Chapter 87: Home at Wind Island
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng sat in the small lounge of the rest chamber, watching the personnel on the aircraft carrier carry their suitcases and leave the ship one by one.
Every time Wen Yang returned from a business trip with the ship, she always left last alongside the two captains and the secretary team. Naturally, Wen Jing and Xue Zheng would wait until everyone else had departed before leaving together with her.
Once they saw that most of the people outside had left, a message from Wen Yang arrived from her office, calling for them to come over. The two quickly put on their disguises and walked out of the rest chamber.
This time, there weren’t too many accompanying personnel on the aircraft carrier, and they were all people Wen Yang trusted. So, the journey was relatively easy to manage. However, the dock was crowded with people, and since they both had a "wanted notice" from the Special Operations Department, they decided to keep a low profile. At this moment, they disguised themselves as two members of the secretary team and followed Wen Yang through a special passage to leave the ship.
They got into a business car with Wen Yang. The secretary first dropped Wen Yang off at the Territorial Waters Convention Agency headquarters for a meeting. After she got out, the secretary then drove Wen Jing and Xue Zheng back home.
Zhu Long had arranged an apartment for them last time, but it was no longer convenient for them to stay there. Wen Yang also hoped they would come to live at her home, so the vehicle passed the apartment building where they had once stayed for two days and continued towards the eastern district of Wind Island. After about ten minutes, the car turned into a residential area.
There aren’t many permanent residents on the Neutral Continent. Even in the largest central city, Wind Island, the population isn’t dense. Therefore, aside from a few high-rise apartments in the city center, the residences here are independent little houses lined along the streets, extending far into the distance.
After driving for a while, the car stopped in front of a quiet, independent little house at a corner. It was secluded, with some distance from the other houses, and there were garages on both sides as well as a small stone yard, where artificial grass covered the ground. There was a swing set in the yard, and a square sandbox was excavated in front of the swing, with many beach toys displayed on the nearby rack.
The two got out of the car. After watching the secretary leave, Wen Jing stepped forward to open the security gate of the yard. She called inside, “I’m back!” and then led Xue Zheng down the paved stone path to the front door.
Wen Jing opened the door, revealing a lobby with a two-fish relief on the wall. Passing through the lobby, they entered the living room. Just then, they heard the sound of bare feet running down the stairs. Xue Zheng looked up and exclaimed, “I think I just saw a little hedgehog head run past upstairs—is that your niece?”
As soon as she finished speaking, a child with bare feet darted out from the end of the staircase. Wen Jing smiled and crouched down, scooping her up, and the child exclaimed cheerily, “Auntie, you’re finally back!”
Wen Jing easily lifted Hai Kui up, smiling as she weighed her, “Let me see if you’ve gained weight. I’ll know if you’ve been eating well just by the weight!”
“Of course I’ve gained weight! Because I’ve grown taller!” Hai Kui said proudly, wrapping her arms around Wen Jing’s neck, pressing her face against her shoulder, “Auntie, I missed you so much!”
Just then, the indoor elevator chimed, and an elderly lady stepped out. It was the aunt living next door, who smiled and said, “Wen Jing, you’re back? This little Hai Kui heard some noise outside and ran out like a gust of wind. I couldn’t catch up with her!”
Wen Jing greeted her with a smile and, hearing that she planned to return next door, saw her out. After the aunt left, Wen Jing introduced Xue Zheng, who stood nearby, to Hai Kui, “This is a friend of Auntie.”
Hai Kui sat in Wen Jing’s arms, shook hands with Xue Zheng, and then the three of them walked inside together.
The house was three stories high, with the first floor containing the living room, kitchen, and dining area. There was also a small gym and a guest room. After introducing Xue Zheng to the first floor, Wen Jing didn’t take the elevator but walked to the staircase, where there was also a spiral slide—it was from this slide that Hai Kui had just come down.
They walked up to the second floor, where there was a small platform with two sofas and a coffee table next to the railing. From there, they could see the living room below. On both ends of the platform were rooms with balconies, which belonged to Wen Kun and Wen Jing.
Continuing up the stairs led to Wen Yang and Hai Kui’s rooms. They didn’t go up any further. Wen Jing opened her sister’s door, and the room remained as it was before, but the bedding had been changed to a brand new set. Wen Yang must have called earlier to say that there would be guests, so a cleaning service came in the afternoon to change it.
Since Wen Kun went to college, he had been returning less often. This room still looked the same as it did before he attended university.
Xue Zheng looked around and noticed many trophies and medals displayed on the desk, along with numerous biological cell models. Everything was spotless.
“The guest room downstairs is a bit small and cluttered. If you don’t mind, you can temporarily stay in my sister’s room,” Wen Jing suggested, “Or you can check my room; it’s fine too. I’ll sleep here.”
Xue Zheng curiously examined the models in detail, waving her hand, “I don’t mind; this place is nice.” She then went to look at the trophies, “Your sister is amazing.”
