Chapter 94: The Marriage of the Eldest Disciple
In the Time Chamber, Xu Fan drifted in thought, realizing he was already forty years old.
An ice mirror appeared before Xu Fan.
Looking at his ordinary reflection in the mirror, Xu Fan smiled. The face staring back at him had become quite similar to his former self.
The only difference might be the carefree aura surrounding him.
Thinking about all the tasks he needed to accomplish during the Qi Training Stage, with the annoying protagonist gone, his next step was to remain in the Time Chamber, conduct research, and wait for advancement.
Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, five years had passed.
At this time, Xu Gang and Xu Yuexian had successively defeated the puppets to get promoted, while Wang Xiangchi had successfully completed his challenge three years ago. Now, apart from the essential tasks from the sect, they focused on Xu Fan’s newly refined puppets, which had reached the Qi Refinement Sixth Layer.
Thus, the three of them fell into yet another round of trials.
The youngest, Li Xingci, was now twelve years old, a graceful young man showing early signs of elegance and charm, reminiscent of his father’s striking looks. He had already reached the third level of Qi Refinement, majoring in illusion and soul techniques.
His steady progress made Xu Fan extremely pleased, so he specially crafted a valuable artifact for him, the Map of Mountains and Rivers, worth considerably more than an ordinary precious artifact.
During dinner today, Xu Fan stepped out of the Time Chamber to join his four disciples.
Xu Yuexian had prepared a feast full of Xu Fan’s favorite dishes.
“What’s the occasion for such a feast today?” Xu Fan asked with a smile.
“It’s nothing special, just wanting to show some respect to you, Master,” Xu Yuexian replied, her gaze filled with endless memories. On this day, twenty-four years ago, she and her elder brother had been brought to this magical world, changing their destinies.
So every year around this time, she and her brother would prepare a large meal to express their gratitude and filial piety toward their master.
“Really? You’ve been with me for 24 years,” Xu Fan reflected, feeling the strange sensation of time confusion from being in the Time Chamber.
Counting his actual age, Xu Fan was now fifty, but he still looked like a youth. As a master alchemist, if he let his appearance fade with time, he might as well play with dolls instead of practicing alchemy.
“How are your grandparents doing?” Xu Fan asked, calculating that the elderly couple had likely passed away.
“Grandma and Grandpa passed away in succession, living a century in peace, without illness, and left in joy,” Xu Gang responded. His words held little sorrow; in their culture, when life reached its end, it was against the rules for the descendants to cry.
“Before they passed, did they have any wishes?” Xu Fan suddenly remembered that his eldest disciple was now over thirty.
“Of course, Grandpa had a wish, which was for my older brother to marry Little Xi,” Xu Yuexian interjected, feeling displeased that her brother had not fulfilled their grandfather’s wish.
“I only see Little Xi as a sister; I never thought otherwise.”
“I promised Grandfather just to give him peace as he departed,” Xu Gang quickly explained. His life goal was already set: to stay by his master’s side, fulfilling his filial duties while cultivating.
Seeing his eldest disciple’s resistance, Xu Fan sensed there was more to the story.
“If you have any concerns, speak up; the elder’s wishes must be fulfilled,” Xu Fan stated. He was aware of Little Xi, who had been adopted by the elder and had taken it to heart that she would belong to Xu Gang in the future.
“Master, Little Xi has five spirit roots, but her spiritual perception is weak, effectively ending her path as a cultivator.”
“An immortal and a mortal in love, I don’t want to hold Little Xi back,” Xu Gang’s tone was earnest.
“Your concern is valid; bring Little Xi over tomorrow.”
“Prepare; I’ll officiate your wedding then,” Xu Fan said happily, as if a cherished son he raised was about to get married.
Xu Gang was taken aback. Did his master start showing signs of old age?
“Master, you…”
"It’s just five spirit roots and weak spiritual perception," Xu Fan sneered at his first disciple.
"Ditching a girl who’s crazy about you for some immortal-mortal nonsense? Back in our village, you’d be roasted alive."
"Five spirit roots aren’t the same as having none. Do you know what the ultimate path in this world is?" Xu Fan asked Xu Gang.
"What is it?" Xu Gang perked up, and Xu Yuexian and the two brothers leaned in closer.
"The money-making path," Xu Fan said with a serious expression.
"Five spirit roots, weak spiritual perception? Just soak in a pool of five elemental origins every day."
"Still think weak spiritual perception is a problem?" Xu Fan continued.
"It’s not a problem, but the five elemental origins are treasures you can’t even buy with spirit stones," Xu Yuexian chimed in. "They’re heavenly treasures; cultivators below the Void Refinement stage don’t even get a glimpse of them."
"If spirit stones can’t buy it, are you using low-grade ones? What about high-grade or top-grade spirit stones? Still can’t buy it?"
"It’s just a matter of how much you’re willing to spend."
"You think your fighting strength is weak? Those two Core Formation stage dragons outside the inner sect gate charge 8,000 spirit stones for a ride. Think ten million spirit stones could keep you safe for ten years?" Xu Fan added.
"It’s down to 6,000 spirit stones now," Xu Gang corrected, showing that his master hadn’t been to the inner sect in a while.
Xu Fan shot Xu Gang a look.
"That’s the point—anything’s possible in the cultivation world."
"Now, if Little Xi can walk the path to immortality with you, would you marry her?"
Xu Gang hesitated, then asked nervously, "Master, if I marry Little Xi, can I focus on the path of cultivation?"
"………."
Xu Fan ignored the clueless guy and turned to Xu Yuexian. "First, get Little Xi registered as a fairy citizen, then set up a place for her in the outer sect’s fairy city."
"After that, your brother can marry her."
"Got it!" Xu Yuexian said excitedly. In the cultivation world, the higher your cultivation, the harder it is to have kids, so the Foundation Establishment Stage is the best time for it.
After sorting out his first disciple’s marriage, Xu Fan turned his attention to Xu Yuexian.
"Yuexian, you’re two years younger than your brother, right?" Xu Fan squinted.
Xu Yuexian suddenly jumped up and bolted to the kitchen.
"I still have a dish to finish!"
Xu Fan watched her go, then turned to Xu Gang. "See? Your sister’s sharp."
Xu Gang scratched his head and grinned. "That’s why I usually listen to her."
The simple wisdom of a straightforward guy.
After the meal, Xu Fan called out, "Alright, come out now."
"Your brother’s a bit slow, so I have to help him out with things."
"You’re clever; you can find your own husband."
"If you don’t want to, I’m not going to force you," Xu Fan said, shaking his head, oblivious to the joys of arranged marriages.
"Master, does that mean I don’t have to find a husband?" Xu Yuexian cheerfully ran over from the kitchen, a chicken leg in hand.
"Everyone’s so hard to deal with," Xu Fan sighed, gazing up at the starry sky.
