Chapter 39: Forced Role-play
“Lord Chao, the bag is ready,” Dunn’s voice echoed from outside the door.
At that moment, Chaoyang slowly released his grip. It wasn’t out of mercy or a desire to let her suffocate on her own; rather, amidst flickering memory fragments, he detected an unusual emotion, distinctly incongruous with the rest. It felt like a faint reflection concealed beneath the light. Although Chaoyang couldn’t be entirely certain of its origin, it was not difficult to make some educated guesses.
Upon noticing this vulnerability, a new idea unconsciously began to take shape in his mind!
That idea involved controlling Luo Di and making her serve the demon!
This concept seemed quite far-fetched, but upon closer consideration, one could realize there was no fundamental conflict between angels and demons. If successful, the benefits to Chaoyang would undoubtedly be immense.
His most frequent complaint had always been about his limited combat capabilities. Wouldn’t securing an angel as a bodyguard give him a significant advantage? With the constraints of a contract, demons wouldn’t need to fear “betrayal.” The only challenge lies in convincing the other party to willingly sign such a pact. Once the contract is established, Luo Di would naturally pose no further threat.
Apart from this primary reason, Chaoyang also aimed to extract more information about the “Nemesis” from her.
Had he been in one of Earth’s cities instead of another world… the outcome might have been entirely different.
The Dreamwalking technique was not suitable for detailed questioning; to learn about angels, he needed to coax the information directly from her mouth.
“No need for the bag yet. Do you have any spare beds? Please make room for one.” Chaoyang lifted Luo Di again, opened the door, and found a surprised Dunn waiting outside.
“Yes, we do… What are your intentions?”
“To heal this Demon,” Chaoyang improvised casually.
“You… wish to treat a Demon?”
“She hasn’t fully succumbed to possession; there might still be hope.” Chaoyang smiled reassuringly. “God desires Paradise to reject no one, even demons should have a chance at redemption.”
Dunn’s expression subtly shifted.
His previously tense lips relaxed significantly—it was evident that he harbored doubts and concerns about eliminating a Demon who appeared identical to a human girl. Now… his worries seemed alleviated, as if a weight had been lifted from his heart.
Dunn silently expressed his agreement with this approach.
This overly keen insight… Chaoyang helplessly shook his head. As he became increasingly familiar with demonic abilities, he now felt as if he could communicate with people without even speaking.
“Of course, please follow me!” Dunn turned to lead the way.
Just then, Chaoyang sensed another faint pulse of Wish Power again!
‘What’s happening?’
Clearly at the moment, there were no contracts on hand.
Could it be… related to the pure white filament on the journalist?
Using Demon Vision, Chaoyang examined the reporter and noticed that the white thread still persisted, showing no changes compared to before.
“Your Excellency?” Dunn looked back at him.
“It’s nothing, let’s continue,” Chaoyang responded, regaining his composure.
The entire ordeal stretched from afternoon to evening.
Chaoyang couldn’t trust leaving Luo Di under the care of two ordinary individuals, so he constantly watched over her in the room. It wasn’t until the sky was awash with red twilight hues that she began showing signs of awakening.
“Your Excellency, she’s waking up.” Zhu Di was the first to notice.
Chaoyang nodded and walked to the bedside—unnoticed by the others, he created another duplicate while his true form moved away from the bedroom. Although this wasted Wish Power, for safety’s sake, it was better not to skimp on such precautions. “Please step back a bit, just in case the Demon suddenly becomes violent.”
Dunn and Zhu Di obediently retreated to the door.
“That… I’ve been wanting to ask you,” Zhu Di cautiously said, “how exactly can one rescue a possessed individual? You mentioned she isn’t truly human, so would exorcism techniques be ineffective?”
“Correct, only divine power can restrain Demons,” Chaoyang replied calmly. “Honestly, this is my first attempt, so I’m uncertain about the success rate. We’ll do our best.”
“You… good luck.”
