Chapter 312: The Master is Away
Ninety thousand miles north of the Ten Thousand-Mile Giant Lake lies Mengjia Kingdom, now occupied by the Elder Council’s cultivators. All the commoners and nobles have evacuated, leaving behind desolate cities.
Ning Dao stood respectfully behind a middle-aged man clad in heavy armor.
“I didn’t expect you to be sent here,” Ning Dao said, his voice tinged with surprise.
“Our celestial tools monitoring the central continent aren’t just for show. We can’t send just any elder to face the two top-tier beast races,” the middle-aged man replied, his gaze fixed on the distant natural passage between the two realms.
“With you here, this passage is secure.”
Ning Dao shuddered as he recalled the elder’s past exploits. This man was infamous for hunting down traitorous elders of the human race, with records showing he had slain eleven such figures from the Elder Council alone.
“Ha! I like hearing that. I’ve been stuck at headquarters for centuries with nothing to do. Time to stretch my legs,” the middle-aged man said, stepping forward and appearing instantly before the natural passage between the two realms.
“I’ll go give those little brats a warning to keep quiet. You stay here and wait for me,” the middle-aged man declared before stepping through.
Not long after, a powerful wave of spiritual energy erupted from the Demon Spirit Realm, accompanied by furious roars.
At the two realms passage, a massive fleet of spiritual boats descended, and Xu Gang appeared beside Ning Dao.
“Greetings, Elder Ning,” Xu Gang said, bowing respectfully.
“Rise. Looks like you’ve brought quite the show—and plenty of goodies,” Ning Dao said with a smile.
“I’ve brought everything you requested, Elder Ning,” Xu Gang replied, grinning.
Countless tool puppets began manning the first line of defense, alongside giant cannons and strange mechanical constructs Ning Dao had never seen before.
Suddenly, a roar echoed from the two realms passage.
“Blood Refining Elder, don’t push your luck!” The voice was filled with frustration and helplessness.
“Elder Ning, what’s happening over there?” Xu Gang asked.
“The beast race’s elder isn’t around, so our elder is taking the chance to teach their young ones a lesson. It’ll save us trouble later,” Ning Dao explained.
Xu Gang nodded, though he didn’t fully grasp the situation.
At that moment, a flash of crimson light appeared at the two realms passage, and the middle-aged man emerged, holding a wolf’s leg.
“They’re tougher than I expected,” the man said, spitting out a mouthful of blood.
“Here, Ning Kid, a wolf’s leg for you.”
As the wolf’s leg thudded to the ground, the burly man vanished.
“Is this elder here to guard the passage?” Xu Gang asked.
“Yes, he’s the one dealing with that kid,” Ning Dao replied.
As soon as he finished speaking, he was struck on the back of his head, stumbling forward several steps.
“Ning Kid, have you grown too bold to joke about me?” a voice echoed from the void.
“Elder, I apologize. I spoke out of turn,” Ning Dao said quickly, only to receive another smack to the back of his head.
“……..”
At Hidden Spirit Sect, Xu Fan sat by the spiritual liquid lake, gazing at the six Dragon Eggs floating in the water.
"You guys, how long are you going to keep sucking up energy? If you keep this up, my puppets and production line are going to start eating into my spirit stones," Xu Fan said, his face showing a bit of concern.
Back in the day, it wasn’t a big deal, but now with the higher energy demands, without the Spirit Gathering Formation to supply spiritual energy, the cost in spirit stones was really starting to pinch Xu Fan.
Just then, Xu Fan sensed six faint consciousnesses reaching out to him, communicating among themselves.
Thrilled, Xu Fan extended his own spiritual awareness to interact with them and share some knowledge.
"Are you our dad?" asked a Dragon Egg snuggled up next to the Transformation God-level giant turtle, its consciousness faint.
"No, I’m your godfather. Your dad has gone to a place far away, so he asked me to look after you," Xu Fan communicated kindly through his spiritual awareness.
"What’s a faraway place?" another Dragon Egg inquired.
"It’s a place you can’t reach until you’re all grown up," Xu Fan explained.
Xu Fan then spent a good while chatting with the six Dragon Eggs, playing the role of a caretaker.
When it was time to leave, the six Dragon Eggs lined up to bid him farewell.
"Goodbye, godfather."
Xu Fan had hoped to spend more time bonding with the Dragon Eggs, but it was time to check on his buddy’s health, and that couldn’t wait.
Over at Wang Yulun’s mountain, Wang Xiangchi was practicing the latest version of the Five Elements Technique with his dad.
"Master, you’re here," Wang Xiangchi greeted.
"Mm," Xu Fan acknowledged, placing a hand on Wang Yulun’s shoulder.
"So, when’s that power going to burst?" asked Wang Yulun, now at the Qi Training Stage.
"It’s pretty stable for now; it’s growing every day, but it’s nowhere near bursting," Xu Fan replied, a hint of disappointment in his voice.
Seems like he got his hopes up too soon; Xu Fan was getting impatient.
Just then, a disciple from Qianling Sect arrived with the profits. Xu Fan glanced at him and asked, "Grape, why’s Master Qianling been so quiet lately? Just sticking to mining?"
"Lately, the Grand Elder from Qianling Sect has been on the ship, so Master Qianling hasn’t dared to make any trouble," Grape answered.
"I see."
Meanwhile, at the two realms passage, the human race’s camp was still pretty relaxed.
Some cultivators from the Elder Council were chatting with the Hidden Spirit Sect disciples who were manning the front lines, and the place had turned into a bustling marketplace.
"What are those tall towers for?" a Void Refinement stage cultivator from the Elder Council asked.
"These are our sect’s unique defense towers; they automatically absorb spiritual energy and can unleash powerful attacks," a Golden Core disciple from the Hidden Spirit Sect explained with a smile.
The Void Refinement stage cultivator looked at the hundreds of towers already erected and asked, "How powerful are these attacks?"
"It’s hard to say. Right now, they’re as strong as a full strike from the Nascent Soul stage. Given enough time to store spiritual energy, they can unleash the power of a Transformation God," the Hidden Spirit disciple explained.
"That’s impressive!" the Void Refinement stage cultivator exclaimed.
"And that’s nothing compared to this," the Hidden Spirit disciple said, pointing to the giant cannon on the tallest defense tower. "An electromagnetic cannon? If it hits a somewhat foolish Void Refinement stage cultivator, it would probably leave not even a trace behind."
After the Hidden Spirit disciple spoke, he presented a list detailing the prices and power of each type of tower.
"Elder, why not buy a few to place in front of your cave residence? You can even take them with you when you go out."
"When camping in the wild, they can even transform into a mobile palace," the Hidden Spirit disciple added, turning into a salesman.
Before the Elder Council’s Void Refinement stage cultivator could respond, the Hidden Spirit disciple continued, "Elder, don’t rush to refuse; why not see their power first before deciding?"
By now, many cultivators from the Elder Council had also witnessed this kind of sales pitch.
Over the years, the tower defense disciples who ventured out for training had all struck it rich, as many of them achieved financial freedom by selling the sect’s defensive towers.
