Chapter 6: Taking a Master
A gentle breeze swept through the garden, making the flowers sway. The family of three waited for a long time, extremely nervous, only to find that nothing unusual happened, and the legendary immortal did not appear. The father and son looked at Xue Erniang with suspicion, who blushed and said awkwardly: “I’m not making this up, this is truly what has been passed down through generations in my family.”
“Are you a descendant of Xue Daniu?” While the three were looking at the shattered jade on the ground, an unfamiliar yet ancient voice came from behind them. The three were startled and turned around. An elderly man with white hair but a youthful face, a kind expression, holding a duster, and dressed in white robes, was smiling at the family of three.
“Ah…” The three were stunned. Yue Qianchou reacted the fastest, thinking to himself: ‘With such an impressive appearance, exactly like those in TV shows, he must be an immortal or I’ll be damned.’ He was the first to drop to his knees with a thud. With their son taking the lead, the couple also knelt down without hesitation. Xue Erniang replied: “Xue Erniu was indeed my great-grandfather.”
“Hehe! Since you are descendants of an old friend, there’s no need for such formality. Please rise!” the old man said with a smile. After the three stood up obediently, the old man asked again: “May I know why you have summoned me here?”
The family of three looked at each other, not knowing how to begin. Yue Qianchou bit his lip, knelt down, and said: “I wish to ask the immortal master to accept me as a disciple and take me to cultivate immortality.”
“Stand up when you speak!” the old man raised his hand slightly. Yue Qianchou thought: ‘Damn it! You haven’t agreed yet, how can I stand up now? It seems that in ancient times, when seeking a master, one had to kneel until the other person agreed.’ Though thinking this, he naturally remained kneeling.
The old man gave him a meaningful look. Yue Qianchou’s heart skipped a beat, and he thought to himself: ‘No way! Can he see what I’m thinking?’
The immortal paced and sighed: “Xue Daniu did me a favor. When I left back then, I foresaw that his descendants would face the calamity of having their lineage cut off, so I left this spiritual jade pendant, intending to help the Xue family resolve this calamity and repay the kindness. Now it seems… Alas!” He shook his head, looked at Yue Qianchou, and continued: “Young man, I don’t mean to belittle you, but your innate talent is extremely poor. You are not at all suited for immortal cultivation. Even if I took you back to the mountain, you would have no future to speak of. Think carefully. Why not change your request? Would that be acceptable?”
After hearing the immortal master’s words, Yue Changgui and his wife deeply agreed and looked at their son with concern.
‘Damn it! The old man talks too much; he’s just trying to renege. Change my request? I’ve experienced everything in my past life. Do you think there’s anything else in this broken place that could attract me besides immortals? Such a good opportunity—if I miss it, where else could I find another? Damn it! I won’t change it. Let’s see who has the thicker skin.’ Yue Qianchou thought to himself, saying nothing, deliberately staring blankly at the shattered jade on the ground, bowing his head and remaining motionless.
Yue Qianchou’s behavior clearly showed that he didn’t want to change his request. Seeing their son like this, the couple truly feared that the immortal master would lose face, but they didn’t know whether they should speak up.
The old man frowned, thinking to himself that this young man was truly ignorant of what was good for him. He spoke with displeasure: “Since you are unwilling to change your request, I will keep my promise. However, regarding accepting you as a disciple, my status does not allow it, so I cannot do so. But I can find another good master for you. Are you willing?”
‘Alright, I shouldn’t push this old man too far. If I anger him, he might just leave, and that would be the end of it.’ Yue Qianchou quickly kowtowed repeatedly, saying: “I am willing, willing.”
“Then let’s go!” The old man waved his sleeve. Yue Qianchou, who had just stood up to say goodbye to his parents, suddenly found himself unable to move. Everything went dark, and he couldn’t see anything. He only heard a whooshing sound in his ears, and couldn’t help but curse the old immortal’s ancestors for eighteen generations in his heart.
