Chapter 113: Midnight Infiltration
“Found it. The source is directly below us,” Luo Di announced fifteen minutes later. “Can you make out what’s down there?”
They hovered approximately a hundred meters above the ground. With only moonlight and starlight illuminating the scene. Chaoyang could barely discern a dark silhouette spanning the beach and the crashing waves. “Let’s descend further. It’s too dark here.”
Luo Di rapidly dropped down rapidly by a considerable distance.
The shadowy mass expanded as they descended, fracturing into jagged outlines like a patchwork of debris rather than a single structure.
Chaoyang studied it for a while before suddenly realizing what these were and said gaspingly. “It’s a ship graveyard! Those are all wrecked and abandoned sea vessels below!”
“Clever, This could indeed be a good hiding spot,” Luo Di murmured. After scanning for guards, she guided them soundlessly onto the bridge of a rust-eaten, dilapidated ship. It was clear that the vessel beneath their feet was an ocean-going freighter; its steel deck was marred by rust, and half of it lay submerged in the sea, salt crusted its deck, and every wave slammed the hull with a hollow boom.
But soon the two noticed something odd. strung along the railings on either side of the ship’s bow were clusters of sea fish.
Clearly, these weren’t fish that had jumped up and hooked themselves on the rail. Undoubtedly, someone had been living here for a long time.”
“Can you use Dreamwalking through a wall?” asked Luo Di.
“If it’s just to plant simple suggestions, a wall is no problem. But to read memories, it’s best to be close.” Chaoyang replied as he closed his eyes and began to create a clone. “Let’s use the old method again. I’ll slip inside, and you can guide me through my vision feed.”
“The advantage of his abundant Wish Power was being able to use his abilities fully. A temporary clone costing 50 units of Wish Power wasn’t much for him anymore, the main cost was just time he was using here.”
“Next was optical invisibility, which costed 5 units of Wish Power per hour.”
One and a half hours later, Chaoyang’s clone completely merged with the background jumped through the bridge window and started descending the stairs. Inside the ship, the light was much dimmer than outside, it was nearly pitch black, as if one couldn’t see one’s hand in front of them. Following his usual habit, he activated Spirit vision to obtain enhanced night vision for close range observation. However, he was surprised to find that his newly acquired transparent circle almost outlined the environment in minute detail!
In particular, the small area that had been filled in displayed a striking gray-white hue, almost indistinguishable from daylight.
“Can you see the surroundings clearly?” he asked, suddenly remembering that the angel was still linked to his vision.”
“Just about managing,” she replied. “It’s exactly as you see it.”
It seems the other party couldn’t see the transparent circle.
Chaoyang didn’t ask further and continued to the ship’s lower deck. Although there was no sign of water damage here, but the entrance to the cabins was blocked by an iron door.
This iron door wasn’t a common watertight door; it even had a handle on the outside. He tried to push it, but found it was locked.
“Looks like we’ll have to find another way…” he muttered.
“Don’t you know how to pick locks?” Luo Di asked.
“Of course not! I’m a law-abiding citizen!” Chaoyang retorted with a clever remark but couldn’t help but ask, “Can you?”
Luo Di’s voice dropped, becoming almost a whisper, “…I learned a little, how to do that back in the slums.”
“Well, let’s give it a try then. Focus your mind, and I’ll guide your consciousness in.” Chaoyang said.
This isn’t the first time he had done this. He used the same method of mind merging to put Zhang Zhiyuan and Zhou Zhi into one body before. “Now, I’ll release some of my control on the body, you can try moving your hands.”
“This feeling… it’s really strange…” Luo Di murmured.
“After all, we’re sharing a body now. So… can you move?”
Using her consciousness, the angel slightly raised a hand, and the body responded immediately. “It worked! But I need tools, like… hairpins or something.”
“That’s Simple.” Chaoyang conjured up two hairpins with his wish power. “Here you go.”
“Demon abilities are truly too convenient!” Luo Di exclaimed, a hint of envy in her voice.
“It still takes wish power, though. If we hadn’t found Paradise, I’d probably be drinking Granny Meng’s Soup right now.”
“What soup?” the angel asked, still fiddling with the lock.
“A soup that grants you rebirth. It’s an Eastern specialty. If you ever got s chance to visit, I’ll treat you to some for taste.”
“Hmm, feels like you’re pulling my leg… Ah, it’s open!” With a soft click, the doorknob turned all the way.
Luo Di then saw words appear in her vision, [Lockpicking Technique level increased!]
If it’s alright with you, I’d prefer you didn’t waste wish power on things like this.
“Just visual effects, it doesn’t cost anything.” Chaoyang took back control of his hands and gently pushed the iron door open. To their surprise, a faint light flickered below in the ship’s hold!
“Watch out, There’s someone on your left!” Luo Di warned.
They saw a burly man approached along the iron grated corridor. His footsteps echoed loudly throughout the hold.
When he reached the door, he glanced around, then muttered with a puzzled expression, “Guess I must have misheard…” before retreating into the shadows.
Chaoyang let out a soft sigh of relief, grateful he’d slammed the door shut just in time. At their closest, the two were no more than thirty centimeters apart ; calling it a near miss wouldn’t be an exaggeration.
“Where’s the target?”
“About seventy meters away from you, but you need to continue descending.”
Chaoyang gently lifted his foot and started to move slowly. The paths throughout the cabin were mostly semi-suspended iron grates, and footsteps created a noticeable echo on them. Even though he could become invisible, but he couldn’t mask the sounds he made, so moving in these areas required extreme care.
Peering down into the corridor, he could see five or six iron barrels placed within the empty cargo hold. These barrels contained burning wood and oil, which served as the only light source. Next to these barrels, about a hundred people were sleeping. They didn’t even have beds and could only lie on simple floor mats. Some of them appeared to be injured, with bandages and bloodstains visible on their bodies.
There was no doubt – the Miner’s Brotherhood had transformed the ship graveyard into their secret hideout.
But thinking about it more carefully, one would realize this was actually a perfect place. The wilderness southeast of Glorious Fortress was often visited by pirates, so most people simply wouldn’t dare to come near this dangerous area. The City Guard patrols focused on protecting the few fishing villages along the south bank and posed a limited threat to the Brotherhood itself. Moreover, with no fog at sea, they could easily travel north by small boat, following the coastline all the way to the east side of the mining area, to meet their comrades escaping from the mining district.”
The only problem was the watchtower which stood in the southeast corner of the city. If they spotted many people moving between the wilderness and the city, suspicion would definitely arise. So, Chaoyang surmised that this graveyard area must also have a secret passage connecting it to Glorious Fortress.
Following Luo Di’s guidance, Chaoyang went down to the lowest level of ship’s hold. After moving through the crowded center, he stealthily made his way to the partition near the ship’s bow. This space was divided into several compartments by watertight walls, and the source of the signal sensed by the angel came from one of these rooms.
He noticed that this area wasn’t even guarded. Perhaps because the Brotherhood had limited manpower, or because they believed the ship’s hold was completely secure. In any case, the only things now blocking them were a few thick, sealed doors. These doors couldn’t even be locked conventionally; with just a slight turn of the valve, the doors would swing open.
