Chapter 8: The Power of Bloodlines
With a snap.
Qingfeng was quick and placed a yellow talisman firmly on the piece of meat.
The struggling piece of meat immediately became quiet, showing no more signs of movement.
Wang Yu let out a sigh, released the little wooden sword from his hands, and stepped back.
"Indeed, it’s good that Junior Martial Brother helped; otherwise, it would have been difficult to seal this shadow spirit," the young Taoist said to Wang Yu with a slight smile as he threw the meat piece back into the jar and sealed the opening with thick cloth.
"Is this thing called a shadow spirit?" Wang Yu asked instinctively, still a bit frightened.
"Yes, the shadow spirit is a low-level evil spirit born from shadow energy. Although it doesn’t have much intelligence and acts on instinct, if it gets into an ordinary person’s body, it can cause a serious illness or even death. If caught, it needs to be sealed away to be slowly purified later," Qingfeng replied slowly while placing the jar among others.
"What is shadow energy? Are there many ghostly things like this? Why has Junior Martial Brother never heard of them before?" Wang Yu asked, his mind racing with questions.
This thing looks just like the ghostly creatures from Blue Star legends.
"I can explain what shadow energy is later when we have more time, but shadow spirits are indeed rare. They have become more common recently due to some special reasons; it’s normal that you didn’t know about them before."
"The other shadow spirits in the jar were captured by me and my master over the past two years. These things are just like Cloud Pattern; ordinary people cannot come into contact with them. Only those with Spiritual Sensing can see them. Otherwise, I would have asked Dongyue for help instead of you," Qingfeng chuckled.
Wang Yu began to realize and no longer found it strange that Dongyue did not have Spiritual Sensing. After all, Taoist Chongyun had said that Spiritual Sensing is a rare talent. But looking at the jars on the ground, he couldn’t help but ask:
"Elder Martial Brother, was the lightning in your hand earlier a spell? Can these talismans really seal this thing?"
"Junior Martial Brother, you also know about talismans, that’s rare. The ones on the jar are indeed talismans, but they are not like ordinary talismans. To be precise, these are spiritual symbols containing real power; ordinary talismans cannot suppress Shadow Spirits." The young Taoist showed a surprised expression, then raised one hand, opened his fingers, revealing a dark wooden token with several seemingly complex patterns engraved on it, and continued:
"I do know a bit of magic, but what I used earlier was not a spell; I just activated the lightning power of this token. This token is made from a hundred-year-old lightning strike wood. As long as it is activated with magic, it can show lightning, which is very effective against Shadow Spirits. The wooden sword in your hand is also made from leftover pieces of lightning-strike wood, but it does not have any engravings, so it cannot display lightning power. However, it can still ward off evil, so I’m giving it to you; I can’t let you help me for free."
"Thank you, Elder Martial Brother."
The other person really has magical power and knows spells!
Wang Yu was overjoyed and carefully placed the wooden sword into his embrace, while also pondering what the other person meant by "engraving."
The young Taoist, seeing Wang Yu so happy, showed a thoughtful expression and after considering, asked:
"Junior Martial Brother Qiu Ye, do you wish to learn my skill to suppress and seal Shadow Spirits?"
"What? Martial Brother is willing to teach me? Will the Temple Master agree?" Wang Yu was a bit surprised and then happily replied.
"Don’t worry, what I want to teach you is not the secret mystical technique of the White Cloud Temple, but just a couple of methods specifically to suppress shadow spirits. Now that there are more and more dark spirits down the mountain, I urgently need a helper with Spiritual Sensing. If you agree, I will persuade my master." Qingfeng said without hesitation.
"If the Temple Master has no objections, I am naturally willing to learn." Wang Yu nodded repeatedly, looking very eager.
"Good, wait for my news, junior brother. It is getting late now. I need to check the seals on the other Shadow Spirits. You can leave for now." The young Taoist said no more, tore down the yellow talismans on the door, and began to urge him to leave.
Wang Yu bowed to say goodbye and turned to leave. Just as he stepped outside the door, the dark stone door slowly closed, and he could no longer see anything inside.
Outside, Wang Yu looked at the stone door for a while with a glint in his eyes before leaving with a slight smile.
With a strange feeling, after all this commotion, the heat inside him seemed to have completely vanished, but his skin still felt a subtle itch.
That night, he had a very long dream. First, he dreamed that he returned to Blue Star with a great bounty, surrounded and admired by many friends and family. But then he inexplicably fell into a sea of fire, his skin melting away in the flames, yet he felt no burning pain; instead, there was a refreshing sensation that made him feel exceptionally comfortable, and he fell into a deep and pleasant sleep.
The next morning, in the guest room of the White Cloud Temple.
Wang Yu stood by the table, holding a half-broken clay cup in his hands, looking completely puzzled.
Just a moment ago, after he got up, he felt a bit thirsty and wanted to pick up the pottery cup on the table to drink some water. However, as soon as he grasped the cup, the top half suddenly shattered in his fingers, like it was made of sand.
Wang Yu took a long time to come back to his senses, and with the half piece of the cup in his hand, he applied a little more force.
"Bang!"
The remaining part of the cup also broke apart, and tiny fragments slipped through his fingers, scattering all over the floor.
"Impossible."
He murmured, raising his hands to look closely, and noticed that his palms seemed a bit thicker than before. His eyes widened slightly, and suddenly, he reached out with one hand towards the corner of the table and pulled hard.
"Snap!"
The seemingly sturdy corner of the wooden table was easily torn off, as if it were made of dough.
