Chapter 95: The Grand Consultation
At dusk, a horse-drawn carriage slowly entered the back courtyard of the Yeni cathedral.
The atmosphere was different from usual. All the nuns were standing in the courtyard, their eyes fixed on the carriage, without a single whisper among them, which was quite unusual.
In the centre of the courtyard, Chaoyang was waiting with Jeanne, and two elderly ladies. Originally, Jeanne had only started out as the head of the medical team, but since she’d made the deal with the Paradise, she was now considered as the leader by the Lost Sisters. The other two ladies were former priestesses of the Goddess of Charity and the God of Knowledge, who also served as the actual administrators of the cathedral.
Now, all of them were eagerly waiting for a miracle to happen. And the miracle that the sisters had been talking about so much over the past few days was right there, in that very carriage.
After the carriage had come to a stop, Asahara Naruko jumped down from the driver’s seat and lifted the linen cloth covering the cargo.
When the cloth was removed, inside the carriage, neat rows of rectangular cardboard boxes appeared in front of everyone’s eyes. On each box, there was an inked emblem in the shape of a door.
It was obviously the logo of the “Destiny Gate”.
Naruko was the one who came up with this idea. She believed that the company’s purpose wasn’t just to supply medicine to the cathedral, but to create products for the entire world. It was therefore important to establish a brand name early on, with the aim of capturing people’s hearts and minds in the shortest possible time.
Undoubtedly, these people knew their way around business.
Chaoyang nodded to Jeanne, who took two deep breaths before approaching the carriage. She personally lifted out one of the box, opened it on the spot and took out a glass bottle from inside.
The bottles didn’t contain much medicine, barely covering the bottom of the bottle. But as each bottle held only a small amount, they were able to fill a whole carriage with them.
As Jeanne lifted up the bottle, all the nuns uniformly focused their gaze on the milky white powder inside.
“Mr. Chao,” one of the older nuns said slowly, “could you tell us more about this medicine of yours?”
“This is a natural substance found in many types of mould,” Chaoyang continued his explanation. “ It can effectively fight against micro-organisms, those invisible entities Mr. Zhang mentioned earlier,” he didn’t want to make the drug presentation too fancy, so he kept his explanation simple and straightforward.
“Once diluted, these substances can destroy microbes without harming the body, thereby preventing the occurrence of scarlet curses. Of course… I’ve noticed that you have lumped all infectious diseases under the term ‘Scarlet Curse,’ which is not entirely accurate. Therefore, I cannot guarantee that it will be effective against all curses. However, I believe that with the continued development of other drugs, most diseases will eventually have appropriate and comprehensive treatments! This is also the future goal of our Destiny Gate!”
The nuns spontaneously burst into applause when they heard Chaoyang’s speech and future goal.
“His Excellency the Divine Messenger always makes even the seemingly impossible sound like everyday occurrences,” Zhu Di grumbled as she quickly jotted down notes. “If the Divine Machine Church could provide a cure for the Scarlet Curse, I fear that Central Avenue would be draped with their banners from end to end.”
“But our reports should stick to the facts,” Dunn whispered as a reminder. “After all, this drug has yet to be tested in field. We must wait until tomorrow morning for the final results.”
“Right, of course,” Zhu Di agreed. “But why have you taken out your camera now?” She looked at her partner. “Even the film for the photo caption is labelled ‘The Birth of a Miracle Drug’?”
“You went through my film pack?” Dunn couldn’t help but ask in a surprise tone.
Defensively, Zhu Di replied, “If I don’t keep a close eye on you, who knows if you’ll sneak off to investigate again like last time and end up falling right in the hands of the criminals.”
“Thank you,” Dunn said suddenly, sounding serious. “Although I’ve said it before, I’ll always remember what you did for me.”
“Eh… there’s no need to remember it for too long…” Zhu Di couldn’t help but look away.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Chaoyang took out another syringe. It was made of a glass barrel, a glass plunger, and a stainless steel needle. Since there were no large glass factories in Glorious Fortress, these glass components were made individually by skilled artisans. Currently, only about thirty such syringes have been produced. “Earlier, Miss Jeanne organised needle injection training sessions, which were actually rehearsals for this batch of medicine. If any of you have participated in those exercises, please raise your hand so that I can see how many have learned the technique.”
