Chapter 56: Giant Tooth
Xu Fan understood the reasoning but still couldn’t wrap his head around it. This was the cultivation world, after all—how could there be such a setup?
“Well, since we’ve run into it, it’s our lucky day. The meat of the barnacle beast is super tender, especially in soup—it’s absolutely divine,” Sha Diao nudged Xu Fan and said. Celestial Turtles like this aren’t rare in the Endless Sea; you might bump into one every ten trips on a Floating Sky Ship.
“If you’ve got any extra artifacts, you can trade them in the city on the Celestial Turtle’s back. Who knows, you might stumble upon some real treasures.”
Just then, Xu Fan noticed Sha Diao giving him a weird look—that strange sense of familiarity was kind of unsettling.
“Are we sticking around here?” Xu Fan asked.
“We’ll stay for half a day to swap resources. It’s the way things are done in the Endless Sea. Every trip, people bring along local specialties, and if we happen to run into a Celestial Turtle or a giant whale, it’s a big win,” Sha Diao explained. Xu Fan thought about all the artifacts he had on him and considered which ones he could part with.
The Floating Sky Ship came to a stop beside the Celestial Turtle.
“We set sail in half a day,” a voice boomed across the entire ship.
Xu Fan and Sha Diao stepped onto the Celestial Turtle.
“This place is pretty nice,” Xu Fan said, taking in the garden-like scenery.
“Cultivators living on the Celestial Turtle are really into flowers and plants, so it’s no surprise it looks like this,” Sha Diao explained. He’d seen similar Celestial Turtles a couple of times before.
The two made their way to the only city on the turtle’s shell, where the cultivators had already set up stalls, ready to trade.
Most of the goods on display were deep-sea specialties: spirit ore, underwater spirit herbs, bones from various sea beasts, and all kinds of spirit energy pearls.
Xu Fan stopped at a stall that had a pair of deep purple eyeballs, each the size of a basketball.
“These are the eyes of a Nascent Soul Stage Illusory Song Demoness. If she catches you in her gaze, you’ll be trapped in an endless illusion,” the stall owner explained.
“How many spirit stones?” Xu Fan asked.
“No spirit stones needed; just one top-quality artifact will do. My youngest son is at the Qi Refinement Eighth Layer and still hasn’t found a treasure he’s happy with,” the stall owner said.
“If your artifact impresses me, these eyes are yours,” the stall owner added with a grin.
Xu Fan thought for a moment, then pulled out a sword, a boat, and a shield—three top-tier artifacts he’d crafted himself, each far better than your average premium artifact.
The stall owner knew quality when he saw it. He reached into his storage bag and handed Xu Fan a bag of spirit energy pearls.
“How about these, plus the eyes, for your three artifacts?”
Xu Fan opened the bag and saw it was packed with over thirty pearls of various attributes.
After a moment’s thought, Xu Fan quietly handed the bag back to the stall owner.
“These are only worth two artifacts.”
“Then how about adding this?”
At that, the stall owner pulled out a giant tooth, taller than a person, and said to Xu Fan, “This is the main tooth of a Transformation Stage Red Dragon Shark. If you want to trade, you’ll need to throw in another artifact.”
Xu Fan’s eyes lit up at the sight of the giant tooth. It looked like it could be broken down to craft several artifacts.
He then pulled out a set of twelve curved blade artifacts, and the two struck a deal.
The pair continued browsing the stalls.
“Junior Brother Xu, any thoughts on that tooth?” Sha Diao asked with a grin. He was always curious about Xu Fan’s artifact crafting ideas.
“Hmm, I’ll use the best part of the tooth to make a vibrating flying sword, the shell for a set of three shields, and grind the leftover scraps into beads to enhance the spell of the Three Thousand Shields." Xu Fan even spared the powder, mixing it with other materials to create water-type artifacts.
“Junior Brother Xu’s mind is really sharp. If it were me, I’d probably just make a tooth shield,” Sha Diao laughed.
“Haha, I just want to craft a few more artifacts to earn some spirit stones,” Xu Fan replied, secretly deciding to carry all his artifacts with him from now on.
The two then bought some unique spirit bones from beasts of the Endless Sea, planning to craft more treasures when they returned.
Half a day later, they returned to the Floating Sky Ship.
In the ship’s cafeteria, while Xu Fan and Sha Diao were digging into their barnacle meal, Sha Yan arrived with a young beauty, someone Xu Fan had met once before, and they sat down next to them.
“Where’s the old man?” Sha Diao asked, knowing his sister wouldn’t dare come over if their father was around.
“Dad’s been in a bad mood lately. His beloved alchemy furnace exploded, and he’s been sulking about it,” Sha Yan said gently, her voice making Xu Fan’s heart skip a beat.
“Did he fail his attempt to become a Third-Rank Alchemist? Should I go and rub it in?” Sha Diao’s face lit up with glee.
“Your cultivation isn’t strong enough yet. If you mess with him, Dad might just hang you up and give you a beating,” Sha Yan giggled, knowing full well that the father-son tension had been resolved long ago; it was just a matter of pride now.
“Alright, I’ll wait a few more years before I say anything.”
As Sha Diao spoke, he pulled out a small alchemy furnace from his space ring.
“Didn’t his alchemy furnace explode? Let him use this one and say you found it on the ship,” Sha Diao said casually.
Xu Fan watched this with a pang of envy, suddenly missing the wooden stick he had at home, which was supposed to be a tool for discipline but had never been used.
Just then, a sweet voice chimed in.
“Thank you for fixing my alchemy furnace last time. It works perfectly now.”
Xu Fan looked at the young beauty in front of him and smiled, “So, how do you plan to thank me?”
This time, the young beauty wore a bright red long dress, like a blazing flame. Paired with her shy demeanor, she radiated an unusual charm.
“Once I get back, I’ll have the appraiser from the trading association estimate its value and pay you back the difference,” she said shyly, feeling a bit flustered by Xu Fan’s slightly teasing tone.
Sha Yan laughed and looked at Xu Fan, saying, “You’re flirting with my Junior Sister. She’s the treasured daughter of the renowned Qianbai Zhan.”
“Shallow is a good girl. If you treat her poorly, someone will make sure you regret it,” Sha Yan added.
At the mention of Qianbai Zhan, Xu Fan’s heart skipped a beat. He had seen the might of this Battle Hall elder firsthand; just the sight of his mountain-cleaving axes was enough to strike fear into anyone.
“Yan sister, you’re teasing me again,” the young beauty pouted playfully at Sha Yan.
Watching the two banter, Xu Fan had two choices in his mind, and in the end, he decided…
Only kids make choices; adults take it all.
“Alright, enough teasing. I brought Shallow here to thank you.”
“The alchemy furnace you remade for her works incredibly well, so Shallow insisted on coming to express her gratitude,” Sha Yan said, winking at Xu Fan.
“No need to thank me; I just used a bit of spiritual energy. The rest is all yours,” Xu Fan said earnestly, well aware that her father was a force to be reckoned with, and he wanted to live a little longer.
