Chapter 2: My Mom and My Dad
Something licked back and forth across my face. Could it be that I didn’t die? Guo Jianjun refused to believe in things like the underworld or afterlife. His first thought was that he had survived. He struggled to open his heavy eyelids as bright sunlight pierced through the tree branches above, dazzling him.
I really didn’t die! This thought struck him as he opened his eyes. A big red tongue swayed back and forth before his face. When his eyes focused, a dog’s head appeared right in front of him—a big yellow dog.
The dog, seeing that he had awakened, began jumping around excitedly, appearing extremely thrilled.
Guo Jianjun felt slightly stunned, then realized his body was extremely weak. He struggled to prop himself up with his hands, but before he could sit up completely, his hand gave way and he collapsed back down with a thud. Damn! This is from hunger. Guo Jianjun had participated in wilderness survival training during his military service and recognized this feeling, but his body had weakened to such an extent that death loomed near. Panic immediately set in—he had just survived the government’s execution, only to potentially die of starvation.
Damn! How long have I been sleeping to become this hungry? Guo Jianjun clearly understood that his current condition indicated his physical state had reached a dangerous point. A bowl of sugar water would be perfect—it could help him quickly recover some strength. But obviously, that wasn’t possible in his current situation.
What to do? I can’t just wait here to die! I need food. He surveyed his surroundings, racking his brains, but couldn’t think of any solution. The big yellow dog, seeing that he had stopped moving again, panted as it approached him.
Got it! Dog blood is highly nutritious! It’s perfect for recovering strength. With a target in mind, Guo Jianjun prepared to act. Survival trumped everything else. His hand groped around on the ground and grasped a stone.
Looking at the dog, it seemed quite familiar with him, though Guo Jianjun didn’t recognize it. What came to mind was that when hitting a dog, you should aim for the nose—one hit, one success. He had experience with this. His hand slowly wrapped around the dog’s neck. The big yellow dog showed no wariness at all and seemed quite happy, wagging its tail cheerfully.
“Howl… howl…” Suddenly the big yellow dog let out a series of pitiful cries. Guo Jianjun had concentrated his strength for a long time, putting it all into the stone in his hand, unleashing it on the dog’s nose beneath his arm. He collapsed, exhausted. After the big yellow dog broke free, it struggled for a long time before slowly lying on the ground, lifeless. Its eyes stared fixedly at the person in front of it, as if unable to believe what had happened.
Guo Jianjun rested for a while, then desperately crawled over and wrapped his arms around the dog’s neck, biting frantically. No matter how uncomfortable the dog hair felt in his mouth, he didn’t care. He bit through the dog’s neck desperately, and a fishy, dry, slightly salty liquid flowed into his mouth. He gulped it down into his stomach.
After burping, Guo Jianjun breathed a sigh of relief, rolled over, and rested his head on the big yellow dog’s corpse. Not long after the dog blood reached his stomach, a burning heat began surging toward his limbs and bones. He knew it was working. Guo Jianjun lay there thinking about what had really happened, quietly waiting for his strength to recover.
The scene of the execution was right before his eyes. It seemed like he had been struck by lightning, but fortunately, he obviously hadn’t been killed by it. But how did he end up here? The execution personnel had no reason to just let him go like this. The day before sentencing, personnel from a certain national agency had clearly told him that he was definitely going to die this time, otherwise they couldn’t explain it to international public opinion.
Thinking it over, there was one possibility worth suspecting. He didn’t know which brother from the underworld had rescued him from the execution ground—that took guts and courage. Damn it, if you’re going to save someone, save them completely. Why dump me here and nearly starve me to death? Still, this was a huge favor owed. No matter, staying alive was good news. There were still several hundred million in deposits in Swiss banks. He could repay this favor later. Sigh! This place wasn’t safe to stay long. He needed to find a secure place to hide first.
He clenched his fists. Although his strength hadn’t fully recovered, he should have enough energy to walk. He stood up unsteadily. Guo Jianjun wondered where this was. Looking around, he was immediately stunned. Directly ahead of the forest, not too far but not too close, stood an ancient city wall. He could vaguely see people going in and out of the city gate, and strangely, some people were riding horses in and out. He couldn’t help but mutter: “Are they filming a movie? Did I end up at Hengdian Film Studio? I wonder which brother from the underworld did this—they actually had the ability to bring me this far? I wonder if this place is safe?”
With a string of doubts, the weak Guo Jianjun slowly walked toward the edge of the forest. He hadn’t walked far when, while resting against a tree, he heard rustling sounds behind him. Looking back, he saw an old woodcutter carrying firewood emerging from the forest. Guo Jianjun smiled wryly, thinking to himself that the costume was quite convincing—they really were filming a movie.
The old woodcutter, seeing the person ahead, paid no attention and continued walking with his load. When he passed by Guo Jianjun, he looked up, and just after passing, he suddenly stopped. The load on his shoulder slipped to the ground, and he turned around to look at Guo Jianjun with surprise and joy.
“Trouble! This old guy seems to recognize me. Did they issue a national wanted notice?” Guo Jianjun was greatly alarmed. In an instant, evil thoughts arose from his courage, and he thought: “I’ll have to kill him to silence him, otherwise with my current physical condition, it would be hard to escape.”
But the old woodcutter looked at Guo Jianjun with a face full of joy and shouted: “Young Master Yue! How are you here? Where have you been all this time? Master Yue is sending people everywhere to look for you!”
“Heh heh! Pretending to mistake me for someone else! This old bastard is definitely up to no good, actually daring to play this game with me. Does he think I’m some rookie who just entered the scene? Well, don’t blame me for being impolite!” Guo Jianjun looked coldly at the approaching woodcutter, slowly clenching his fists.
The old woodcutter called out enthusiastically: “Young Master Yue! Come back with me quickly! Master Yue is worried sick!”
“This old guy is really acting well—worthy of being an actor. He even dares to call me Young Master Yue!” Just as Guo Jianjun’s killing intent arose when the man approached, suddenly his mind thundered, and the words “Young Master Yue” circled in his brain. He collapsed to the ground.
…
In his unconsciousness, everything about Young Master Yue appeared continuously in his mind like a movie. When Guo Jianjun opened his eyes again, he was already lying on a soft bed. In front of him was a girl with maid’s braids looking at him. This girl was very familiar—so familiar that Guo Jianjun could call out her name immediately.
Seeing that Guo Jianjun had awakened, the girl cried out joyfully: “Master! Madam! The young master is awake!” She called out while running outside.
Damn! This voice was also very familiar. Guo Jianjun wanted to cry. He wasn’t stupid. Combining the cause and effect with the extra memories in his head, he remembered something very absurd that he had read countless times in web novels… Guo Jianjun had really died. He had transmigrated. If he wasn’t mistaken, he was now called Yue Qianchou. This should be the residence of Yue Changgui, the biggest wealthy merchant in Swallow City.
“Chou’er!” Before the person arrived, a woman’s voice had already come from outside the door. A series of hurried footsteps followed.
‘This is my mother’s voice’. Guo Jianjun knew who it was just from the voice. The image of a kind woman appeared in his mind, completely matching the noble lady who walked to the bedside. Beside the woman, a chubby middle-aged man was looking at him with concern.
‘This is my father’. Guo Jianjun’s last trace of doubt disappeared, and he was completely speechless. His identifying gaze passed dully over the crowd gathered around the bed and stopped on one of the young men. If Guo Jianjun wasn’t mistaken, this person was his cousin. Remembering a scene from his mind, Guo Jianjun’s eyes narrowed slightly, and a cold gleam flashed through them.
