Chapter 91: For the New World
Since the fall of the Euyun family and the second collapse of the Federation, the territory once controlled by the Euyun family in the Eastern Federation has descended into a state of anarchy. As a result, various armed groups have spontaneously formed, rapidly dividing their territories and beginning to govern independently.
The airport where Wen Jing and her team landed is at the edge of the territory controlled by the armed group led by Dr. Elsie. Before their departure, Dr. Mei’er had helped them establish contact here and provided a set of encrypted communication codes for coordination.
The land controlled by Dr. Elsie is her grandmother’s homeland. When Dr. Elsie tragically died years ago, her mother was pregnant with her. At that time, the Federation had issued a ban on asexual reproduction experiments but did not impose further personal control on Dr. Elsie’s family. Therefore, after undergoing inspections, her mother returned alone to her mother’s hometown, where she gave birth to her daughter and named her in honor of her mother.
In the years following her birth, federal agents occasionally visited to conduct home visits, checking whether they maintained contact with Dr. Elsie’s students and warning them repeatedly against engaging in biological studies and work.
It wasn’t until Dr. Elsie graduated from university that her mother passed away from illness. She returned to the city where she had lived since childhood, joining a tech company focused on city planning and becoming an intelligent path planner. Federal agents gradually stopped visiting her.
After the collapse of the Federation, chaos erupted in the Eastern Federation. Dr. Elsie reacted swiftly, uniting with members of the community union. Using city path planning maps obtained from her company, she first seized an unused underground air raid shelter, then incited the remaining armed groups to fight amongst themselves over city food reserves, seizing their weapon arsenals in the process and quickly gaining control of the area.
Although the whole process went relatively smoothly, the city’s food reserves were severely depleted due to embezzlement issues within some institutions, and the quality of supplies was inconsistent. Furthermore, they had taken in many refugees from nearby areas in the past few days, leading to even tighter constraints on resources.
At this moment, seeing the cargo plane—capable of carrying as much as a large cruise ship—Dr. Elsie approached Wen Jing, shaking her hand with an excited expression. “It’s time; it’s just right.”
At that moment, Xue Zheng saw Wen Jing shake hands with Dr. Elsie in the cabin. Turning backwards, Wen Jing gave her a gesture, indicating that all was well. Xue Zheng then opened the cargo hold. The entire back end of the cargo plane slowly lifted up, revealing neatly arranged supplies inside for everyone to see.
The people surrounding the plane became excited upon witnessing this scene, but no one rushed forward; instead, they turned to look at Dr. Elsie standing in front.
Wen Jing noticed the joyful expressions on the faces of those around her and their restraint. She became more confident that Dr. Elsie’s armed group would be able to lead some people to survive the impending apocalypse.
Then, after Dr. Elsie and a few nearby leaders discussed the order of transporting supplies, orders were given, and the people approached in an organized manner, grouping to load the supplies onto vehicles to return to the shelter.
Xue Zheng dragged the two people from the cockpit and tossed them aside, then walked over to Wen Jing, watching them move supplies while Dr. Elsie stood by, observing. Suddenly, her communication device rang. Dr. Elsie raised her hand to answer, asking, “Why haven’t they returned yet? Are there too many people?”
Wen Jing listened as the person on the other end explained that they were currently welcoming refugees from nearby areas. The person stated that not many people were there today, but a middle-aged woman insisted on returning to retrieve her husband after noticing empty seats in the vehicle.
Dr. Elsie frowned, “Didn’t you explain the situation to them? To prevent potential breaches of conduct, we don’t accept men here.”
“We explained, but she saw the empty seats and accused us of watching them die without helping. She tried to grab the steering wheel and has been subdued; I’m asking how to handle it.”
Without hesitation, Dr. Elsie commanded, “Let her off the vehicle and let her reunite with her husband. It will be dark soon, and more supplies are arriving. We have a lot to do, so don’t waste time; hurry back.”
“Yes.”
After Dr. Elsie hung up the communication, she turned to Wen Jing and Xue Zheng, shrugging. “In these special times, we can’t waste valuable resources on those who can’t think clearly. I hope you don’t think I’m being too cold-hearted.”
Wen Jing gently shook her head. “People must pay the price for their choices and decisions.”
Due to the overwhelming number of supplies in the cargo hold and the approaching darkness, and with limited lighting energy available, everyone decided to move some supplies first, planning to continue tomorrow. Xue Zheng returned to the cockpit and closed the cargo hold door.
A team stayed behind at the airport for security while the rest followed Dr. Elsie back to their base.
Upon entering the air raid shelter, the vehicles receiving refugees had already returned, and the temporary dining facility had begun serving meals. The further inside they went, the more inviting the smell of food grew.
Dr. Elsie invited Wen Jing and Xue Zheng to her office, asking someone to bring them some food along the way. Wen Jing and Xue Zheng waved their hands and patted the gear bags hanging at their waists. “No need to bring us anything. We have our own supplies.”