Immediately, over fifty hands shot up in the crowd.
Wow… That’s a lot of people, Chaoyang thought to himself.
“Everyone was very enthusiastic,” Jenny said with satisfaction. “Almost everyone signed up as soon as they heard it was your request. If we had more testing equipment, I’m sure even more could have learned how to do it.”
“It’s not just the young ones,” the old nun chimed in from behind them. “Even some of us older ones tried their hand at it. Although this treatment method is unprecedented, it’s surprisingly easy to learn. All you have to do is find a vein and insert the needle. After practicing on a few cadavers, I got the hang of it pretty quickly.”
That’s because corpses don’t cry out in pain, nor do they react when you miss the needle and reinsert it, Chaoyang thought, smiling politely. It wasn’t difficult to give injections, but it was difficult to do it quickly and accurately so that the patients didn’t suffer.
But then again, given the skills of local craftsmen, the needles produced were inevitably a little thick, with inconsistent inner diameters. They were barely usable, making it difficult to ensure that patients felt no pain during the procedure.
All he could say was that he was glad it wasn’t him who was stuck with those needles. The patients were close to death’s door anyway. Surely they wouldn’t mind a little extra pain, would they?
“Great! Now that we have all the medicine and equipment ready, let’s officially start it!” Chaoyang clapped enthusiastically.
By 7 p.m., every corner of the main hall of Yeni cathedral had been thoroughly cleaned. The beds had also been rearranged, with only twelve wooden beds placed in the center.
The patients lying on these beds were all suffering from the Scarlet Curse. The ‘boiling water treatment’ had alleviated some of the symptoms, but others continued to get worse. Of particular concern were the the four most severe cases; their wounds had become severely infected, as evidenced by prominent red patches on their skin, and they were suffering from persistent high fevers.
Based on past experience, these individuals were essentially declared dead. Usually, the nuns would move them to adjoining rooms to await death and to prevent the curse from spreading further.
“Are you all ready?” asked Jeanne, now wearing a white lab coat.
At first she was puzzled as to why Chaoyang had prepared special white coats for the nuns. But now that she saw her fellow nuns, she suddenly understood the significance of the white coats, masks, and caps. The black robes of nuns could easily hide dirt, but with these new garments, any contamination would be immediately apparent .
The other twenty-three chosen nuns nodded in unison.
“Let us begin,” she instructed.
For Jeanne, too, this was a nerve-wracking first attempt. According to the medicine’s instructions, they had to prepare the injection solution just before use, and any unused portion after administration could not be used again and had to be discarded. Given the importance and rarity of these antibiotics, her hands trembled slightly as she inserted the syringe into the prepared liquid.
Soon, a small amount of the drug filled the syringe.
“Next is the skin test.”
Jeanne lifted her head and glanced at Mr. Zhang, who was watching her nearby. Her nervousness seemed to ease a little.
Yes… Not only Lord Chao is here, but also Mr. Zhang. If anything goes wrong, they will surely step in to fix it.
She nodded towards the assistant nun who was responsible for holding the patient’s right hand steady. Then, she gently pierced the skin with the needle at an angle before quickly pushing down the plunger of the syringe.
The patient immediately let out a faint cry of pain!
The others patients weren’t much better off, the sharp sting of the needle making them all scream loudly.
“He’s bleeding!”
“You went too deep! Try again in another vein!”
“What are you doing?!” Suddenly, one patient’s blindfold slipped off. He was horrified to see the nun injecting something he had never seen before into his hand. Unable to contain his panic, he began to struggle wildly. “Let me go, please! I don’t want this treatment anymore! It hurts so much!”
Fortunately, the church was prepared for this. All the patients were tied firmly to their beds with ropes, so his struggles didn’t cause much trouble for the nuns. Besides, these crazy screams happened every night. In addition, the other patients just groaned a little, and none of them joined in on the struggle.
“Let me handle this.” Jeanne walked over to the man and slapped him hard on the back of the head! The patient immediately fainted and fell back into silence.
