“…That’s all the information I received from the Revelation.”
“Yulg, Rolo, go check the pentagram barrier shrines. Immediately!”
“On it!”
At Saran’s unusually flustered order, Rolo and I dashed off into the night. Even with all the recent commotion, there still weren’t enough adventurers. If Marhas were to lose its protective barrier in this situation, it’d be a disaster.
“We’ll check from the road side! Once we pass the arch, I’ll go clockwise, you go counterclockwise!”
“Got it! Be careful!”
Just as we passed under the arch engraved with the village’s name, Rolo waved his fingers and cast enhancement magic on me. Even with moonlight, Night Vision is a huge help. He really is thoughtful, as always.
Grateful, I kept moving toward the first shrine. The shrines that house the keystones had been repositioned to ensure the central area of “Frontier City Marhas”—especially where the church was planned—was the most heavily protected. As the name “Pentagram Barrier” suggests, the shrines were arranged to form a five-pointed shape around the village.
“First one’s fine. Alright… next!”
I pointed and double-checked to confirm it wasn’t damaged or unlocked, then ran off again. Still, I figured the two shrines along the road would be fine. The enemy would come from the forest—the uncharted region. That meant the most likely targets were the shrines on the boundary with the forest.
“Second one’s good too. Alright…”
I sprinted toward the third shrine, the one most likely to be targeted. Hopefully, nothing’s happened, but Fimia’s vision didn’t specify when the danger would come. Still, if I was there in her vision, then it can’t be far off.
I ran full speed through the forest, which until recently had been unexplored territory. Eventually, this area too would be cleared and become part of the expanding “Frontier City.” Marhas is changing—for the better, I believe. Which is why I can’t let that idiot interfere.
With that in mind, I arrived at the third shrine—
And of course, that bad feeling was right. But at least I wasn’t too late.
“AAALBEEEERT!!”
Seeing the former leader raise his sword to the shrine, I charged him full-speed and slammed into his side.
“Huh? Wha—!?”
He let out a mixture of surprise and panic as he was launched sideways. Even a greyback bear wouldn’t walk away unfazed from a body slam like mine. A mere man in armor would go flying.
“Hah… damn it. Barely made it in time.”
“Urghhh… glghhh…”
Albert, slammed into a thick tree trunk, vomits from the impact. Stubborn bastard… but then again, he did survive plenty of close calls with us. This much won’t kill him.
“Y-Yulg… why are you here…?!”
“Night patrol. Got a problem with that?”
I keep quiet about the Revelation. This idiot has been manipulated by an intelligent monster. I can’t afford to give him any more information than necessary.
Besides, the fact that he didn’t figure it out the moment I showed up—he never really understood his old teammates at all. He should at least know that the ‘Saint’ Fimia can use Revelation.
“Yulg! —…Albert!?”
“Yup. Caught a suspicious character. Guess night patrol’s worth doing after all.”
Just in case, I throw in a bit of an act. If it’s smart little Rolo, he’ll catch on immediately.
“So? What should we do with him? Breaking a barrier’s a serious crime, right?”
Under kingdom law, damaging protective barrier facilities—like keystones and shrines—is a major offense threatening national security. Usually, it’s punishable by death or lifelong forced labor with a criminal brand.
Now, what about attempted destruction…?
“It’s your fault! All of you!”
Albert, picking up his sword, yells and rises to his feet. Took my body slam head-on and still stands—gotta hand it to him.
Though… if he wants to fight back, it’ll make killing him that much easier.
“I’ve got no interest in arguing. Come on, I’ll grind you into mince.”
Lifting my war mace, I glare at Albert. Surely you haven’t forgotten, have you? What you said to Rolo, how you exiled him… I never forgave you for that.
“That’s enough, Yulg.”
Just as I shifted my weight for the kill, a calm voice rang out. I glanced over—Saran had arrived, with Fimia in tow.
“Rolo, bind him with magic.”
“Okay.”
Rolo snapped her fingers, and faintly glowing chains of magic crawled up from the ground, binding Albert’s body from the feet up. Binding Chains, was it? One of Rolo’s specialty spells… been a while since I saw it.
“Stop it! Let me go!”
“Hey, Saran. Wouldn’t it be better if I just killed him here?”
“As the leader of ‘Mercia,’ aiming to become the next State-Sanctioned party, it would look very bad for you to kill your former party’s leader. Frankly, from a crisis-management standpoint, I do think it’d be better to eliminate him…”
Saran’s gaze shifts toward a group of adventurers who had come to check out the commotion. Well, Albert was shouting like a lunatic. No surprise the new district heard.
“I’ll take full responsibility for handling him.”
“…Alright. I’ll stay out here and keep watch for now.”
We stopped Albert for now, but just in case, I’ll stay here on patrol. Also… if I went back into the village right now, all riled up, I’d probably just scare the locals.
“Understood. Rolo, bring Albert with you.”
Saran gave a brief nod, then turned on his heel and walked off without even glancing back at the slumped Albert.