Dr. Elsie smiled. “Okay, then I just want one portion.”
After turning around a couple of corners, they arrived at Dr. Elsie’s office, a slightly shabby room with just a desk and a few old chairs.
Once Dr. Elsie entered, she casually invited them to sit at the desk. Soon, someone brought Dr. Elsie a portion of compressed food and a bowl of hot soup. She took the food, walked behind the desk, and began tearing open the packaging while inquiring about the recent status of the asexual reproduction laboratory.
Dr. Elsie had only connected with Dr. Mei’er, who had relocated to a neutral state, after the laboratory was destroyed in the Northern Continent three years ago. Dr. Mei’er had provided her with a backup experimental file carefully preserved by her mother, which her grandmother had prepared in advance as a precaution in case of an emergency.
This document significantly aided the reconstruction of the laboratory in the neutral state. Over the years, Dr. Mei’er had frequently contacted her to update her on the current research progress. Dr. Elsie was also aware of the recent breakthroughs in the laboratory and felt quite curious about the events of thirty thousand years ago.
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng had come here to ensure that those who could withstand nuclear radiation on the continent where the Federation lay could build a stable shelter amid the chaos. This way, when it came time to rebuild civilization, this land would not be left entirely desolate, and the surviving zones across the continents could share resources and establish a true global integration in a new era.
After chatting for a while in the office, suddenly, the communication device on Dr. Elsie’s desk rang. She answered, and the other end said, “The Special Operations Department is inquiring about today’s missing transport plane.”
Dr. Elsie smiled lightly. “The Special Operations Department is quick to respond.”
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng exchanged glances. After Xue Zheng entered the cargo plane’s cockpit today, she promptly turned off all communication and positioning systems. Currently, scanning in the Eastern Federation airspace had not yet resumed. The Special Operations Department’s ability to locate them so quickly indicated they likely had other tracking methods.
“That cargo plane was filled with supplies we had smuggled from here. What right does the Special Operations Department have to accuse us?” Dr. Elsie took a bite of the compressed bread and sipped her thick soup. “Let the people from the Special Operations Department in, but follow the usual rules—no men allowed.”
“Understood.” The person on the other end replied straightforwardly before ending the communication.
Recently, the Special Operations Department has been monitoring the situation in the Federation and has sent representatives to approach several armed groups in the Eastern Federation, mediating to prevent further escalation of conflict. Dr. Elsie had not hosted the Special Operations Department’s inquiries for the first time.
Before long, they indeed heard a knock at the door. Dr. Elsie said, “Come in,” and a middle-aged woman in a high-ranking Special Operations Department uniform entered. Upon seeing her, Dr. Elsie stood up with a smile. “Director Yao, it’s nice to see you again. Thank you for coming out so late. Please, have a seat.”
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng also stood up. Since they disembarked the plane, they had not removed their disguises; their current faces were those collected from Wen Yang’s secretarial team, so they hadn’t hidden away to avoid suspicion.
Yao Chi glanced at the two of them but said nothing, only shaking Dr. Elsie’s hand before stating that she wanted to confirm some matters privately.
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng said nothing in response, nodding and turning to exit. They were led by the person who had just brought Yao Chi to a small waiting room nearby.
After about half an hour, the person who brought them said Dr. Elsie wanted to see them again in her office.
When they returned, Dr. Elsie was just stepping to the door. Smiling, she addressed them, “I’m going out to check on the supply placement situation. Director Yao wants to chat with you two privately. It’s a routine inquiry; don’t worry.” She patted Wen Jing’s shoulder before walking out.
Once the office door closed behind them and they settled into their chairs, Yao Chi lightly spoke, "Wen Jing, you’ve been quite busy lately."
The two exchanged glances, confirming that the disguises were still effective, and turned back with expressions of feigned confusion, as if pondering, “Who are you calling Wen Jing?”
Yao Chi chuckled, shaking her head. “The disguise is intricate, but your posture and stride have not changed one bit. I remember you took my basic course on identity disguises at the flight academy. Are you returning the favor for what I taught you back then?”
Seeing that it was impossible to fool Yao Chi, Wen Jing laughed, raising her hand to remove her disguise. “Lacking skills is indeed a loss!”
Sitting next to her, Xue Zheng followed suit, revealing her face and grinning at Yao Chi. “Director Yao, please forgive us. We are doing all of this for world peace.”
Yao Chi looked at the two of them. “It seems we have different understandings of world peace.”
After speaking, she activated a device to project a world map onto the wall. The map illustrated the current state of various continents; some areas were chaotic, while others remained relatively stable. Yao Chi pointed at the map on the wall. “With the arrival of solar flares, the entire world will face severe challenges. What you’re doing now is not for the peace of this old world but for the birth of a new world. Am I right?”
