Chapter 5: Frightening Girlfriends
Countless stars swirled in an endless celestial dance before Yun Xi’s eyes. Their luminous trails wove intricate patterns across the vast tapestry of the heavens, their silent whispers resonating in the depths of his consciousness.
A dream… yes, this must be a dream.
Yun Xi clung to the thought like a drowning man grasping at straws. The idea that he, a humble village baker, could have had four lovers of such unfathomable power was beyond absurd—it was madness. A wild fantasy conjured in the farthest reaches of his imagination.
But no matter how deeply he buried himself in denial, some truths could not be outrun. What was meant to come would come, and fate was never one to show mercy.
Mei’er, her golden ears twitching with excitement, clearly had no understanding of Yun Xi’s mounting turmoil. Her voice, filled with innocent enthusiasm, chimed through the vast silence, eager to unravel even more of the truths he had no desire to confront.
“Master is not human. Master is a special child of the stars.”
Yun Xi’s breath hitched, his heart pounding against his ribs like a war drum.
“With every death, master will be reborn from the stars again, just like now.”
The words echoed in his mind, heavy and surreal, yet they carried a strange familiarity.
“Master has doubted his past, right?” Mei’er tilted her head, her golden eyes glistening with curiosity. “Actually, master has no parents.”
Yun Xi stood frozen, his thoughts grinding to a halt. If this was a dream, it was an unsettling one—too vivid, too precise, too coincidental.
How could this golden-eared star spirit know of the secrets he had buried deep within himself?
Wait… if what she said was true, then could those rumors he had always dismissed as mere gossip actually hold some truth?
“I… I don’t have parents?” Yun Xi’s voice cracked with disbelief.
His parents had always cherished him beyond measure, doting on him as if he were the greatest treasure in the world. How could he possibly not be their child?
“That’s right,” Mei’er confirmed with a nod. “Master has no parents because you were born from the sea of stars.”
“Every time you die, you are reborn somewhere within the star sea. And when you turn eighteen, you regain the memories of your past life. That’s how it’s always been,” she explained, as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
Yun Xi felt the weight of her words settle heavily on his shoulders. The world around him seemed to spin, and he struggled to ground himself.
“I… am not father and mother’s child…”
A sense of emptiness clawed at his chest, yet deep down, he had always known.
The pieces of the puzzle had always been there, lurking in the corners of his mind. Sixteen years ago, his mother had already been fifty—far beyond the years of childbearing. It had been an impossibility. And yet, he had chosen to ignore it, to push away the nagging doubts, because his parents had never spoken of it, never given him reason to question.
He had told himself it didn’t matter. He had pretended not to see the truth.
But now…
The undeniable reality pressed against him like a tide he could no longer hold back.
Starchild… that name refers to me…
Lifting his gaze, Yun Xi stared at the endless heavens above. The sun, the moon, the stars—they were all watching him, whispering secrets he could barely comprehend. He could feel their presence, their blessing, their silent acknowledgment of his existence.
The vast sea of stars had birthed him, cradled him, and now, it called him home.
“In that case, why am I here? And why are you here?” Yun Xi’s voice trembled as he finally found the strength to question the enigma unraveling before him.
Just moments ago, he had heard murmurs from the stars—fragments of warnings, whispers of impending danger.
If Mei’er was right, and he was meant to awaken at eighteen, why had it happened two years too soon?
Where was this looming danger coming from?
“After master died the last time, I was entrusted to the stars,” Mei’er explained softly. “Originally, master was supposed to awaken at eighteen, but because of the threat approaching, the stars accelerated the process.”
Yun Xi swallowed hard.
Threat. Danger. The words echoed ominously in his mind, cold and unrelenting.
“Of course,” Mei’er added with a proud little smile, puffing out her tiny chest, “another reason is that master chose Mei’er. Thank you, master! I will do my best to make you stronger!”
She looked so confident, her golden tail wagging in delight, her radiant expression saying, Leave everything to me!
But Yun Xi couldn’t share her enthusiasm.
Danger…
That word clung to his thoughts like a heavy fog. He had heard it whispered before, a creeping dread that refused to be ignored.
“Who… who is a mortal danger to me?” Yun Xi whispered, his throat dry. “I haven’t even died once…”
And yet, somehow, he already knew—deep in his bones—that the answer to this question would change everything.
