Chapter 4: Eliminating a Major Threat
Yue Qianchou expected his body to recover after just one day of rest. Little did he know that this physical vessel was far inferior to his previous life’s body. Though still a virgin, his constitution proved extremely poor, taking nearly three days to recover. But this wasn’t what frustrated him most.
What truly frustrated him was remembering something that pained him deeply. Having transmigrated here, the hundreds of millions in his Swiss bank account from his previous life had gone to waste. By his calculations, his previous wealth was worth at least ten times the current Yue family fortune. The more he thought about it, the more it hurt, causing him to lose his appetite for several days. Finally, he came to terms with it—even if he hadn’t transmigrated, he would have faced execution anyway.
The most tragic thing in life occurs when a child wishes to care for their parents, but the parents are no longer there. Guo Jianjun’s parents had passed away early, preventing him from fulfilling his filial duties. Now as Yue Qianchou, he experienced his parents checking on him multiple times daily, showing abundant care and affection. This quickly healed his heart, wounded by the loss of his fortune. Facing these two elders, he genuinely embraced them as his own birth parents.
While strolling through the Yue family garden, Yue Qianchou reflected on many things. The education from his previous life had instilled an invisible pressure regarding country and nation. No matter how outrageous some of his actions were, he never crossed certain lines. Now everything differed—this place had absolutely nothing to do with his former world. Big Brother Guo, no, Young Master Yue, had made up his mind to act freely and stir things up here.
His mind was now full of thoughts about what method to use to eliminate Xue Gaibao. He thought until his head ached but couldn’t come up with a suitable plan. His biggest concern was his current parents, especially his mother, who treasured this sole heir of the Xue family dearly.
In the garden, flowers were in full bloom. Yue Qianchou circled around several times but still couldn’t think of a good solution. Looking at a golden chrysanthemum before him, Young Master Yue stared at it intently for a long time, until he finally exhaled deeply, reached out to pluck the chrysanthemum, and sniffed its fragrance under his nose. With narrowed eyes, he muttered: “When something needs to be cut off but isn’t, it causes more chaos. Damn it! These past few days I’ve been eating and drinking in constant fear. If this continues, I won’t be killed by him, but I’ll scare myself to death—I’m almost having a nervous breakdown. Isn’t he the only son of the Xue family? Well, I’m the only son of the Yue family too! Why should I suffer like this? If you can make the first move, why can’t I make the countermove?”
After Yue Qianchou left, the garden was quiet. On the clean stone path, there was only a chrysanthemum that had been crushed to pieces.
…
Xue Gaibao was quite pleased. His cousin had been cold and distant toward him these past few days, but today he had actually invited him to drink wine and appreciate the moon in the back garden. He had been worried that his actions from before had been discovered by Yue Qianchou, making him anxious, but it seemed he had overthought things.
After the Xue family’s downfall, he had sought refuge with his aunt. Living in the Yue household, although he wasn’t mistreated, being dependent on others made him, who was used to being a young master, feel as uncomfortable as if needles were pricking his spine. The pocket money his aunt gave him wasn’t little, but compared to his previous lavish spending at home, it was still somewhat tight. With Young Master Yue above him, he, Young Master Xue, couldn’t give orders here. Over time, resentment built up in his heart.
Once, while drinking alone at a restaurant, he complained drunkenly: “You, Yue Changgui, without my Xue family, how could you have what you have today? But what about you! You only give me a hundred taels of silver each month. How ungrateful…”
These words all fell into the ears of someone at a neighboring table. This person was a bandit leader from Eight Corners Stronghold. After learning that Xue Gaibao was the nephew of Yue Changgui, the wealthiest man in Swallow City, he wanted to befriend him. As a result, the two hit it off immediately. They subsequently plotted to kidnap Yue Qianchou and extort Yue Changgui, planning to silence him after getting the money. This way, Eight Corners Stronghold would get the wealth, and Xue Gaibao would inherit the Yue family’s fortune. But contrary to their expectations, although they kidnapped Yue Qianchou, he managed to escape.
Afterward, seeing that Yue Qianchou had been brought back home, Xue Gaibao feared exposure and again harbored murderous intentions. However, Uncle Yue Changgui had people guarding him day and night, so he never had the opportunity to act.
He had been quite worried, but today his cousin had come smiling to invite him for wine and moon appreciation. His heart finally eased. His cousin obviously didn’t know about his involvement in the matter. Not knowing was good; he would find another opportunity next time.
After the maid helped him tidy his clothes, Xue Gaibao happily went to the meeting.
In the garden, wine and dishes were prepared on a stone table. Yue Qianchou waited alone with a lantern. The candlelight flickered, casting uncertain shadows on his face. His fingers were lightly tapping on the stone table when footsteps approached. Yue Qianchou coldly glanced toward the garden entrance, then immediately replaced his expression with an eager smile.
“Cousin! You’ve kept me waiting!” Yue Qianchou stood up and smiled.
