Chapter 50: The Battle of the Winter Fortress
Miss Kalian had not yet spoken when Leo continued.
"If I intended to flee in fear of battle, why would I bother to say all this to you?"
"Isn’t it more appropriate to wait until we return to our Order Sect camp to tell the saintess our thoughts?"
"That’s right, it is," Miss Kalian nodded, her eyes twinkling, confirming Leo’s idea. "Mr. Leo, you are a noble gentleman."
Viscount Carter also let go, and there was a hint of respect in his gaze towards Leo. "Mr. Leo, you don’t seem like a believer in order; you seem more like a warrior—"
"Please, don’t say that," Leo quickly shook his head. His right hand placed over his heart, he spoke with a cold tone, interrupting, "Though I am merely a servant of the White Cavalry Army, my devotion to my lord is no less than any believer’s. I respect you and the warriors of the North, but that does not mean I can allow you to tarnish my faith."
He had to do this.
Even though he was not a true believer in order and held no interest in it, within this Winter Fortress, it was his most legitimate identity.
Without this identity, he would struggle greatly.
"I know this, Nono!" the mechanical bird explained, propping its chin with its wings. "Leo pulled out an Order Sword at that time! It is said only the most devout believers can use such power! Nono!"
When this was mentioned, both Viscount Carter and Miss Kalian seemed somewhat uninterested.
Especially Ms. Kalian looked at Leo with an inexplicable gaze, as if she were saddened that such a gentleman could become a believer in order.
"Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore," Leo shook his head. "The reason I want to discuss this matter with you now is that I have noticed there are significant flaws in the Marquis of Logan’s plan. If things continue this way, Winter Fortress may not survive many more siege battles…"
"Flaws?" Viscount Carter frowned in confusion. "Has Leo ever led troops in battle before?"
"No."
"In that case, with all due respect, please do not speak carelessly about military matters." Carter shook his head and bowed.
Understanding the Marquis’s battle strategy does not mean one can offer better advice.
Since the Marquis has already set the strategy, Carter had no reason to change the plan at the last minute.
Moreover, in Carter’s eyes, the Marquis of Logan’s tactics were flawless and would definitely defeat the night demons.
"…That’s alright. I hope my worries are unfounded," Leo said nonchalantly. "Once the first siege battle begins, we will know everything. I hope by then, you will not regret it."
Just then, the sound of a horn echoed in the camp.
A few seconds later, the messenger rushed into the tent.
"The Night Demon Army has arrived!"
……
At dusk.
War often breaks out quietly in the calm, like a drop of water falling into hot oil, making a loud splash.
On the city wall, Leo stood beside Miss Skuld, gazing into the distance.
Amidst the trembling of the earth, a thin line of black and red appeared on the far horizon.
That is the Night Demon.
And their mounts.
Night Demons, as the name suggests, are a race skilled in night activities. They look similar to humans but are more agile and stronger, and they excel in using dark magic.
The mount beneath them is a close relative of the dragon clan – the Giant Toothed Lizard.
This lizard, while not as fast as a human warhorse, has stronger battle power and impact due to its fangs and scales.
The only drawback is that they are quite rare; out of the hundred thousand Night Demon Army, only ten thousand are equipped with them.
Amidst flying sand and swirling stones, the Night Demon Army did not camp outside Winter Fortress as Leo thought, but instead charged forward with unstoppable momentum towards the stronghold.
That overwhelming force made the Holy Guards on the city walls shudder.
Not to mention those soldiers who were called up on short notice.
The archers holding longbows were trembling all over.
The soldiers in formation at the gap in the city wall kept swallowing their saliva.
Five hundred meters,
Three hundred meters,
Two hundred meters,
One hundred meters,
Finally, the Night Demon Army rushed in front of the Winter Fortress.
In the next moment, a dozen black fireballs formed behind the Night Demon Army and then crashed into the city wall.
Those fireballs fell like meteors, enveloping the stunned soldiers.
Before they could release their arrows, they were swallowed by the explosion.
"Ah!! What is that thing!!"
"No, no, no!"
"Mother!"
With a loud bang, balls of fire exploded on the city wall,
Amid the cries of the city guards, the night demon cavalry pulled on their reins, and the Giant Toothed Lizard suddenly jumped into the air, climbing onto the city wall and racing up.
"Damn it! These cavalry can actually climb walls! Curse it! Throw wooden planks!"
Amid curses, dozens of night demon cavalry had already charged up the tower, brandishing their spears, "Kill!" "Send these foolish pigs to the afterlife!"
In an instant, these soldiers, who had almost never been on the battlefield, did not even have time to react before their heads were chopped off.
"Form ranks! Form ranks! Don’t panic!"
"There aren’t many of their cavalry! Face the enemy! Face the enemy!"
"Load the crossbows, prepare the rolling stones and hot oil, show your best skills, don’t let those cursed lizards reach the walls!"
"…"
The officers
The shouts had some effect; the first few dozen Night Demon cavalry who charged up the city tower were turned into porcupines by the rushing soldiers. — After suffering four or five times the casualties.
"Hah…"
"Hah…"
The soldiers breathed heavily, listening to the approaching roars of the Night Demons, feeling the heat of the flames on the walls, and seeing their fallen comrades around them, trembling in fear.
"We can’t win, they are too strong."
It was unclear who started first, but a timid word of battle suddenly echoed in the ranks.
Immediately after, the hastily gathered soldiers lost all desire to fight, grabbed their weapons, and turned to rush down towards the city wall.
They were in a panic.
They were filled with fear.
"Run! Run!"
"Let me go! Let me go! We can’t hold this position!"
"Damn it, no retreat! No retreat!" Viscount Carter personally climbed the city wall, leading his inspection team, and executed the fleeing soldiers, "Cowards, be punished!"
The appearance of the inspection team stopped the soldiers’ retreat but could not restore their morale.
The Night Demons finally approached the city wall, set up their ladders, and the infantry began to climb the walls.
The cruel war reached its peak.
Leo coldly watched everything and sighed.
"Master, it seems you knew this would happen long ago," Miss Skuld asked.
"Yes…" Leo sighed deeply.
He had already guessed that this defense battle would fail, after all, how could a group of soldiers who had never been on the battlefield hope to face an elite force that broke through Mary Ann’s Great Wall?
Not to mention them, even Leo himself felt uneasy.
However, he never expected that they would lose so easily.
If it weren’t for the Order Sect being here, Winter Fortress would soon face a one-sided slaughter.
Now, the only support they had left was the church.
Saintess Fleur stepped out of the circle first, waving her staff…
