did the master of Heaven’s Secret Pavilion send you?"
