Chapter 7: Medicinal Meat and the Jar
Inside the room, Dongyue opened the package, revealing its contents: besides a big bunch of shiny gold coins and two simple pieces of clothing, there was also a long strip of dark meat jerky.
"Here, Qiu Ye, for you," Dongyue said without hesitation, breaking the jerky in half and handing one piece to Wang Yu.
"Is this the good thing you were talking about?" Wang Yu held the jerky, slightly puzzled.
"Junior Martial Brother, this is not ordinary meat; it’s demonic beast whip, and it has been soaked in a special medicinal juice," the chubby boy pointed at the jerky, winking as he spoke.
"Medicinal Whip!"
Wang Yu’s face grew strange as he looked closely at the object in his hand.
It felt hard, and there was a faint smell of medicine, but its shape did look somewhat like a "whip."
"Yes, the demon beast whip is much more nourishing than regular meat. If you add other herbs to it, the effect will be even better. This medicinal meat is homemade by my family. I’ve been eating it since I was little; otherwise, how could I have such strength? You’ll know when you try it. This stuff is very nourishing. Every time I have porridge, I just tear off a piece and put it in; otherwise, I might get a nosebleed," Dongyue advised.
"Martial Brother, this must be expensive," Wang Yu said, looking at the black jerky in his hand, feeling a mix of amusement and hesitation as he asked.
"My family runs a meat shop in Yellow Stone City. This medicinal meat is a bit pricey for others, but not for us at all. Just enjoy it. This piece should be enough for you for about a month," Dongyue replied with a grin, showing no concern.
"Thank you, Martial Brother Dongyue. Then I will not hold back," Wang Yu thought for a moment, then placed the jerky in his pocket and thanked Dongyue with a respectful gesture.
"Haha, that’s right. Junior Martial Brother Qiu Ye, go home and try this. You’ll see I’m not lying; after just two or three days of eating it, you’ll immediately feel different!" Dongyue said with a hearty laugh.
Seeing Dongyue so confident made Wang Yu feel a bit more excited about the medicinal meat.
Evening time.
Wang Yu looked at the rice porridge filled with a delicious meaty aroma, drank it all in one go, and then moved his hands and feet a little in the room, doing some simple exercises to help with digestion.
Soon after, he began to feel his skin getting slightly itchy, starting from the top of his head, quickly spreading to his chest and back, and finally reaching his hands and legs, becoming itchier and making his whole body feel a bit warm.
He rolled up his sleeves and lifted his arm to take a closer look, noticing that the skin on his arm was red and looked a bit scary. Even without a mirror, he knew he must look very red in the face right now.
The reaction to this medicinal meat was so strong; it really surprised Wang Yu!
He felt his skin getting itchier and his body hotter, unable to stand it any longer, so he left the room and quickly ran around the Martial Arts Field behind the temple.
Wang Yu faced the cool mountain breeze, swinging his arms and moving his legs, and as he ran in circles, he felt as if he had endless energy. Normally he would be breathless after a few laps, but this time he ran ten laps non-stop and felt no fatigue, running faster and faster as if the wind was at his feet.
After a stick of incense burned down.
"Huff."
After Wang Yu let out a long breath and felt the heat inside him lessen, he stopped in the middle of the Martial Arts Field, glancing instinctively toward the temple, when suddenly he shivered and hurriedly called out, "Senior Brother Qingfeng!"
By the Martial Arts Field, a figure stood quietly in the shadows, the soft moonlight shining on a fair face. It was Qingfeng, whom they had seen during the day.
"Did you eat medicinal meat for the first time?" Qingfeng asked Wang Yu coldly, holding a small yellow jar covered with a thick gray cloth, which was tightly secured with several yellow strings around the opening.
"Yes, Martial Brother, this is my first time eating medicinal meat. Martial Brother Dongyue gave me a piece of his medicinal meat." Wang Yu quickly walked over, answering honestly, but he wondered in his heart why the other was there.
"Dongyue is quite generous. This medicinal meat is very valuable outside; it can be traded for the same weight in silver. Since it’s your first time using it, I’ll give you a little advice. The effects of medicinal meat are best during the first few times; later, it needs to be taken long-term to gradually improve your condition. If you want to get the best results from the medicinal meat, it’s best to exercise a lot these few days; it will only do you good," Qingfeng said softly.
"Thank you, big Martial Brother, for your guidance." Wang Yu nodded repeatedly, looking very obedient, but he was secretly astonished at how expensive the medicinal meat was. In Wang Tiezhu’s memory, one tael of silver could be exchanged for a big handful of copper coins, enough for his family to live well for a month.
Qingfeng glanced at Wang Yu again and asked, "I heard from the Master that you also have Spiritual Sensing?"
"Yes, the Temple Master did say that, but I still don’t understand what Spiritual Sensing really is," Wang Yu replied after a moment of confusion.
"Since you have Spiritual Sensing, come help me. First, hold this for me," Qingfeng said, a strange expression appearing on his face. He raised his arm and casually handed the yellow jar to Wang Yu.