"Hiss."
Wang Yu took a sharp breath, finally realizing that his strength had grown immensely overnight. When he looked down, it seemed that his legs had also become a bit thicker, and the pants that used to fit him well felt slightly short.
He pushed down with his knees and surprisingly jumped about ten feet high, easily reaching up to grab the beam that looked very high. Then, he leaned down and did almost a hundred push-ups in one breath, still feeling no signs of tiredness.
This is the effect of medicinal meat!
Wang Yu was extremely shocked and could only think of this item.
Even though Dongyue and Qingfeng said that the effects of medicinal meat were excellent in the first few uses, he still couldn’t imagine such a huge change in his body overnight.
This miraculous effect, similar to a powerful life-changing technique, probably only appears in some biographical novels on Blue Star.
As a modern person who understands the physical structure of ordinary humans, he was worried about any hidden dangers from such a drastic overnight change in his body.
The excitement on Wang Yu’s face gradually faded, and he decided to find Dongyue for answers. He pushed open the door and walked outside.
In the center of the square, a young Taoist stood quietly, seemingly meditating. Upon hearing the noise, he opened his eyes and immediately noticed Wang Yu hurrying out.
"Good morning, Elder Martial Brother."
Wang Yu was a bit surprised and hurriedly gave a polite bow and called out.
"Qiu Ye, what happened to your face? Why have you suddenly grown so much taller?" Qingfeng looked up and down at Wang Yu, whom he had seen just last night, and asked with a strange expression.
"My face?" Wang Yu replied, feeling a bit confused.
"Take a look for yourself," the young Taoist said, his mouth twitching slightly, and he pulled out a bronze mirror from his pocket and handed it over.
Wang Yu, filled with questions, took the bronze mirror and looked into it. He saw a strange face reflecting back on the smooth surface: the lower half looked normal, while the upper half had bright red skin, like a freshly cooked shrimp, but he felt no difference at all.
As for his height?
He glanced at the young Taoist across from him and suddenly noticed that the other person seemed to have shrunk a lot in his sight.
Indeed, he had grown much taller overnight.
This is…
Wang Yu held the mirror, feeling confused for a moment.
"Did you experience anything strange or eat anything unusual after you came back yesterday?" the young warrior asked curiously.
"I went straight to bed after getting home last night, I didn’t even drink a drop of water. As for strange things… Oh right, I ate medicinal meat yesterday. Could that be related?" Wang Yu returned the mirror to the young warrior, thinking carefully before answering.
"If it’s your first time eating medicinal meat, the effect can be quite good and the improvements to your body may be noticeable, but it only makes you a bit stronger; it can’t make such a huge change to your body," Qingfeng shook his head.
"Elder Martial Brother, my strength has also suddenly become very great," Wang Yu said cautiously after hesitating for a moment.
"Very great? How great can it be?" Qingfeng glanced at Wang Yu, seeming unconvinced.
Wang Yu grinned, choosing to say no more, but after looking around, his gaze fell on a stone cauldron that was half a person tall next to the young warrior, and he walked over to it.
The young warrior watched Wang Yu and did not stop him.
After estimating the weight of the stone cauldron by its size, Wang Yu grabbed its bottom sides with both hands, let out a low shout, and surprisingly, the stone cauldron, which seemed to weigh around three to four hundred pounds, began to sway from side to side. Then with a strong effort from his arms, he lifted the cauldron above his head. After walking around the young Taoist, he released it with a loud bang, his face red, and put the cauldron back in its place, causing the ground nearby to shake a little.
A smile on Qingfeng’s face froze for a moment.
He walked a few steps to the side of the stone cauldron, reached out a hand to grab its edge, took a deep breath, and pushed with all his strength.
The stone cauldron wobbled slightly but remained in place.
"What are you doing…? Qiu Ye, come with me to see Master." Qingfeng turned around, grabbed Wang Yu’s arm without hesitation, and said with a hint of excitement in his expression.
"See Master? Okay, Elder Martial Brother." Wang Yu was taken aback for a moment but quickly nodded in agreement and followed the young Taoist toward the main hall.
The two entered the main hall, walked around the huge statue of the Nine Heavens Qiuyang Celestial Master, and then passed through a corridor to reach a quiet room.
"Master, I am here with Qiu Ye to see you." Qingfeng knocked twice on the door and said respectfully from outside.
"Qingfeng, why have you come now? Didn’t I promise you yesterday about your request?" came the calm voice of Taoist Chongyun from inside the quiet room.
"Master, I have come this time because of Junior Martial Brother Qiu Ye’s matter, but this time, I would like to ask the Master to personally accept Qiu Ye as a disciple of the White Cloud Temple." Qingfeng replied softly.
As the young Taoist said this, not only was Wang Yu greatly surprised, but there was also a sudden silence in the room. After a while, they heard Taoist Chongyun’s astonished voice:
"Qingfeng, you are usually very steady; surely you would not say this without reason."
"Master, after Junior Martial Brother Qiu Ye took the medicinal meat for the first time, it seems he awakened his bloodline power, but I do not know exactly what kind of bloodline it is." Qingfeng replied straightforwardly.
"What? He awakened his bloodline! You two, come in quickly." Taoist Chongyun’s voice rose a few notches within the quiet room.
Wang Yu felt a bit confused, but under the young Taoist’s urging, he had no choice but to walk into the quiet room.
The quiet room was empty; the walls were made of blue stone bricks, and aside from a yellow cushion on the floor, there was nothing else. The person sitting cross-legged on the cushion was Taoist Chongyun.