“Ugh…” The girl let out a pained groan and slowly opened her eyes. A clear sense of disorientation filled those azure pupils, indicating she had yet to recover from extreme weakness.
“You’ve slept quite long,” Chaoyang leaned down and said.
“This place is…” She squinted for a moment before her expression abruptly changed. “You’re the demon!”
As she spoke, she tried to sit up but realized her hands and feet were tied with ropes to the bed frame.
A hint of fear flashed across Luo Di’s face.
This subtle change did not escape Chaoyang’s notice.
“Abomination, show respect to Lord Chao!” Zhu Di exclaimed, stepping forward.
“D-demon?” Luo Di turned in astonishment, only then noticing the two others in the room. With a quick glance, it was evident to her that both were ordinary humans.
Seeing her eyes sweep towards them, Zhu Di hastily hid behind Dunn again.
“You… haven’t signed contracts yet,” Luo Di managed weakly, “Leave immediately! Do not believe anything this man says! As long as you don’t sign, there’s still hope…”
“They have already signed,” Chaoyang interjected coldly. “To be more precise, the contracts have been completed, so you cannot perceive any traces.”
He sensed faintly that angels might possess unique perception, allowing them to track demons’ presence, including the ability to see through fabricated illusions.
Luo Di clearly didn’t believe him. “Hmph, is this just another trick of yours? If they had completed the contracts, I fear you would already be playing with their souls!”
Chaoyang nonchalantly shrugged, knowing there was no need for him to respond.
As expected, Zhu Di immediately defended him, “Lord Chao isn’t deceiving you; he indeed signed a contract with me, and it was flawlessly fulfilled! Although I’m not sure what you mean by ‘souls,’ it sounds like a lie!”
Luo Di opened her mouth but fell momentarily speechless.
A hint of amusement flickered within Chaoyang’s thoughts. Leaving these two behind served precisely this purpose. “Your name is Luo Di, correct?”
“How do you know my name?” The question caught her off guard again.
“So you’re unaware even of Dreamwalking? How then can you confidently assert that contracts steal human souls?” Chaoyang asked mildly. “Of course… Dreamwalking itself has no harmful intent. Without the knowledge I planted through dreams, we wouldn’t have understood each other at all.”
“I—” Luo Di abruptly closed her mouth.
It dawned on her only now that the language she had been speaking moments ago wasn’t any from Earth.
“You haven’t answered my question yet, Demon!” Chaoyang suddenly raised his voice, shifting from his previous calm tone to a stern interrogation. “Have you encountered someone like me before? And if not, what basis do you have to accuse a stranger of demanding others’ souls?”
It seemed as though Luo Di had never been asked such a question before. After a momentary pause, she began to argue, “But you—”
Chaoyang swiftly grabbed a handful of flour, which he asked to prepare beforehand, and threw it onto Luo Di’s face. “Exorcise!”
“Cough… cough…” Luo Di inadvertently inhaled some flour, triggering a violent bout of coughing.
“Answer me!”
“Because of awakening—”
Chaoyang tossed another handful of flour!
“Don’t try to evade with irrelevant talk. Answer my question: Have you encountered anyone like me before?”
“I…”
“Exorcise!”
“Cough… uh, cough-cough-cough—” Luo Di curled over, wracked by coughs.
“So this is Paradise’s exorcism ritual? It’s truly astonishing…” Dunn pulled out a notebook from his pocket, “Please allow me to record this.”
After several rounds, fine powder covered the girl’s hair and cheeks, leaving her voice weak amidst continuous coughing.
“I… will speak…”
Chaoyang reached into the flour bag once more. “Exorcise!”
“Lord Chao, I believe she was trying to say something,” Zhu Di gently reminded him.
Chaoyang’s hand paused.
With an expression close to tears, Luo Di caught her breath and spoke haltingly, “I haven’t encountered anyone like you before… cough… Is that enough for you?!”
Dunn and Zhu Di exchanged glances, both thinking the same thing: The demon has yielded.
