Chapter 205: Untitled
"Over two thousand common goblins, plus more than fifty Big Goblins and a dozen Goblin Warriors…"
Lit’s face darkened as the realization struck him.
"This is beyond our capacity to handle."
Goblins are notoriously vindictive monsters. They would surely regroup and return soon, making it unsafe to remain here any longer.
Lit promptly assembled all the soldiers and adventurers still present in Naner Village. After briefly relaying Army Lady and Lvzi’s findings, he ordered the soldiers and adventurers to assist the surviving village women in evacuating Naner Village.
However, complications arose during the process…
"Captain Lit…"
A soldier approached with a grim expression.
"What is it?"
"Some of the women… they’re going into labor."
"What?! Damn those cursed goblins!"
"The pain is unbearable for them—they can’t possibly move. What should we do, Captain?"
Lit forced himself to regain composure. The retreating goblins had likely already returned to their lair, and by now, an entire goblin horde might be advancing toward Naner Village.
What to do? Abandon them?
"How many are in labor?"
"Three."
"Very well. Leave one squad behind and take the others ahead. I’ll stay with the three women."
"But—"
"That’s an order. There’s no time to waste—move out now!"
"Yes, Captain!"
The soldier clenched his jaw before rushing off to relay the orders.
Soon, the group of roughly four hundred—soldiers, adventurers, and village women—swiftly gathered and departed Naner Village.
As for the remainder… aside from the small squad of soldiers…
"Aren’t you leaving with them?"
Lit turned to the handful of adventurers still present.
Only six remained, including Will and his two companions, who had just arrived.
"The last battle ended before we could contribute. Now’s our chance to make a difference!"
"Damn right! Those goblins need to pay!"
The three of them roared in fury.
"I came here for them."
The armored man beside them muttered in a low voice.
"Ha! Goblin Killer—I’ve heard of you. Truly, the name suits the man."
Lit clapped the man on the shoulder before turning to the three youths.
"As for you three, while your bravery is admirable, you should leave. You’re still just hot-blooded youngsters, after all."
"To be blunt, if the goblins catch up, it’ll be too late to flee. You’d only be throwing your lives away."
Lit’s tone was grave.
"But running without even trying would be so lame!"
"We’ve already made up our minds!"
The trio insisted stubbornly.
Lit’s expression hardened, but before he could retort—
"Not knowing your limits and charging blindly to your deaths is even lamer,"
the green-haired girl cut in.
"Besides, this old man’s right. You three would just be dead weight here. Why not head back to the town guild and report the situation? Leave this to the adults."
"Eh… Sister Army Lady, you think so too? Are we really just a burden?"
"Yes. And if a horde of goblins attacks, we won’t be able to protect you,"
Army Lady affirmed.
"Have you forgotten what happened in Granville Monster Forest?"
"Uh—"
The three froze, memories surfacing of their near-fatal encounter with the Granville Wolf in Granville Forest.
An involuntary shudder ran through them.
Though leaving still felt shameful, they ultimately obeyed and retreated from Naner Village.
"Truthfully, none of you three need to stay. While we’ve accepted the quest, such risks aren’t yours to bear."
"By that logic, shouldn’t you leave too?"
Lvzi countered.
"As legionnaire leader, you’re surely more vital to the town and lord than three village girls."
"In principle, yes, but—well, touché!"
Lit blinked, then roared with laughter.
This Lvzi girl—he liked her more by the minute.
"But *because* I’m the legionnaire leader, I can’t let you adventurers show me up."
Just then, a soldier arrived with a report.
The three village women had gone into labor.
Even standing at the village entrance, their agonized screams were clearly audible.
Lit’s expression darkened immediately.
Without a word, he quickened his pace toward the source of the screams with his soldiers. After exchanging glances, Lvzi and Army Lady followed suit.
About half an hour later, the screams finally subsided.
"Stop the bleeding now!"
"At once, Captain!"
The soldiers hastily administered Hemostatic Powder to the three mothers as emergency treatment.
The others watched with grim expressions as the dozen-odd green-skinned monsters squirmed and crawled despite having just been born.
The goblins birthed by human women appeared no different from those born of female goblins.
Army Lady and Lvzi studied the horrified reactions of the humans around them while mentally comparing these newborns to the goblin young they’d seen before, their own faces twisting in disgust.
"What’s your order, Captain?"
"Isn’t it obvious?"
Lit drew his side dagger, but just as he moved to strike –
A woman’s guttural cry stayed his hand.
One of the three villagers shoved aside an assisting soldier and, though weakened from childbirth, came scrambling forward with desperate strength.
She snatched the dagger from Lit’s grip and plunged it with manic fury into a newborn goblin’s belly.
"Gyaaa!!"
The creature’s piercing shriek filled the air.
"Heh…heh… Die… Die…"
The infant goblin’s cries did nothing to deter the woman. Again and again she stabbed, each thrust spraying more blood across her hands and face until –
The tiny goblin’s protests faded into silence, yet still the woman kept stabbing.
Only when her strength finally failed did the bloodied dagger slip from her fingers.
Lit caught the falling weapon while steadying the collapsing woman, passing her to a stunned soldier.
"We’ll handle the rest,"
he said, eyes flashing dangerously.
"Slaughter these vermin! The rest of you – prepare horses to evacuate these three!"
A series of grotesque squeals followed as the newborn goblins were dispatched.
But birthing goblins proved far deadlier than normal childbirth.
Of the three women, only the dagger-wielding mother survived – the other two had already bled out.
Just as Lit was cursing through clenched teeth and the group prepared to depart with the surviving woman –
A distant chorus of goblin shrieks erupted, so numerous it set everyone’s hair on end.
The goblin horde had arrived.
