Chapter 224: The Giant Wolf
Behind them echoed the goblins’ savage cries and the giant wolf’s agonized howls.
Grasping Army Lady’s hand, Stealth One navigated through the forest without pause until both pursuers vanished from sight.
The chaotic cacophony gradually coalesced into unified roars of fury.
Had the giant wolf managed to escape?
"I can walk unassisted."
As tension eased, Army Lady withdrew her hand from Stealth One’s grip with self-conscious abruptness.
"Mhm."
Stealth One spared her a brief glance but remained silent.
If their coordinated defense during the town’s night assault marked their initial collaboration, this encounter now counted as their second.
Though neither would voice it, their shared combat had dissolved the former hostility that once colored their exchanges – when their eyes now met, only wariness remained, devoid of past animosity.
After ten more minutes of travel, the two ant-warriors discerned a green-haired figure perched high on a gnarled trunk.
"You took your sweet time!"
The emerald-haired girl leapt gracefully to the forest floor.
They’d returned to yesterday’s makeshift camp, where an excavated burrow still lay beneath the tree roots.
"Where’s Stealth Two? What of the goblin situation?"
Lvzi bounded toward them with restless energy.
"They’re safe within our shadows," Army Lady replied before scrutinizing the green-haired girl. "Your ‘Undying’ skill activated properly?"
"Perfectly! Though stars above, that skull-crushing moment hurt like seven hells!" Lvzi buried her face in Army Lady’s bosom, nuzzling against the blonde’s armor. "Wuwu…"
"Such pain… You endured well."
Contrary to her usual brusqueness, Army Lady awkwardly patted the weeping girl’s back rather than delivering her customary thump.
"We identified the goblins’ vulnerability."
"Vulnerability?"
"Indeed."
Army Lady succinctly outlined their discovery.
"No wonder that flaxen-maned beast targeted the goblins first!" Lvzi’s tears vanished as she snapped her fingers. "It must’ve known their weakness!"
Her eyes suddenly widened. "Wait – could that wolf be our contracted prey from the ‘Giant Wolf Subjugation’ quest?"
"Now that you mention it…"
Army Lady and Stealth One exchanged a glance of sudden realization.
They should have made the connection earlier, but being consumed by relentless battles and frantic escapes had prevented them from linking the giant golden-furred wolf to the one described in their mission.
"That must be the case."
"Indeed, standing nearly three meters tall… We’ve never encountered a wolf monster of such magnitude before."
"So that wolf is our target… Do we confront it? Even though it just saved us."
Lvzi turned toward the pair.
"For now, let’s refrain," Stealth One shook her head. "Though its other traits resemble ours, its speed surpasses anything we could match. If it flees, catching it would be impossible."
"Besides," Army Lady added, "we might not withstand its strength."
"We should return immediately. Those Goblin Tribes might’ve already breached Granville Monster Forest. Our aid is needed there."
"Agreed. This seems our only path forward."
"Returning? Wonderful! We’ll get to see Mom again! Heheh… though that’s your true motive, isn’t it?" The green-haired girl prodded the others.
"And what about you?" Army Lady shot back. "Now release me—quit clinging like this!"
She struggled against Lvzi’s grip, yet despite her efforts, the sticky candy of a girl remained firmly attached.
As they tussled—
"Something approaches," Stealth One interjected sharply.
The pair froze, ears straining. The rustle of movement crept closer, accompanied by the metallic tang of blood.
"The goblin?"
"Impossible. We’ve covered too much ground for him to track us this swiftly."
All three tensed, eyes darting through the shadowed trees.
A gust stirred the leaves. By a distant trunk, the massive golden wolf reappeared—its flank marred by a forearm-length gash oozing crimson. Ignoring its wounds, it fixed the trio with a piercing stare, gaze inscrutable.
"It’s him."
"But how… how did he find us?"
After realizing it wasn’t the Goblin King, the three of them relaxed slightly but remained vigilant. Though unable to breach the Goblin King’s defenses, they felt confident they could penetrate the giant wolf’s protection. While the wolf moved swiftly, any attempt to attack would require close proximity – precisely when Lvzi could immobilize it with acid spray.
Their coordinated efforts stood a chance against this opponent. Both being reincarnators, this massive wolf appeared notably weaker than the Goblin King, though the comparison might shift considering the goblin forces’ heavy casualties.
"Wolf-type monsters possess keen olfaction," Stealth One remarked. "It likely tracked our scent."
"But why seek us out?" she questioned, brows furrowed.
"Hostility seems absent here."
"Indeed."
Army Lady inclined her head. Their extensive experience in Monster Forest honed their ability to discern monster intentions – whether hostile, fearful, threatening, attacking, or bluffing retreat. Yet this wolf’s demeanor suggested none of these… rather, curiosity? Stranger still, despite recent brutal goblin-inflicted injuries, the creature appeared almost cheerful.
"It’s approaching!"
The colossal canine began advancing with measured steps, its bushy tail swaying rhythmically – perhaps deliberately slow to demonstrate non-aggression.
"How should we respond?"
Though sensing no malice, tension gripped the trio.
"Should I deploy acid?"
Lvzi murmured, adding, "At three meters, I can drench it completely!"
"That’s vile…"
"Enough!"
"Focus," Stealth One interjected. "Let’s observe its intentions first."
"Regardless, it did rescue us."
"True," Lvzi countered, "but as fellow reincarnator, it’s technically our enemy. Slaying ninety-nine others to ascend as deity… Mother would consider this wolf adversarial."
During this exchange, the wolf closed within three meters. Lvzi withheld her acid, curiosity piqued. The beast circled them intently, enormous unblinking eyes scrutinizing their features before lowering its massive head to sniff.
Before reactions could form, the wolf abruptly recoiled. A visual blur shimmered before them – then the creature vanished completely.
