Chapter 60: The Enchanting Two
The light of the morning sun rose once again.
The Night Demon Army retreated from the city walls, leaving behind a ground covered with corpses.
Eddie’s hand holding the longsword was shaking until Luke patted his shoulder, and then he realized he had survived the war.
Soon after, a strong sense of achievement surged in his heart.
He instinctively raised the longsword above his head, "We… we won! We won!"
His voice was not loud, but it was strong enough to create powerful ripples on the silent city walls.
"We won!"
"We won!"
"We held the line!!"
"Damn it, aren’t they just some Night Demons? What’s the big deal!"
Cheers rang out on the city walls as the surviving warriors laughed joyfully.
Their cheers were both a tribute to the fallen and a hope for the future.
They knew that this Winter Fortress could be defended.
Kalian, like her people, was covered in blood, and her wide-brimmed black hat even had two holes in it.
She leaned tiredly against the metal shield that had turned into a mechanical bird, cleaning the air gun that had sent away countless Night Demons.
"Father, brother, I did it. I did not bring shame to the Tersk family. I defended the Winter Fortress. If you can hear my heart, please bless me to defend it again and again."
"They will surely hear it."
A cup of red tea was placed in front of Kalian, and she looked up to see Leo, dressed in crimson just like her.
"Eavesdropping on a lady’s thoughts is not something a gentleman should do." Kalian shyly accepted the tea.
"I am not a gentleman; I am just a believer," Leo said, sipping the tea and looking around at the masterpiece he had created.
He had initially suggested this plan with just a try-it-out attitude but did not expect such a clear result.
What a fight to the finish; the wisdom of the stars in his world truly is unfathomable.
And this feeling, as a player, of strategizing…
It feels great.
Kalian did not expect Leo to answer her like that. She tidied her messy bangs and joked, "Your way of answering doesn’t sound like that of a believer."
"Well, I only believe in order and logic, but that doesn’t mean I don’t understand humor and fun," Leo said, shrugging his shoulders.
"So, the humorous believer, can you help a tired lady get up?" Kalian laughed and reached out her hand to him.
"Instead of helping this lady up, I think sitting with her for a while might be a better choice," Leo thought for a moment, then directly sat down beside her.
"…" Kalian silently withdrew her hand, slightly embarrassed as she sipped her red tea.
The two leaned against the shield together.
The morning breeze still carried the biting cold of winter, and the heat of the red tea faded within minutes in the chilly air.
Leo had come to find Kalian, not because he had any feelings for this lady.
Well, perhaps that might be a part of it.
But more than that, he found that Kalian was completely different from all the believers he had met before.
The second heir of North Land is someone who cares for her people more than her own life.
If he can build a good relationship with her, maybe after the war ends, he won’t have to live in hiding anymore.
If he can gain the protection of the ruler of North Land, he and Miss Skuld would have found a safe place in this world.
As for the Order Sect…
They are a group of madmen and are merely a backup option when there is nowhere else to go.
That is why he is trying to win some favor at this moment.
"So, how is it, Mr. Humorous Believer?" Kalian said, holding her teacup with both hands. "What does it feel like to decide the outcome of the battlefield?"
"…" Leo thought for a moment and then revealed a smile he shouldn’t show, "If it were possible, I really wish these soldiers called up at the last minute didn’t have to come to this battlefield."
He felt that this was the best answer to gain favor with Kalian.
Sure enough, Miss Kalian was taken aback for a moment.
She could never guess that a man who could come up with such a devilish strategy would express such feelings.
After all, at the very beginning, Leo’s plan was truly to blow up the bridge of Winter Fortress…
Mr. Leo, what kind of person are you exactly?
A completely rational believer? A compassionate sage? A wise star of strategy?
Or a devil who treats all beings as mere pawns?
Which one is the real you?
After a moment of silence, Kalian lowered her head and said softly, "I’m sorry, it was the Tersk family’s fault. We let down the trust of our people—"
"No need to blame yourself, Miss Kalian. Your nobility moves me." Leo interrupted her apology:
"It would be better to say that without you, we could never hold onto the Winter Fortress. That would be true suffering. I’m curious, aren’t you afraid? This is a battlefield, and you could die at any moment."
"Of course I’m afraid," Kalian said, lifting her head. She looked at the ground line beneath the sunset, and the light reflected off her single-frame glasses. The red hair under her hat danced in the wind. "But… I don’t know why, I just feel that I shouldn’t leave here, that I shouldn’t abandon them."
She sparkled.
"…" Leo nodded, not saying anything more.
He didn’t have the same upbringing as Kalian, or rather, he had no idea how Kalian grew up.
So he couldn’t understand why Kalian would act this way.
The silence between them rippled with tension, and the enchanting air hung in that moment.
It lingered in the present.
The two of them actually had no common topics to talk about. Leo wasn’t a skilled admirer, so he simply held his teacup and pondered what to say.
Miss Kalian felt the same way; she was curious about the man but didn’t know what to say because of her status and pride.
She could only hold her teacup and steal glances at Leo.
"Um…" "Um…"
After a moment, they both spoke at the same time.
"You go first…" "You go first…"
The sudden simultaneous response made the already awkward atmosphere even more uncomfortable.
"…" Leo paused, shook his head, and said, "Miss Kalian, ladies first."
A crimson blush appeared on Miss Kalian’s cheeks as she shyly mumbled, "Why don’t you go first…"
"Alright, um, Miss Kalian, I see that your clothing and style are from the Mechanical Sect, um… have you always been there?"
"Yes." Kalian nodded and hugged her knees. "I have been in Robut since I was twelve."
Robut is a country that follows the Mechanical Sect.
"So, did you come back this time because you received a summons from the Duke of Tersk?" Leo asked his long-held question.
"No, I haven’t seen my father this time, nor have I received any letters from him." Kalian buried her chin in her knees. "Well, I… I came to investigate the suddenly active Dragon race and followed it here. I didn’t expect to run into the outbreak of war, so I hurried over."
"Dragon race?"
"Yes, on the north side of Robut’s territory, there is a mountain called Dragon Roar Peak, which is said to be the resting place of ancient dragons."
"Of course, this has always been an unverified legend."
"And I am not just a believer in the Mechanical Sect; I am also a scholar who studies the Dragon race."
"Just three months ago, someone witnessed an ancient dragon waking up on Dragon Roar Peak."
