Gu Yan Fei felt a sweetness in her throat and spat out a mouthful of blood. Sweat covered her forehead, trickling down her temples. She wiped the blood from her mouth with her sleeve and muttered, “No spiritual energy… really restricting.”
Every world has its own laws. In the Yaoling Realm, saving an ordinary person would be effortless for her, but in this world, the spiritual energy was too weak. She was bound by the world’s laws, unable to use many of her methods. Reviving the dead defied the natural order, and she had to pay a price for it.
Juan Bi slowly opened her eyes, her gaze unfocused. It wasn’t until she met Gu Yan Fei’s eyes that her eyes widened, and she weakly called out, “Mis…tress…”
Juan Bi tried to lift her right hand but was quickly grasped by Gu Yan Fei.
“I’m here.” Gu Yan Fei subtly checked Juan Bi’s pulse again and said reassuringly, “You’ll be fine.”
Gu Yan Fei smiled, her bloodstained lips as red as peonies. From Juan Bi’s angle, she couldn’t see Gu Yan Fei’s swollen, bleeding left forehead, only her intact right side. Her hair was as dark as ink, her lips like red vermilion, and her skin glowed like snow.
In her prime, the young girl resembled a lotus emerging from clear water, with a strikingly beautiful and radiant presence. This smile was truly breathtaking.
Juan Bi stared in amazement, grinning foolishly. She vaguely felt that the usually quiet and reserved Second Miss seemed somewhat different. A cool breeze suddenly blew in, causing the tattered curtains to flutter. The ashes of the talisman that had clung to Juan Bi’s temples dispersed into the air, vanishing in an instant, leaving only a faint scent of burning. Juan Bi’s nose twitched as she was about to say something, but Gu Yan Fei spoke first, “Juan Bi, we need to leave here quickly.”
Gu Yan Fei firmly grasped Juan Bi’s cold hand, her eyes resolute.
In her past life, everyone else had died, and she survived by chance but had fallen unconscious from the severe impact. Her last memory of the carriage was of blood and corpses. She had developed a high fever, and when she woke up, she was already in Dan Yang City. The events of this day had become a nightmare she could never shake off.
Fortunately—
She was no longer the same person she was in her past life.
“Miss is right, it’s too dangerous here. We need to leave immediately!” Juan Bi nodded without hesitation.
She quickly packed a bundle, feeling a bit uneasy. Today, she and the Miss had gone to the Daxing Temple in the western suburbs to offer incense, and on the way back, they encountered a landslide. This area was so remote, there wasn’t a soul in sight for miles around…
“Creak…”
Gu Yan Fei pushed open the door of the swaying carriage and stepped out. Outside, dust filled the air, forming a thick gray fog. Rocks of various sizes were scattered everywhere, and occasional small stones continued to roll down from the high cliffs, creating a scene of devastation. The air was thick with the smell of blood, making one want to retch.
The horse pulling the carriage was dead, and so were the coachman and the maidservant. Their bodies lay beside the carriage, the ground stained with patches of blood, leaving almost no place to step. Seeing the tragic scene, Gu Yan Fei’s eyes deepened, like an endless abyss. She bent down, closing the eyes of the coachman and maidservant who had died with their eyes open, and silently recited a prayer for the dead.
Several lives were lost due to Fang Ming Feng’s selfishness! And this was just the beginning…
Some memories that had become blurry over the course of two lifetimes gradually resurfaced in her mind. Gu Yan Fei’s gaze grew colder. In the sunset, her eyes appeared tinged with red, as if stained with blood. The elegant and beautiful girl stood in stark contrast to the surrounding carnage. Just as Gu Yan Fei finished her prayer, Juan Bi, having packed their belongings, also got off the carriage. Seeing the gruesome deaths of the coachman and the maidservant, Juan Bi gasped, feeling the fragility of human life for the first time.
“Mistress…” Juan Bi, her face pale, nervously moved closer to Gu Yan Fei.
Gu Yan Fei discreetly calculated a divination in her sleeve and then pointed towards the setting sun. “We need to head that way.”
According to the divination, opportunities lay in the west.
Juan Bi quickly draped a cloak over Gu Yan Fei and helped her walk westward. The ground was covered with rubble, making the path uneven, so they moved slowly. The mountain wind blew, causing Gu Yan Fei’s cloak to billow and flap. As the sun set, golden-red sunlight bathed the hills and fields.
After walking for a while, they finally left the valley filled with scattered stones. When Juan Bi looked back, the carriage was no longer visible. Gu Yan Fei stopped, discreetly touching her abdomen, feeling a faint pain and a vague discomfort. She thought to herself: Could I have sustained some internal injuries? Should she find some herbs nearby…?
Just as the thought arose, she heard a boy’s high-pitched voice not far ahead.
“I swear I saw something fall from the mountain. It should be a carriage.”
“Xiao Shi, maybe it was just falling rocks,” replied a calm male voice. “If a carriage fell from such a height, it’s likely bad news.”
The sound of approaching hooves, mingled with wheels and bells, drew closer. Soon, a simple green-canopied carriage came into view, moving slowly towards Gu Yan Fei and Juan Bi. The bells on the horse’s neck jingled. Driving the carriage was a plain-looking young man in his twenties, dressed in gray. Beside him sat a dark-skinned boy of about thirteen or fourteen.
They saw Gu Yan Fei and Juan Bi and stopped the carriage a few yards away.
“What are you two young ladies doing here?” Xiao Shi’s rough voice asked, curiously eyeing Gu Yan Fei.
“Our carriage had an accident with falling rocks and fell from the cliff over there. My maid and I were the only ones who survived,” Gu Yan Fei said, pointing in the direction she came from, and sighed.
“You’re really lucky,” Xiao Shi remarked, giving the young man beside him a proud look, as if to say, “I told you a carriage fell from the mountain.”
“Gurgle…”
A strange noise suddenly broke the silence at the bottom of the cliff, drawing the attention of the other three towards Gu Yan Fei.
Gu Yan Fei was stunned. That sound? Could it be…? Her expression was a mix of surprise and strange curiosity. The next moment, a cold, pleasant male voice came from the carriage:
“I have some food here. If you don’t mind, you can have some to fill your stomach.”
The young man’s voice was calm and soothing, like the strings of an ancient zither being plucked or a mountain stream gently flowing. As he spoke, Xiao Shi opened the carriage door. A leaf, blown in by the mountain wind, floated lazily inside and landed on a short boot embroidered with silver cloud patterns.
Inside the carriage sat a young nobleman, not yet twenty. His eyes were bright as stars, his nose sharp, his lips red, and his hair as black as ink. His exquisite features and sharply defined lines formed a stunningly handsome face, elegant and noble, drawing one’s gaze irresistibly. He wore a frost-white cloak lined with white fox fur, his slender frame appearing fragile, as if a strong wind might topple him.