Even the stars, ancient and eternal, had foreseen the peril that lay ahead. They had hastily sent forth the three spirits as a warning, their celestial voices trembling with urgency. What kind of catastrophe could force even the stars to act in such desperation… Ah!
“Master, your enemies are many, but the important thing is that you’ve only seen four so far. Has master ever heard their divine names?”
The mention of divine names sent a shiver down Yun Xi’s spine. A terrible premonition took root in his mind, a suspicion so outrageous that he almost laughed—almost.
“The first overlord is the sovereign of the star dragons, the ruler of the Dragon God’s Domain. Known as the Dragon of Order, she is the Mother of Space and Time, the Supreme Dragon Goddess. She embodies birth, life, and death.”
“The second overlord is nameless, a shadow lurking within the abyss of nightmares. She is the Goddess of Chaos, the source of all pain, dwelling in the deepest recesses of the Ghost World.”
“The third overlord is an ancient horror beyond description. The Great Old One of Chaos. The harbinger of an unspeakable terror. She is the avatar of primordial chaos, ruling over the fathomless depths of the Hell Sea.”
“The fourth overlord is the master of infinite domains, the supreme ruler of the market where gods and demons barter their fates. She is the Creator, the God above Gods.”
“Although many obstacles stood in their way, the four spared no effort in hunting you down.”
Yun Xi felt his knees grow weak.
Surely, it would be easier to just die this time, right?
The Supreme Dragon Goddess, the Goddess of Chaos, the Ancient God of Old, and the God above Gods.
His four ex-girlfriends. Each one wielding unimaginable power, capable of erasing stars from existence and bending time to their will.
Yun Xi swallowed hard. He had once heard of two of them.
The God above Gods was a name spoken in hushed reverence across the Western Gods’ Domains—an omnipotent ruler presiding over hundreds of billions of divine realms. She was the singular, absolute sovereign of the entire western cosmos.
As for the Supreme Dragon Goddess, she was the undisputed monarch of the Northern Dragon God’s Domain. The might of the dragons was legendary, their presence so vast that even the people in a far-off, humble place like the White Lotus Sword Domain had heard of them.
But the other two…
Yun Xi had no knowledge of them, yet the mere fact that they stood equal to the Supreme Dragon Goddess and the God above Gods was enough to send a cold shiver through his very soul.
And now Mei’er, that tiny golden-eared spirit in his arms, had just told him that all four of them had once come together to hunt him down. What kind of twisted joke was this?
“This… this has to be a joke, right?” Yun Xi asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The celestial light bathing him did little to ease the chill seeping into his bones. A single question loomed over him, suffocating him with its weight.
“What kind of crime did the son of the stars commit to provoke four overlords into hunting him?”
Despite being wrapped in the radiant embrace of the stars, his memories remained locked away, an empty canvas without a single stroke of recollection.
No matter how hard he tried to grasp at the shadows of his past, all he found was an unsettling blankness.
“This… Mei’er also doesn’t know.”
Her golden eyes, wide and filled with innocence, gazed at him helplessly. Yun Xi found no answers in their depths, only an unbearable truth that shattered his sanity.
“It seems that in the past, master refused to marry them and caused them to be angry.”
“In other words, they are master’s ex-girlfriends.”
“So, they are out to kill you. Every time they sense your presence, they will pursue you to the ends of the universe. No escape.”
“What!” Yun Xi’s horrified cry echoed through the void, making the stars tremble in response.
To refuse their marriage proposal…
That was it? That was the reason?
His heart pounded violently in his chest. He had expected something far more sinister—stealing an artifact of unimaginable power, disrupting the balance of the cosmos, accidentally stumbling upon some forbidden knowledge… but to reject their affections?
What kind of reckless, insane person had he been in his past life? To scorn not one, but four beings who held dominion over entire realms?
It was as the old saying went—you wouldn’t die if you didn’t court death.
Now he finally understood why the stars had acted with such urgency.
If any one of his terrifying ex-girlfriends caught even the faintest trace of him, there would be no salvation.
No wonder his awakening had been accelerated by two years. If he were found unprepared, there would be no escaping his fate—he would be obliterated without a second thought.
