Chapter 6: What Is the Name of Mom’s Mom?
In the endless darkness, clusters of white light floated about.
The orbs of light pulsed, brightening and dimming as if they were breathing.
“Lin Yu, you have been chosen.”
One of the light spheres, still unaware of its situation, suddenly heard a vague, ethereal voice coming from above.
The voice was devoid of gender, emotion, or warmth.
“Chosen? What do you mean? Am I dreaming? Where is this place? Why am I like this? And who are you? How do you know my name?”
“You, along with ninety-nine others, will reincarnate into a world governed by us. If you successfully kill the other ninety-nine, you will become a god, gaining eternal life and supreme power.”
“Hey, answer my questions first! And what do you mean by reincarnation? Killing to become a god? Immortality? Supreme power? What nonsense are you talking about?”
“Lin Yu, you may make one wish. This is your blessing.”
“A wish? Then I wish to go home. And answer my earlier questions! Please?”
“If you become a god, you can return home afterward.”
“Hey, why do you keep ignoring what I say?!”
Pfft—
“Huh? Did you just laugh?”
“Make your wish.”
“Hmph, fine. Any wish is allowed, right? Even something like invincibility?”
“Yes.”
“…But I don’t really like fighting. In that case… Hmm, I’ve decided! Please grant me an army of invincible, loyal subordinates!”
“Wish granted. Try your best to survive.”
***
Lin Yu woke up from her dream to find her invincible, loyal children standing guard around her.
You’ve all worked hard. I’d love to say that, but you probably wouldn’t understand, right?
I had a dream about that bizarre event…
Kill ninety-nine others to become a god? What absolute nonsense!
It felt like a cruel joke, but considering that she really had been reincarnated as an ant, the voice didn’t seem so crazy anymore.
Even so, just because someone said you’d become a god by killing ninety-nine others, did that make it true? Anyone who blindly believed that must be an idiot.
But instinct told her that among the other ninety-nine reincarnators, at least one would be that kind of fool.
Of course, for whoever actually decided to kill the others, there was no downside. If what that voice said was true, then the one who succeeded might really become a god.
That kind of person wouldn’t be an idiot. They’d be a serial killer.
Me?
I would never become a serial killer!
But as the saying goes—Don’t have the intent to harm others, but always be prepared to defend yourself.
Wait, is that how the saying goes? Whatever, close enough!
To survive, I need to grow stronger! But since I’m not good at fighting…
I will make my children stronger instead!
…
But for now, survival comes first.
What is the bear up to?
Through her link with the [Weak Ants], Lin Yu learned that from last night until morning, the bear had been lazily sleeping in the cave.
Maybe it hadn’t slept enough yet? Perhaps it would leave after more rest.
Now that I think about it, I didn’t get enough sleep either…
With that thought, Lin Yu lazily curled up again.
Might as well go back to sleep.
***
After she had a full night’s rest, her status had recovered a little bit:
________________________________________HP: 7/10
MP: 4/12
________________________________________
She had enough MP to lay eggs again, but just like in mobile games, stamina—or energy—would keep regenerating if left alone.
No need to use it immediately.
Besides, there were hardly any eggshells left. She guessed there was only enough to sustain her for three more egg-laying sessions.
Since food was an issue, she decided to conserve her resources.
So she decided to go back to sleep. When she woke up again, the [Weak Ants] reported that the bear was still inside the cave.
Maybe it’s just not hungry yet? After all, it had feasted on a massive beast only yesterday.
Should I sneak out while it’s asleep?
There was quite some distance from here to the cave entrance, but if the bear was highly alert, things could go south quickly.
A creature capable of living alone in this cave probably had keen instincts.
And even though they were pretty small, the [Weak Ants] would be large enough to catch its attention.
I need to be cautious. My life is on the line here.
For now, she decided to wait a little longer.
***
The next day arrived.
The lazy bear showed no signs of leaving to hunt.
Lin Yu was starting to feel restless.
She suddenly recalled that in her previous world, some animals could go for long periods without food. Since the bear had eaten well just two days ago, it probably wasn’t in any rush to hunt again.
What should I do…?
Because of the food shortage, I avoided “doing that” all day yesterday.
Doing what?
Don’t make me say it! Whether it’s laying eggs or giving birth, neither are things a fourteen-year-old girl should be talking about!
To conserve food, even the [Weak Ants] hadn’t eaten the entire day.
Still, they seemed fine. Their thoughts hadn’t included the word “hungry” at all.
But by nightfall…
Thanks to [Unique Skill—Ant Queen], Lin Yu saw the thoughts of all thirty [Weak Ants] at once.
Thirty glaringly obvious ‘Hungry’ thoughts.
If a mother doesn’t feed her hungry children, wouldn’t that be neglect?
I need to be a good mother.
So, Lin Yu led the [Weak Ants] to her mother’s corpse.
‘Eat up, eat up. No need to be polite in front of mom.’
The [Weak Ants] didn’t hesitate. Ever since they were born, the only thought they have had so far was ‘Hungry.’
Lin Yu was pleased. In fact, if they had shown signs of individuality, she would have found it troublesome.
Honestly, I’m a bit of a social phobic…
Not severely so, but she struggled to express her thoughts when talking to others. Being stared at made her anxious, and she tended to look away instinctively.
She also had trouble showing emotions, which had unintentionally earned her the reputation of a cold-faced beauty back in school.
Of course, chatting online had never been an issue.
The [Weak Ants] surrounded their “grandmother.”
In some sense, Lin Yu’s mother was their grandmother, but they clearly didn’t care.
They tore through the exoskeleton, clamping down on chunks of flesh and swallowing them whole.
Chomp, chomp–
Chomp, chomp–
Chomp, chomp–
The sounds were oddly appetizing, but… When the corpse was ripped open, a putrid, greenish fluid oozed out, spreading a nauseating stench.
Ugh…
Blegh…
Gag…
Lin Yu quickly turned away, dry heaving. Though nothing came up.
Watching the [Weak Ants] devour her mother’s body was even more grotesque than the bear feasting the other day.
But when she checked their status afterward, she was stunned.
They leveled up?! Why?!
