Chapter 114: Mysterious Memories
It took Chaoyang less than ten minutes to locate the living quarters of the person with the vigorous vitality.
The cabin was tiny, nothing but a few beds filled the small space.
Lovisia lay on one of the beds, but to Chaoyang’s surprise, she was secured with chains. Had it not been for her bed being noticeably larger than the others and layered with several blankets underneath , he might have suspected that there was internal strife within the Brotherhood.
“What is this, some kind of measure against sleepwalking?” Chaoyang muttered as scanned the room, confirming nothing was amiss before turning his focus on the target. “Are you certain it’s her?”
“The vitality signature matches. What’s the problem?”
“She is a woman,” he replied. Although she had spoken in the Cathedral, with her face covered with a mask, her voice had sounded remarkably androgynous, so he hadn’t given it another thought.
“So what? Do you fussing over whether she’s male or female? Even if they are intersex, their Wish Power would still be the same.”
Chaoyang rolled his eyes silently Sometimes, he even thought that he himself ought to be called an angel instead. “…We still don’t know how much Wish Power she possesses,” Chaoyang remarked still doubtful.
Then you need to entice her more skillfully, draw her desires out from the bottom of her heart. I believe in you, go for it!” Luo Di urged in an almost careless tone.
With a sigh, Chaoyang sat down by her bed and gently placed his hand on her forehead.
In an instant, it felt as if he had been plunged into a tempest. He felt like chaotic currents were surging upward from below, violently thrusting him outward. Amidst this maelstrom, he could only faintly glimpse at fragments of memory—
“A mine whose walls bore vivid, jade‑green trunks…”
“Miners brandishing weapons as they fought their way through the security team’s encirclement…”
“And a familiar woman, smiling warmly at her…”
Then, abruptly, his consciousness was violently thrown back!
“Are you done so fast?” Lui Di exclaimed, clearly taken aback.
“This is troublesome,” Chaoyang said, shaking his head. “This woman’s mental defense are exceptionally strong, and she possesses an immense innate power. The Dreamwalking technique can’t probe her memories so easily.”
“So, you’re saying you can’t do it?”
Momentarily at a loss, Chaoyang couldn’t tell whether Luo Di’s words were offhand or if there was a hidden meaning behind them. “Hold on a sec, okay?” he replied. “It was just a brief glimpse, but I saw someone I recognize… That woman’s connections might be even closer than we imagined .”
“Indeed, he had only met the woman once, but her image was etched in his mind with stark clarity—after all, his first bucket of Wish Power in this world had come directly from her.
Her name was Haiya Mira, a member of the Nepheids Clan.
Luo Di had also browsed through the memories of the second game and at Chaoyang’s hint, she immediately recalled, “Could this woman be the sister that Haiya mentioned?”
“Other than a real sister, who else would smile at her in that way? It couldn’t possibly be a close friend, right?”
“Your theory is a bit of a stretch, but fine, I’ll play along,” Luo Di replied.
“Alright, then I’ll search for more evidence…” Chaoyang said, somewhat resigned. After all, information was crucial while guiding the Dreamwalking Technique. The more authentic and emotional the memories, the deeper they would resonate with the person being guided. If Haiya wasn’t truly her sister and he implanted memories based on feelings of familial bonds, then upon waking up, she would only feel immense discomfort—as if she had experienced an absurd dream.
With no other options, he decided to cast Dreamwalking Technique on Lovisia as well. Since they were both members of the Brotherhood, perhaps their combined memories could provide some corroborating pieces.
This time, Chaoyang’s entry into her dream went remarkably smoothly. Her subconscious offered little resistance, allowing him to effortlessly reach the maze of memories. However, the memory blocks forming the labyrinth appeared barren and dilapidated, entangled with gnarled vines.
Such a desolate scene seemed utterly incongruous with her young age.
The first scene that greeted him was once again from the depths of a mine—
“Aah!—Just kill me! It hurts so much—!”
Shrill, agonized screams echoed in succession, as if this were not a mine at all but an execution ground for tortured prisoners. A chill ran down Chaoyang’s spine as he witnessed a scene indistinguishable from a horrific execution. Many miners were bound to wooden frames, and behind them stood numerous figures which resembled as some kind of overseers. Their hands, however were not brandishing whips but wielded sharp, flesh-shredding knives.”
They efficiently located the spot on the miners where small, thin arms were sprouting from the miners’ bodies. And one by one, the overseers were slicing these hands off, as if peeling potatoes. Yet, It was clear, however, that these weren’t foreign growths. Each cut elicited a piercing, anguished cry from the miner, and blood gushed out from the wounds, sending a chill down the viewer’s heart.
Once the arms detached, then the overseers would plunge their knives into the flesh and slice around, over and over again to carve a circular cut. Repeating this grim ritual, some miners’ backs had become riddled with bloody holes, short of like a meteorite impacted crater.
At that moment, one of the miner fell silent. The overseer behind him pressed a hand to the miner’s neck, shook their head, and declared, “Useless piece of trash. He’s dead. Swap him out with another one.”
Suddenly, the scene began to shake violently, inching ever closer to the wooden frame. In that instant, Chaoyang realized with a jolt—now it was Lovisia’s turn!
He hastily leaped to the next memory block. This method of observation was too easy to induce a sense of empathy in him which he couldn’t afford, and he didn’t want to leave any indelible shadows in his mind.
The subsequent scene was also deep within the mine, but it was clearly in a different location.”
Before his eyes loomed an enormous rock formation, its height so astonishing that its peak vanished into the distance. This implied that the mine was extraordinarily vast—far too enormous to have been carved out by human labor alone. Beneath the rock, numerous supports had been erected, and a large opening that had been meticulously excavated. Through this excavated area, Chaoyang glimpsed many emerald-green ore veins, jaggedly embedded in the rock, resembling the twisting branches of an ancient, thousand-year-old tree.
“Quick! Send the next group up! They won’t be able to hold on much longer!” someone commanded.
A team carrying stretchers rushed towards the base of rock formation, the stretchers bearing miners soaked in fresh blood. As they were placed under the glow of emerald-green ore veins, an astonishing transformation began. The gruesome wounds started to heal, the torn flesh and gaping holes rapidly expanding and closing at an alarming speed before his eyes, soon giving rise to tender sprouts of new skin tissue.
“Time’s up, withdraw them now!” someone barked an order from behind.
The team lifted the stretchers once more and hurried back along the same route. It wasn’t until they’d put two or three hundred meters between themselves and the rock formation that they collectively heave a sigh of relief.
“Mr. Douelle, how long will it take for these men to recover?” the leader asked.
A man dressed like a scholar walked over and conducted a cursory examination. “They’ll need at least half a month’s rest,” he continued as he assessed, “After that, they should be capable of another three months’ work before needing more time off.”
“Could you shorten the rest time a bit? For example… taking just a week of rese ?”
“Don’t you understand what ‘at least’ means?” the scholar snapped impatiently. “What’s the matter—are you in such a hurry to finish the job?”
“Yes… the boss is really breathing down our necks.”
“Suit yourselves,” the scholar replied, unconcerned. “But if they only rest for a week, their relapse will be very rapid. They might even be rendered unusable after just one more round of work. Of course, if you’re willing to buy people like cattle—no problem—”
Before he could finish his sentence, a thunderous explosion erupted behind the group!
The powerful shockwave sent everyone staggering, and the patients on their stretchers tumbled to the ground. Through the inverted view as he fell, Chaoyang saw dozens of miners armed with muskets emerging from the swirling smoke, led by the woman he recognized as the current room partner of Lovisia.
