Chapter 161: Entering the City
After instructing Army Lady to stow her bow and arrows, Lin Yu resumed control of her body.
Without a glance at the two trembling adventurers, the goat-bearded merchant, or the bald strongman beside them, Lin Yu grasped her longsword and returned to the ox-drawn cart.
"Let’s proceed."
"Oh, right!"
Mayer supported the more severely injured Will as the trio of youths, somewhat dazed, followed Lin Yu onto the cart, which then rejoined the procession ahead.
"Sister Army Lady is incredible…"
"She single-handedly defeated the renowned Wings of Freedom Squad…"
"Are you truly a Class C adventurer?"
"Indeed."
Her strength and speed are maintained at Class C levels, so Class C she remains!
Lin Yu nodded in affirmation.
Approximately half an hour later, as the last glimmer of daylight lingered on the horizon, the cart finally approached the town’s gates.
"What’s in the cart?"
A gate guard approached.
"Agricultural produce, sir."
Nyx responded promptly.
"Let me inspect it."
"Certainly."
As the guard circled the cart to the rear, he noticed the four occupants inside.
He was momentarily captivated by the golden-haired girl’s appearance, but upon seeing the light armor she wore, he quickly regained his composure.
"Are you all adventurers?"
"Three of us are; Sister Army Lady is not yet."
Sally, the girl, answered.
"Alright, step down first."
The four complied, disembarking from the cart, and the guard directed another guard.
"Verify their Adventurer IDs and identity cards, and collect the entry fee."
He then ascended the cart to examine the sacks of agricultural goods.
Meanwhile, the three youths retrieved their Adventurer IDs from their persons and presented them to the guard for inspection.
They were E-class adventurers, their IDs resembling small cards, crafted from gray metal engraved with serial numbers and unique patterns.
It’s said that the material of the Adventurer ID varies with the Adventurer Level.
As for the driver, Nister, he respectfully handed the guard a larger, semi-transparent white card with both hands. The guard accepted it and proceeded to a small building adjacent to the city gate.
After a short while, he emerged and handed the card back to Nister.
"Pay up, the entry fee is two small silver coins, and—hey! Are you done yet?"
The guard suddenly called out to another guard inside the carriage.
"All set!"
The guard inside the carriage jumped down.
"It’s all crops; the goods aren’t worth much. Just pay three small silver coins."
"Ah, thank you, thank you, sir."
Bringing goods into the city requires an additional entry fee, which varies depending on the quantity and value of the goods. Generally, crops incur a relatively lower charge.
Nister handed over a total of five small silver coins to the guard.
"And your entry fee, little lady."
The guard joked, his tone and gaze not as irritating as the previous Sylvestre’s.
"Wait, wait a moment."
The three youngsters searched their pockets and finally gathered seven small silver coins and thirty copper coins, handing them all to the guard.
So, you’re really this poor…
Seemingly noticing Lin Yu’s gaze, Will scratched his head awkwardly.
"I had saved some money, but after buying those two light leather armors and Sally’s magic wand, there wasn’t much left."
"And the armor is broken now…"
Mayer also sighed.
"Don’t look so down! We’ve defeated many monsters along the way with Sister Army Lady. If we sell them, we’ll have money again!"
"That’s true!"
The three of them cheered up again.
After paying the entry fee, it was almost dark, and the four of them got back on the ox cart and finally entered the town.
Once they passed through the city gate, the view opened up.
Behind the city gate was a square with stone pavement, bustling with carriages and people.
Most of the buildings in the town were one or two stories tall, with a few three-story buildings here and there, though they were less common.
"Sister Army Lady, shall we head to the Adventurer’s Guild first?"
"Hmm."
Lin Yu nodded.
"Hahaha, then let’s part ways. I need to find an inn to rest, and I’ll head to the market tomorrow."
"Goodbye, Uncle Nister."
After Nister waved to the four of them, he drove the cart down a road.
"Then let’s go."
So Lin Yu followed the three young people to a broad road on the other side, where she noticed several stalls selling a variety of fruits, vegetables, and even snacks.
Although the vendors were enthusiastically calling out to passersby, and some of the food looked quite appetizing, Lin Yu currently had no money, so she had no choice but to resist the temptation for now.
In addition to these food stalls, she also spotted a clothing store along the roadside!
The clothes inside didn’t appear particularly elegant, but they were certainly better than the coarse fabric dress that Army Lady was currently wearing.
Moreover, the fabric seemed to be of decent quality…
Hmm, she decided to make a mental note of this shop for future reference.
"Oh! Quick, look! It seems Nick’s store has stocked up on new gear again!"
Mayer’s voice drew Lin Yu’s attention away from the clothing store.
Following the gazes of the two boys, she saw an Armor Store, reminiscent of those found in typical RPG games, with a wooden sign featuring a simple armor icon.
Peering through the shop door, she could see various types of armor displayed on the shelves inside.
Lin Yu glanced down at the silver light armor she was wearing; although it was of decent quality, it was already marred with numerous scratches.
Perhaps later she could take it to the Armor Store to see if those scratches could be repaired, or maybe even purchase a new set of armor?
"Alright, alright, no more looking. We need to head to the guild first."
Sally tugged at the two boys as they moved forward, while Lin Yu, looking around curiously, followed behind the trio.
Army Lady’s striking beauty and commanding presence attracted the attention of many passersby along the way, and at one point, a young man even mustered the courage to approach her.
Being approached took Lin Yu by surprise, reminding her of her popularity in her past life.
However, before she could decline, the three young companions, including Sally, promptly shooed the young man away.
They continued walking for a while longer.
"Ah, it’s Miss Nachi’s wand shop! I can’t believe it’s still open this late."
This time, it was Sally who came to a halt.
"Sally, the wand in your hand is brand new…"
"I know! I’m just looking… there’s no harm in looking…"
This time, it was the two boys who pulled the girl along.
Unfortunately, they did not come across any Apothecary selling magic potions along the way.
It seemed that all the Apothecaries in town were located on a different street.
About half an hour later, a tall three-story building came into view before Lin Yu. On the wooden sign above the main door, the words of this world were carved – Adventurer’s Guild.
