Chapter 38: Angel
“Mister… what just happened?” the coachman’s astonished voice echoed from up front. “Are you still in a rush to leave?”
Chaoyang, observing the unconscious figure before him, was momentarily puzzled but didn’t lose sight of the most critical matter at hand. “What did you see happen here?”
“Uh… a girl ran out of the house and then jumped onto the carriage…” the coachman replied honestly. “But she jumped so far, almost like a cheetah.”
Immediately realizing that the coachman couldn’t perceive the storm-like energy waves or the dazzling sword glow, Chaoyang understood this power could only be sensed by himself… or perhaps it resembled Wish Power, requiring Spiritual Eye’s Vision to be visible.
This realization brought slight relief to Chaoyang.
“continue waiting here,” he said, lifting the woman over his shoulder and stepping down from the carriage.
“Oh… oh, alright,” the coachman responded, somewhat bewildered.
At that moment, Dunn and Zhu Di rushed out as well. “Lord Chao, just now, you…”
“Let’s discuss inside.” With a composed lift of his hat brim, Chaoyang strode back into the house under their watchful eyes, the unconscious woman still on his shoulder.
Once inside, Chaoyang noticed that the furnishings in the entrance hall and corridors remained unchanged. It seemed the storm-like impact caused by the assailant had minimal effect on physical objects—the intensity was purely spiritual.
He chose a room at random and tossed the woman onto the floor.
“Your Excellency, this person is…”
“A Demon,” Chaoyang declared firmly.
“Ah! A Demon?” Zhu Di covered her mouth in surprise but couldn’t help stealing more glances at the figure. “She looks so young… just like a human, except for those peculiar clothes.”
“That’s typical. Before revealing their true nature, Demons often appear as humans.”
“It sounds somewhat different from heretics…” Zhu Di pondered, “Are you suggesting she isn’t truly human?”
“Certainly not, otherwise how could she suddenly materialize in this house?” Chaoyang responded calmly, “Not all forces wish to see Paradise prosper, as my Lord’s presence inherently poses a threat to them.”
“I understand now,” Zhu Di empathized immediately. “Some individuals simply enjoy witnessing others’ suffering…”
“That’s why she attacked you,” Dunn mused. “Fortunately, you were well-prepared and swiftly evaded outside with just a blink of an eye. Such agility is not possessed by ordinary individuals. Your Excellency is truly no ordinary detective.”
“Of course! Lord Chao is indeed a Divine messenger!” Zhu Di’s admiration grew even stronger in her eyes.
Chaoyang knew well that the reality was different; his decoy had been instantly destroyed, and from the start, the attacker targeted his true form. To onlookers, it appeared as if he had teleported onto the carriage. Thankfully, his ability to change appearances allowed him to maintain the detective guise until boarding the carriage, ensuring no one suspected anything unusual.
Ultimately, his constant vigilance saved his life once again.
“Mister Dunn, please prepare a large black cloth bag, big enough to hold her and ideally waterproof,” Chaoyang said slowly.
“I’ll fetch it right away.”
The journalist seemed to anticipate what would happen next. He took Zhu Di’s hand, led her out of the room, and casually closed the door behind them.
After confirming they were far enough, Chaoyang extended his right hand and placed it gently on the woman’s neck.
Her skin felt incredibly delicate, devoid of its initial unyielding strength. It seemed as if with just a slight twist from him, he could effortlessly crush her throat and spine.
This individual posed a significant threat, warranting his personal intervention.
However, before acting, Chaoyang wanted to understand who she was and how she managed to open a passage without accepting his invitation, daring to intrude alone into the other world.
While maintaining a grip on her vulnerable points, he infiltrated her mind with his consciousness.
This innate demonic ability is known as the Dreamwalking technique.
Apart from those who signed contracts allowing direct mental communication with Chaoyang, he could also use this Dreamwalking technique to actively read information from others. For instance, during their first game, he had guided Shi Dong to the Divination House using this very method. However, this ability has clear limitations—it cannot facilitate dialogue, nor can it be used while the subject is awake. The amount of information obtained depends on the sleeping person’s willpower and the complexity of their thoughts. Simply put, individuals who are straightforward or anxious are easier to extract information from, whereas calm and composed minds prove difficult to breach.
Quickly, Chaoyang felt himself immersing in the woman’s consciousness.
It was akin to a grassy plain bathed in harmonious sunlight, so flat that one could almost see its end at a glance. The gentle rustle of wind through leaf tips filled his ears, and he could even detect the unique faint aroma of fresh grass.
Chaoyang himself was taken aback; this was his first encounter with such a wondrous mental landscape, as if she had no dark corners fearing exposure.
Is this person… truly human?
He soon received an answer—yes, but not entirely.
Her name was Luo Di Capet, and just like him, she was an ‘unlucky soul’ awakened with special abilities, yet her direction was completely opposite from his.
She referred to herself as an angel.
In the past, Chaoyang would have scoffed at such a claim, but now he couldn’t bring himself to laugh—not when demons already existed. What’s so strange about having an angel as well? Moreover, this explained how she could dispel illusions, bypass the invitation, directly intrude upon the channel he created, and effortlessly pinpoint his true form.
It seemed their powers were inherently counterbalanced.
Unexpectedly, after becoming a demon, he hadn’t encountered any fellow kindred spirits; instead, his first visitor turned out to be a sworn adversary in every sense of the word.
Furthermore, he discovered that she genuinely embodied goodness.
Just how good was she? She was good to the point that she spent nearly her entire life tirelessly helping others. She had awakened much earlier than Chaoyang, at least seven or eight years prior, by his estimate. Even before her awakening, it seemed she had already embraced the joy of assisting people. Acts like returning lost money and helping grandmothers cross the street were commonplace for her. After her awakening, she took these benevolent deeds to new heights, leaving Chaoyang utterly astounded by the breadth of her experiences.
Indeed, she volunteered as a charity worker, donated to disaster victims, participated in multiple environmental organizations and animal welfare associations. She marched on French streets, protesting against monopolistic corporations, and even spent time in slums solely to aid destitute unemployed individuals.
It’s hard to imagine all this accomplished by a sixteen-year-old girl.
Although the memories were fragmented and hazy, lacking clear details, their overall direction was unmistakable. Memories are difficult to fake, after all, as they require personal experiences to shape them. Chaoyang could sense that Luo Di didn’t engage in these acts for any external pursuit but simply because she genuinely enjoyed doing so.
This realization left Chaoyang speechless.
He finally understood what it felt like to encounter someone so virtuous it made him nauseous.
As for why Luo Di suddenly collapsed mid-leap and fell unconscious, Chaoyang had largely deduced the reason. He didn’t know how angels sustain themselves, but it must be fundamentally opposed to demons. Given that demons have withered significantly, angels likely haven’t fared much better either. She probably didn’t anticipate being outside her original world; finding this realm through the channel had already drained her excessively. With her presence discovered, she had no choice but to make a desperate attempt. In such a weakened state, forcefully using her innate abilities would disrupt the energy balance, instantly plunging her into depletion.
In other words, even if he did nothing, Luo Di wouldn’t have much time left.
She would die while remaining unconscious.