Xue Gaibao approached, pointing at himself and saying: “My clothes weren’t proper; how could I come to cousin’s invitation like that?”
“We’re all family, why be so formal? Please sit, cousin.” Yue Qianchou invited him to sit down and picked up the wine pot to pour him a drink. As he raised his hand, he accidentally knocked over the lantern on the table.
The lantern fell to the ground, the candle went out, and darkness suddenly enveloped them. Yue Qianchou exclaimed: “Look how clumsy I am.”
“Don’t worry, cousin, we’ll just light it again. I’ll pick it up.” Xue Gaibao smiled and bent down to retrieve it. Just as he straightened up, he saw a dark shadow strike down. Xue Gaibao let out a muffled groan and fell.
In the moonlight, Yue Qianchou, holding a club, circled around the stone table. With both hands gripping the club, he furiously bashed the head of the person on the ground. After a while, he stopped, kicked the body with his foot, and said: “Damn it! I don’t want to waste words with you. I was afraid you wouldn’t die!”
The candlelight was relit, and Young Master Yue held the lantern over the bloody, mangled corpse on the ground. He poked it again with the club, and seeing that it was completely dead, he nodded. He placed the lantern back on the table, poured himself a cup of wine, drank it in one gulp, and smacked his lips, saying: “Finally got rid of this trouble. Now I can sleep peacefully. Feels good! The aftermath is for the old man to worry about. I don’t believe he would send his only son to the authorities.”
With that, he left carrying the club, muttering to himself. One could vaguely hear him saying: “Damn it! In such a large Yue mansion, I couldn’t find a suitable weapon and had to get such a thick club from the firewood pile.”
Young Master Yue carried the club to the kitchen, threw it into the stove, dusted off his hands, and left. He circled to near the main gate and squatted down in a corner. After squatting for a while, Yue Qianchou felt like something was missing. He touched his chest, froze, and sighed: “I’ll have to quit smoking even if I don’t want to. Damn it! Where can I find cigarettes here?”
The main gate opened, and Yue Changgui, who had just finished some social engagements, returned with two attendants. After walking a few steps, he suddenly heard someone call out: “Father!”
It was his son’s voice. Yue Changgui was startled, turned around, and saw Yue Qianchou squatting in the shadowy corner. He frowned and said: “Chou’er! Why are you squatting here? Your body has just recovered; be careful not to catch a cold.”
“Father! I have something to discuss with you,” Yue Qianchou said as he slowly approached. Yue Changgui understood that his son had been waiting for him here, and it was the first time he had seen him do this. He said to the attendants behind him: “You two go back and rest.” The two respectfully withdrew.
“What is it?” Yue Changgui asked lovingly. Yue Qianchou said: “Father, come with me.” The former didn’t ask anything more and followed his son to the garden.
Yue Qianchou picked up the lantern from the stone table and illuminated the corpse on the ground. Yue Changgui looked in the direction of the candlelight. The person lying on the ground was already a bloody mess, with the head smashed to pulp, making it impossible to identify who it was. But he could still recognize the clothing worn by people in the Yue household and vaguely guessed who the corpse was. His brows furrowed slightly, and he asked: “Is it your cousin?”
Yue Qianchou nodded, observing his father’s expression. Seeing that his reaction wasn’t strong, he thought to himself: “Indeed, I wasn’t wrong. Someone who can build such a large business can’t be simple.”
Yue Changgui sat down on a stone bench, stared at his son, and asked: “Why did you do this? Was your kidnapping related to him?”
His son didn’t directly answer his question but instead took the wine pot and filled his father’s cup, saying: “The wine and dishes are clean; no one has touched them.” He then filled his own cup, sat down, and after drinking a cup, slowly recounted what had happened.
As Yue Qianchou spoke, Yue Changgui’s expression grew increasingly grim. When the former finished, the latter slammed the table in anger and said: “So it was indeed this ungrateful dog! He actually wanted to end my Yue family’s lineage. I had suspected it was him. If it weren’t for your mother’s sake, I would have made him beg for death but be unable to die.”
“Father! I killed him with my own hands. I’m afraid if mother finds out…” Before Yue Qianchou could finish, Yue Changgui waved his hand and said: “You know nothing. Go back and rest! I’ll handle this.”
“I understand, Father. Then I’ll go wash up and sleep?” Yue Qianchou asked, and his father nodded.
Watching his son leave calmly, Yue Changgui was slightly surprised. He hadn’t expected his son to kill someone with his own hands, and even more, he hadn’t expected his son to be so calm about it. He knew what kind of psychological fortitude that required. It seemed the shock from the kidnapping had changed him, but looking at it now, it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It was better than him being a confused young master as before. After drinking a cup of wine, he sighed: “My Yue family has a worthy successor.”
“I haven’t been a big brother for many years, I don’t like the cold edge of the bed, don’t force me to reminisce, don’t force me to cry, I will turn on you…” Having eliminated a major threat, the washed Yue Qianchou lay on his bed, legs propped up, humming a song, and gradually fell into a peaceful sleep.
