Chapter 228: The Battlefield
After receiving Lin Yu’s signal, Army Lady, Lvzi, and Stealth One leapt from the tree and charged into the battlefield.
Their initial targets were the Goblin Wizards casting offensive and enhancement spells from the rear of the goblin ranks.
Caught off guard by this flank assault from unexpected "human race" attackers, several Goblin Wizards shrieked as they fell beneath the trio’s blades.
"It’s them!"
A sharp-eyed adventurer spotted Army Lady’s group and cried out in exhilaration.
"They’re incredible… Their speed! Those cursed Goblin Wizards can’t even resist! Who are they?"
"You don’t recognize them?"
"I just returned to town before this damned siege began. How would I know? Who are they?"
"They’re recent additions to our Adventurer’s Guild."
"Newcomers?! Impossible…"
Yet despite his disbelief, the evidence unfolded before his eyes.
The trio’s intervention proved decisive—eliminating the Goblin Wizards not only bolstered the human race’s efforts but sowed chaos through the goblin ranks.
"Now’s our chance! Forward! Annihilate them!"
Revived by healing magic, Lit hefted his greatsword and plunged back into the fray.
His rallying cry ignited the soldiers, who roared as one and surged toward the enemy.
…
As the human forces drove the goblins into retreat,
Upon the city walls:
"It appears your intervention is unnecessary, Philid."
"Indeed, my lord."
The steward-clad youth stood with hands clasped, his gaze respectfully lowered.
"Though truthfully, even I couldn’t have outperformed those three women. Spell potency and precision diminish over distance."
"Hmm."
Simon nodded pensively before adding,
"Your earlier investigation into the two—no, three now—have you uncovered anything?"
"Fragments only."
Philid shook his head.
"Per the Adventurer’s Guild, Army Lady fled to our border town while pursued by enemies. The others are presumed former comrades from her adventuring days."
"Notably, she was first discovered by three youths she rescued from woodland peril."
"Oh?"
"An intriguing benevolence…"
After all, outside the town walls, frequent clashes between adventurers occurred, and betrayal from one’s own comrades was far from uncommon.
Simon gazed out at the battlefield beyond the town’s perimeter.
The goblins were in full retreat now, while soldiers and adventurers pursued them relentlessly – allowing these creatures to escape would endanger nearby village folk.
Counting this occasion, those women had rendered him significant aid twice already.
"Philid."
"Your command, milord?"
"Given their formidable prowess, what think you of inviting them into my Guard Knights?"
"Does milord covet their martial skills?"
"Indubitably."
Hmm… Though come to think of it, Lit had mentioned both the emerald-tressed maiden and golden-haired lass possessed uncommon beauty…
Perhaps instead of inducting them into the Guard Knights, claiming them as concubines might prove more… suitable. Heh.
"When the battle concludes, dispatch invitations for them to visit my estate. This evening… no, within coming days will suffice. Arrange suitable timing for our banquet."
"By your will, sire."
…
With the advanced goblins including Big Goblins slain, remaining common goblins numbered mere hundreds. Soldiers and adventurers formed dozens of squads for mop-up operations.
Army Lady, Lvzi, and Stealth One joined the pursuit briefly before diverting toward Granville Forest’s depths – more precisely, toward Foggy Castle’s direction.
Some time had passed since Lin Yu last laid eyes on her three ant-daughters, and she found herself missing their presence.
Though mental communication through shared consciousness allowed glimpses of their forms, such remote interactions lacked substance.
As for that reincarnator Luo Yong…
Lin Yu’s countenance darkened.
Nearly all three thousand raiding goblins lay dead, while forest stragglers faced imminent extermination by her ant colonies.
Not a single advanced goblin remained breathing.
With Darkling Stalker and Weak Sound both attaining high-tier Class B capabilities, disposing of that upstart should be well within their capacity.
Surprisingly, Darkling Stalker proved more compliant than anticipated… Unlike Purple Cloud and Purple Mist’s usual rebelliousness.
Come to think, how few daughters truly heed parental guidance these days?
…
Elsewhere, beneath forest canopies:
Darkling Stalker and Weak Sound wove through shadowed groves per Lin Yu’s commands.
Maintaining her Stealth skill’s shimmer, Darkling Stalker outpaced her companion, widening the gap while maintaining stoic silence.
Timid Weak Sound dared not initiate conversation – beyond Lvzi and Worker Liquor, she seldom interacted with sister-ants.
No words bridged their journey’s hush.
They halted only when colossal airborne ants appeared through leaf-breaks.
"You’ve arrived!"
Purple Mist spotted the pair. Commanding her Flying Ant squadron to hold position, she descended on buzzing wings.
"Um… S-situation?"
Weak Sound’s hesitant glance found Darkling Stalker still mute. When Purple Mist turned inquiring eyes, the timid ant averted her gaze entirely, shoulders hunching.
Purple Mist cocked her head at this display.
"He remains cave-bound," she indicated the distant cavern mouth. "Earlier, his roars shook trees – perhaps Mother eliminated his goblin forces?"
"Uncertain… Presumably…"
"Shall we assist your next move?"
"We…"
Weak Sound’s reply died as Darkling Stalker abruptly surged forward.
The gray ant dissolved into flickering shadows between tree trunks.
Before the cave sprawled the Goblin Tribe’s remnants – their numbers halved from three thousand to under two thousand after Army Lady’s wolf-allied assault.
Goblin Wizards lay extinct from lupine fury; barely a dozen Goblin Warriors remained.
Each slain follower weakened the Goblin King’s reincarnator attributes. Culling these dregs would simplify the final confrontation.
Darkling Stalker knew this calculus well. Her scything advance held no hesitation.
