Chapter 25: Rescue
At this moment, the world seemed to transform into a single string of a musical instrument, and the phantom of a giant hand turned into a finger, lightly touching the string.
‘Zheng~~~’
Endless waves of sound surged outward like ocean tides.
Where the sound waves passed, all the Spirit Devouring Bees seemed to lose their souls, plummeting to the ground.
Xu Fan struggled to keep his body steady as he placed the two dazed individuals onto the Spiritual Wind Boat and quickly flew away.
Behind them, the massive swarm of bees that had once blocked the sky now seemed half-devoured, like cotton candy, and they fled in terror back to their nest.
On a sandy beach by the lake, a pale Xu Fan was roasting a plump wild chicken, while the two unconscious individuals lay nearby.
"I didn’t expect the backlash from using such a powerful move to be so severe. I wonder how long it’ll take to recover."
"Feels like a bit of a waste."
As he spoke, Xu Fan glanced at the couple who always seemed to be flaunting their affection in front of him.
No sooner had he finished speaking than he felt a surge of blood rise in his chest. He quickly took out a high-grade Qingmu Pill and swallowed it to begin healing.
Right now, Xu Fan’s spiritual energy was out of balance, and his blood flow was chaotic. Without a few days of rest, it would be hard to return to his previous state.
"Looks like I won’t be able to use spells that consume spiritual energy for a while, but I can still use mental techniques," Xu Fan said, glancing at the Earth Dragon Beast, a ten-layer Qi Refinement beast now under his control.
With the Earth Dragon Beast guarding them, they could safely make it through the next few days.
Just then, Wang Yulun slowly woke up.
"Is this hell?" Wang Yulun muttered, still dazed.
"Yep, you got dragged down to the eighteenth layer of hell because of your friends," Xu Fan said casually, turning the chicken on the fire. This guy was lucky to know him.
Wang Yulun suddenly snapped out of it.
"I’m not dead!"
"Big Brother Xu, you saved me and Qianer!"
Wang Yulun exclaimed, pinching his thigh and then grinning foolishly at his wife.
Xu Fan gave Wang Yulun a quick glance before returning to his chicken-roasting.
He tossed a bottle of high-grade Calming Pill next to Wang Yulun.
"You two took a hit from the sound-kill attack, and now you’re a bit out of it. Take a pill to avoid any lasting effects," Xu Fan said lightly, though his tone carried a hint of sadness. The Calming Pill was a first-tier pill, and just the cost of that bottle was around 500 or 600 spirit stones.
Wang Yulun picked up the pill, deeply moved. "Big Brother Xu, this is the second time you’ve saved me. Thank you."
His tone was so sincere it was almost overwhelming, as if he’d give anything Xu Fan asked for.
Xu Fan shivered slightly; he wasn’t used to such intense gratitude.
"Don’t get too emotional. This isn’t free. My fee is 20,000 spirit stones, and this bottle of Calming Pill costs 2,000. Make sure you pay me back once we’re back at the sect."
Wang Yulun’s face tightened; he clearly didn’t have that many spirit stones. Then he chuckled sheepishly, "I’ll owe you for now. When I have the spirit stones, I’ll pay you back a million."
At that moment, Murong Qianer stirred awake, took in the scene, and promptly pinched Wang Yulun.
“Dear husband, does it hurt?” Murong Qianer asked softly, feeling that she was still alive.
“Of course it hurts,” Wang Yulun replied with a pained expression.
“Dear husband, we didn’t die.”
“Thank you, Big Brother Xu, for saving us.”
As Murong Qianer said this, she tried to struggle and stand up, only to find herself powerless, unable to summon any spiritual energy.
After taking a Calming Pill that Wang Yulun handed her, she finally caught her breath.
At that moment, Xu Fan had finished his barbecue and started gnawing on a sizzling chicken leg.
“Now tell me, who was so bold as to provoke the Spirit Devouring Bees?” Xu Fan said, chewing on the chicken leg while looking at the two of them, shaking his head at their recklessness.
Wang Yulun scratched his head awkwardly and said, “Our plan was supposed to be foolproof, but we didn’t expect some issues along the way, and that’s how the Spirit Devouring Bees found us.”
“At first, we thought we could easily escape using the secret technique Big Brother Xu taught us, but I overestimated it.”
Xu Fan curled his lips, thinking if he hadn’t given them such a thrilling secret technique, this wouldn’t have happened.
“Setting that aside, I just want to know why you provoked those things.”
At that moment, Murong Qianer lowered her head in shame.
“The honey produced by the Spirit Devouring Bees has skin-beautifying, age-defying properties and is especially beneficial for those with hidden injuries; prolonged use can even eliminate hidden wounds.”
“When Qianer was born, her family faced powerful enemies. Her mother went to confront them right after giving birth, leaving her with lingering ailments.”
“I heard that the honey from the Spirit Devouring Bees can remove hidden injuries. The main reason for gathering it was to propose to Qianer’s family.”
Xu Fan understood then; another poor guy driven to desperation by the bride price, the evil mother-in-law!
“With your status as a preparatory disciple in Jia Hall, your future mother-in-law wouldn’t even look at you,” Xu Fan said curiously. Anyone with a bit of insight would see the potential in this guy.
“My mother-in-law said the young man is pretty good, so the bride price was reduced from 2 million spirit stones to 1 million spirit stones,” Wang Yulun said quietly.
“Your mother-in-law treats you quite well,” Xu Fan said with exasperation. One million spirit stones would take him over a decade to save!
“That’s why I took a risk, thinking of using this as a betrothal gift. I’ll gather some from my family to see if I can come up with 500,000 spirit stones.”
Seeing Wang Yulun’s hopeful expression, Xu Fan thought of his own past, where a bride price of 300,000 spirit stones had defeated him. He felt a moment of deep sympathy for Wang Yulun.
“After all that, did you manage to get the items?” Xu Fan asked again.
“I got the items, but unfortunately only half of what I expected.”
“However, I think it should be enough,” Wang Yulun said, pulling out a small vial.
At this moment, a glimmer of interest sparked in Xu Fan’s eyes. This honey sounded valuable, just what he needed since his spirit stones for artifact crafting were nearly depleted.
“How much is this worth in spirit stones?” Xu Fan inquired.
“2,000 spirit stones per pound; it’s rare and hard to find,” Murong Qianer replied softly.
Xu Fan’s eyes lit up. “Come, show me where you gathered the honey.”
Three days later, thanks to high-quality healing pills, Xu Fan had fully recovered. He was now riding a Cloud Flower Deer through a sea of flowers, with the bamboo forest ahead being the nest of the Spirit Devouring Bees.
As he approached the hive, the Cloud Flower Deer came to a stop, refusing to move forward.
“So this is the Spirit Devouring Bees’ territory; that works,” Xu Fan said as he tapped the deer gently on its forehead and instructed, “Find a place to hide.”
The Cloud Flower Deer was a small auspicious beast, beautiful in appearance, and most importantly, it brought good luck to its owner. After it matured, it could summon auspicious clouds. Xu Fan didn’t expect to have such good fortune to encounter a Cloud Flower Deer here and thought about raising it back home.
The Cloud Flower Deer “jinged” softly and ran back in the direction they came from.
“Spirit Devouring Bee honey, here I come.”
Using the Lightness Technique, Xu Fan transformed into a gust of wind and floated toward the bamboo forest.