In the garden, the couple, seeing the two suddenly disappear before their eyes, were stunned, but they knew that their son had been taken away by the immortal master…
…
Qingguang Mountain, home to the Qingguang Sect,
Where immortal traces hide in deep mist and clouds.
A paradise on earth with endless joy,
Where one wishes to dwell for a lifetime.
Qingguang Mountain, about a thousand zhang high, covering thousands of li, was steep and treacherous. Dense forests filled with wild beasts surrounded its base, making it a rarely visited place. What the common people didn’t know was that the mountaintop presented an entirely different landscape. The Qingguang Sect, a formidable power in the cultivation world, was located at the summit.
A streak of light flashed across the sky and landed in front of the Qingguang Sect’s entrance. Yue Qianchou’s body relaxed, and his vision cleared. After being unable to see for so long, he could finally see things again. Looking around, he found himself at a mountaintop. Halfway up the mountain were clouds and mist, and the entire summit was shrouded in a hazy green light. Yue Qianchou thought to himself: ‘What a heavenly paradise, truly a place where immortals would live.’
“Follow me!” the old man beside him called out. Young Master Yue quickly followed. Two young attendants at the mountain gate saw the old man and bowed together, saying: “Greetings, Sect Leader!” The old man nodded and made a sound of acknowledgment. Yue Qianchou was startled, his heart pounding, and he thought: ‘Goodness, he’s the sect leader! Incredible! So this old man is also a boss, just like me in my previous life—we’re in the same line of work, both leaders!’ He hurriedly followed.
Along the way, many people paid their respects to the old man. Yue Qianchou eventually arrived at a grand hall. The hall, with its wood carvings and stone sculptures, was spacious, magnificent, and resplendent with gold and jade. The young man thought to himself: ‘If this place were developed for tourism in my previous life, with its natural environment and scenery, it would definitely make a fortune. Hmm! The mountain is too high; first, we’d need to install a cable car to the summit.’
After Yue Qianchou followed the old man into the hall, several elderly men stood up from their meditation cushions and greeted him: “Senior Brother Sect Leader!” The old man smiled at both sides, walked directly to the central, primary cushion, and sat down. Yue Qianchou obediently stood beside him, while the others also sat down, but all eyes were fixed on Yue Qianchou, examining him.
The old man smiled and explained: “A hundred years ago, I owed someone in Swallow City a life-saving debt. Now his descendant has come to me, wishing to join the Qingguang Sect to cultivate. To repay this debt, I had no choice but to bring this young man up the mountain. To be honest, his innate talent is extremely poor, completely unsuitable for cultivation. I wonder which junior brother would be willing to give me face and take him in, even if just to have him do odd jobs.”
‘Damn it! You old fossil, talking about me like that, not giving me any face in front of all these people! Actually wanting me to do odd jobs. Just you wait! One day I’ll tear down this damn Qingguang Sect of yours…’ Yue Qianchou cursed endlessly in his heart, but didn’t dare show it on his face. He understood the principle of having to bow one’s head when under someone else’s roof.
However, looking at the group of old men in the hall, it seemed that few of them thought highly of him, and no one was willing to take him as a disciple. After a long silence, a disheveled old man sitting at the back stood up and said: “Then let him follow me! I don’t have any disciples anyway.”
The sect leader, whose expression had gradually darkened, now smiled and said: “Thank you, junior brother! Now go and pay your respects to your master.” The last sentence was directed at Yue Qianchou beside him.
Yue Qianchou quickly ran over, kowtowed three times to the disheveled old man, and said: “Disciple Yue Qianchou pays respects to Master!”
The old man smiled, told him to rise, and then said to the sect leader: “Senior Brother Sect Leader! I’ll take him back now.” The sect leader nodded, and everyone congratulated him on having a good disciple. The old man smiled and shook his head, leading Yue Qianchou away. The latter cursed in his heart: ‘A bunch of damned bastards!’
