Chapter 6: Zhang Weiyun
In the morning, a light rain began to fall from the sky.
Xu Fan, wearing a special air shield to protect himself from the rain, hurried towards the beginner valley of Que Tian Gate, where new disciples were taught.
At Que Tian Gate, all disciples in the early stages of Qi Refinement were gathered in a vast valley, with thousands of new disciples joining each year.
Deep in the mountains, a massive city came into Xu Fan’s view. It was populated not only by new disciples but also by ordinary people serving the sect and some cultivators who had little hope of advancing further.
Every time Xu Fan saw the towering city walls, he couldn’t help but sigh.
“What’s the use of such tall walls?”
At the city gate, Xu Fan showed his token to enter and made his way to the area designated for new disciples. Having lived here for three years, he knew the city like the back of his hand.
“Hey, isn’t this Xu Fan? Back to see Xiao Yun?”
A middle-aged man called out to Xu Fan, who turned around with an awkward yet polite smile.
“Uncle Zhang, it’s been a while. You’re looking more energetic than ever.”
Looking at the man, Xu Fan was reminded of the little girl who had insisted on marrying him. At the time, he had found it amusing and had gone along with it.
“Alright then, I’ll be your husband. I’ll go and present the betrothal gifts to your father soon.”
What was meant as a joke took a serious turn when the girl’s father overheard, and suddenly Xu Fan found himself with a father-in-law.
“Whether I’m energetic or not is beside the point. First, give me the betrothal gifts. Xiao Yun has been asking to see you.”
“You’ll probably see Xiao Yun in the Outer Sect soon.”
The middle-aged man said, pulling out a paper crane and forming a spell seal to animate it.
“Uncle Zhang, please don’t tell Xiao Yun. I’m just here to give a lecture and then I’ll leave. You know I can’t stay here long,” Xu Fan quickly interjected as he saw the man preparing the crane.
“Too late,” the uncle replied.
The paper crane had already flown off into the distance.
“A man should keep his word, and your Aunt Lin and I are quite pleased with you.”
The uncle’s knowing smile made Xu Fan uncomfortable. Shouldn’t you be upset about what I said to your daughter? Why are you looking at me like I’m some ideal son-in-law?
“Alright, I’ve got to go water the spirit fields over there.”
The uncle patted Xu Fan on the shoulder and headed out of the city.
“Is your daughter’s future really that casually decided?” Xu Fan muttered as he watched the uncle walk away.
When Xu Fan arrived at the classroom, he found all the students already present—over a hundred kids around ten years old, all eagerly watching him.
“Are there really this many disciples taking the planting course this year?” Xu Fan asked, puzzled, to the old professor guiding him.
“This year, many combat prodigies have emerged in the Battle Hall, which has become somewhat excessive. So, the sect is focusing on developing talents in alchemy, weapon-making, and planting,” the old professor explained slowly.
“Macro control, huh?” Xu Fan joked as he entered. Today was his first class, with two sessions spread over three days.
In the classroom, Xu Fan looked at the innocent eyes staring back at him and felt a wave of nostalgia. He remembered his own first days at Que Tian Gate.
“I’m your teacher for the Small Spirit Rain Technique today,” Xu Fan said, casting a light curtain on the back wall.
The light curtain displayed the secrets and key points of the Small Spirit Rain Technique. Another light curtain appeared, showing a detailed human body diagram with clearly marked meridians.
“Since you’ve made it to this class, I assume you’ve already grasped the basics and have broken through the first stage of Qi Refinement,” Xu Fan began.
“Now, I’ll explain the key points of casting the Small Spirit Rain Technique and what to focus on when forming hand seals. The speed and intensity of the spiritual energy you channel within your body are directly tied to how quickly you form your seals. It’s not just about forming seals and releasing spiritual energy at the same time—that alone won’t guarantee success.”
As Xu Fan explained step by step, the young disciples’ eyes lit up with understanding.
“Finally, a teacher who actually knows how to teach,” was the shared thought among the students.
This knowledge was something Xu Fan had figured out on his own while studying the Small Spirit Rain Technique. Back then, his teachers had simply told him to read the jade slip more or practice the technique repeatedly, claiming that more attempts would lead to higher success rates.
An old professor listening outside the classroom nodded in approval, relieved that someone could finally explain such a basic spell in a clear and thorough way.
After the lesson, the next group of students was already waiting outside the gate.
“Goodbye, Teacher,” the students said, standing up and bowing in unison.
Xu Fan felt a strange sense of satisfaction as he watched them.
“I’m not done yet. Follow me outside,” Xu Fan said, leading the new disciples out of the classroom.
By then, the light rain had stopped, and sunlight filtered through the clouds.
“I’ll demonstrate the Small Spirit Rain Technique again, this time in slow motion. Watch closely,” Xu Fan said.
His body began to glow as he used the light shadow technique to highlight the meridians required for the Small Spirit Rain Technique. A four-meter-tall shadow figure appeared, slowly forming hand seals while demonstrating the flow of spiritual energy through the meridians.
A flawless Small Spirit Rain Technique took shape.
“If you still can’t learn this after this demonstration, maybe spells just aren’t for you,” Xu Fan remarked.
He then began the second lesson with the new group of disciples.
After finishing the two classes, Xu Fan was about to leave the city when a young girl with bright eyes and a beige floral dress suddenly hugged him.
“Husband, I finally found you!” she said in a sweet, playful voice.
Xu Fan tried to push her away awkwardly, but her grip was surprisingly strong, so he gave up.
“Xiao Yun, let me go. I was just joking back then,” Xu Fan said, exasperated.
“It’s not a joke. According to our village’s customs, since we exchanged tokens of love, we’re bound for life,” Zhang Weiyun insisted, holding up a Hello Kitty pendant.
“Look, Husband, this is your token of love.”
“That? I gave that to you as a toy. It’s not a token,” Xu Fan said, forcing a smile.
“I don’t care. You’re my husband, Zhang Weiyun,” she declared.
“………”
After much effort, Xu Fan finally managed to free himself from Zhang Weiyun and hurried toward Tai Xue Peak, where he still had classes to teach.
“If something like this had happened in my past life, I’d have been over the moon,” he thought.
“But now… sigh, romance is just a tragedy waiting to happen.”
With the strange system he had, he couldn’t even think about having a cultivation partner in this life.
After finishing his afternoon classes at Tai Xue Peak, Xu Fan returned to his little hill.
“In seven or eight days, the spirit rice will be ready for harvest,” he said, gazing at the fields.
“With enough spirit stones, I can finally start my journey into alchemy. I can’t wait.”