"Okay, Elder Martial Brother." Wang Yu was caught off guard and instinctively took the jar with both hands, but he immediately shivered as a chilling power flowed directly from the jar to him, making him grimace and unable to help but ask, "Elder Martial Brother, what is inside this?"
"You will know soon, be careful with the things, come with me." After Qingfeng said this softly, he walked towards the stone house by the Martial Arts Field.
Wang Yu could only hold back the cold in his hands and followed closely, holding the jar tightly.
The stone house stood there, giving off a cool aura. On the dark copper lock of the big door, two pieces of yellow paper that looked like talismans were still there.
Wang Yu looked at the talismans and instinctively glanced at the jar in his hand, only to discover that at the bottom of the jar, there was also a similar talisman stuck closely to it, but it looked much newer than the ones on the copper lock.
At that moment, Qingfeng had reached the front of the door, and in a low voice, he seemed to say something. He touched the copper lock with one hand, and a faint white light flashed. The two pieces of paper silently floated down, and Qingfeng caught them in one swift motion and tucked them into his clothes.
Such mysterious power!
Wang Yu’s mouth slightly dropped open, and his heart began to race a little faster.
"Come in."
Qingfeng took out a rusty key and unlocked the copper lock, calling out before pushing the big door open and stepping inside the house.
Wang Yu took a deep breath and hurriedly followed him inside, but as soon as he stepped in, he shivered, feeling as if he were in a freezing world of ice and snow.
The stone room was not very large, but it was not as dark as he had imagined.
In front of him was a long altar table, and above it sat a statue of the "Nine Heavens Qiuyang Celestial Master" about a foot high. On either side of the tiny statue were old oil lamps, each with blackened patterns on the surface, the age of which was unknown.
What caught Wang Yu’s attention more was that underneath the altar table, there were several rows of tightly packed jars, all exactly like the one in his hand, and there were as many as twenty or thirty.
While Wang Yu was lost in thought, Qingfeng had already closed the door and even stuck two yellow talismans he had taken off the copper lock outside onto the door before pulling something from his pocket and instructing:
"Place the jar on the table, then hold this item and follow my orders."
Wang Yu placed the jar on the altar and took the object. Upon closer inspection, it was a small black wooden sword that looked like a child’s toy. It was about the length of a dagger, with a rough surface that barely resembled a sword, and it carried a faint burnt smell.
"Yes, Elder Martial Brother."
Wang Yu suppressed his doubts and obediently stood to the side.
The young Taoist pulled out a white ceramic bowl from under the offering table and placed it beside the jar. Then, he took out an oiled paper package from his pocket, opened it carefully, and inside was a piece of bloody fresh meat.
Without hesitation, Qingfeng tossed the piece of meat into the white bowl and said to Wang Yu with a serious expression:
"When I say go, you must stab the piece of meat with this Thunderwood sword. You have to be quick and use all your strength."
"Yes." "Yes."
Wang Yu eagerly replied, glancing at the piece of meat a few more times. He felt a strange sensation, as if the meat was slightly wriggling in the bowl, which made him feel uneasy.
After taking a deep breath, Qingfeng ripped off the yellow talismans from the bottom of the jar and quickly stepped back a few paces.
"Bang." "Bang."
The previously calm jar suddenly shook, and the thick cloth covering the top began to rise and fall, as if something wanted to escape from inside.
Wang Yu’s heart was racing, and he accidentally tightened his grip on the wooden sword.
With a series of crackling sounds, the yellow lines around the jar suddenly broke, and something inside finally burst out from underneath the thick cloth.
Wang Yu’s eyes went wide with shock!
What flew out was a black mass the size of a head, and as it burst out of the jar, it rushed towards the nearby Qingfeng with a "wooo" sound.
"Here it comes!"
Qingfeng seemed to be ready; he held something in his hand and punched the approaching black mist.
A sharp "bang" rang out!
A thin electric arc appeared on Qingfeng’s fist, and with one punch, he sent the black mass flying. It shrank in size, but its wailing sound grew louder. After a turn in the air, it changed direction and charged towards Wang Yu, who was a bit farther away.
Wang Yu felt a strange chill rushing towards him, his heart racing with fear. Just as he didn’t know if he should use his wooden sword to defend himself, Qingfeng swiftly dashed in front of him and punched the black mass away again.
This time, the black mass not only shrank in size but also looked duller. After a few mournful wails, it helplessly headed towards the bloody pieces of meat on the altar below. It blurred for a moment and then vanished into it.
"Now is the time, act!" Qingfeng shouted loudly.
Wang Yu quickly ran to the offering table, gripping the tiny wooden sword in both hands, and thrust it fiercely into the piece of meat.
"Thud."
It felt as if Wang Yu was not piercing through meat but rather a piece of rotten wood; he barely used all his strength to push it in a few inches, while at the same time, strange green smoke began to rise from the surface of the meat, swirling madly under the tip of the sword.
Wang Yu felt the smell of the green smoke was terrible, making him want to throw up, and a huge force came from under the wooden sword, as if the piece of meat was trying to break free. He felt a surge of fear and wanted to let go of the wooden sword and step back to escape.