“Of course!” Hai Kui chimed in proudly, “My mom is a super talented biologist!” After that, she started to introduce Xue Zheng to the trophies and models, explaining the origin of each one with great detail.
Xue Zheng listened attentively, nodding along, and when she finished, she smiled, “Your mom is impressive, and you’re impressive for remembering all of this so clearly.”
The three of them spent some more time in that room before heading back downstairs to the living room, sitting on the sofa to look at Hai Kui’s recent handcrafted projects with her teacher, which included a small wooden bridge, a little house, and an airplane.
They sat in the living room until it got dark outside. Then they heard a car pull up—Wen Yang was back. They hurried to the door to greet her and saw her secretary carrying two large bags—Wen Yang had brought back dinner from the cafeteria at headquarters.
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng took the two insulated bags and heard Wen Yang say, “You two set the table. I will go next door and sit for a while then come back.” After speaking, she pinched Hai Kui’s cheek and then left again.
After the secretary drove off, Wen Yang went to the aunt’s house next door to thank them for taking care of Hai Kui and chatted for a while before returning. When she entered the dining room, she saw Wen Jing and Xue Zheng had already set up the dinner she brought back.
Hai Kui had also been busy setting plates and utensils. Upon seeing her grandma return, she smiled and ran up to her. Wen Yang held her hand and asked how she had been during these days, and then they all sat down together for a happy dinner.
After the meal, they gathered in the living room to talk. Mentioning the medicine that Wen Jing had brought back for Hai Kui, they learned that she had already finished the last dose yesterday. Hai Kui said she felt completely well now and no longer felt sleepy all the time.
Wen Yang still planned to take Hai Kui to the asexual reproduction laboratory once more to check if she was fully healed. Wen Jing thought for a moment, “Let’s take Hai Kui there tomorrow; it’s also a good opportunity to check on their progress.”
Wen Yang nodded, “That’s fine. I will be in meetings all day tomorrow and might not have time. You both go.” She then reminded them, “Keep a low profile while you are out.”
Although the global wanted notice from the Special Operations Department wasn’t plastered all over the streets, it was still present in police stations in various locations. If they encountered inspectors while outside, there could be complications. The two replied in unison, “Okay, we will be careful.” Afterward, realizing it was getting late, everyone stood up and returned to their rooms to rest.
The next morning, Wen Jing opened her eyes in her bed and saw the sky outside was overcast. She blinked, sat up, got out of bed, washed up, and changed her clothes. Opening the door, she noticed the door across the hallway was still closed, so she turned to go upstairs to find Hai Kui.
Wen Yang had already left early, and the aunt from next door was here playing games with Hai Kui. When she saw Wen Jing come up, both of them turned and greeted her.
Wen Jing sat down on the carpet to play with Hai Kui for a while. Hearing the sound of the door opening downstairs, she went down with Xue Zheng to have breakfast.
Hai Kui had already eaten with Wen Yang earlier and saved some for them. The two quickly finished their simple breakfast, took Hai Kui with them, and headed out to the car that Wen Yang had sent to rush to the asexual reproduction laboratory.
Dr. Mei’er was already waiting for them at the entrance. Upon seeing them arrive, she nodded to Wen Jing and Xue Zheng, then squatted down to hold Hai Kui’s hand, “I heard you are completely well now. Let Auntie take a good look.”
Hai Kui looked up proudly, “I’m really better! Totally well! Auntie brought me a magical little pill; let’s try it on the other kids!”
Dr. Mei’er smiled, “The magical little pills we made for those kids are also in production right now. I’ll take you to see shortly.” With that, she led Hai Kui and the others inside.
They first went to the sampling room next to the main laboratory, where Dr. Mei’er took a blood sample from Hai Kui for testing. While waiting for the results, Dr. Mei’er talked about their progress.
During the days Wen Jing and Xue Zheng were away from Wind Island, they had consulted Ji Shu twice through the communication device from Ying Zhao’s side, which allowed them to complete the formulation for those kids’ targeted medication in such a short time.
However, the medicinal materials in their world had extraction technology issues, meaning the efficacy wasn’t as quick as Ji Shu’s formulations. After sharing the experimental data with Ji Shu, everyone discussed and concluded that they could create pills on a cycle of fourteen days that could achieve the same effect.
Once Dr. Mei’er finished introducing their current situation, the testing results came back showing that Hai Kui’s genetic sequencing had returned to normal.
Next, Dr. Mei’er conducted an immunity test against nuclear radiation. Though the formulation required adults to meet body fat percentage criteria, children could bypass these restrictions due to their higher metabolism. The current results also indicated that the formulation had successfully taken effect within Hai Kui.
Wen Jing then sighed in relief, knowing her efforts hadn’t been in vain.
After the tests, Dr. Mei’er took them on a tour of the laboratory, where they watched as pills were synthesized, pouring out from the synthesis machine one by one.
“Those kids are now settled in a welfare home two blocks away with decent conditions and environment. We expect all the medications to be produced by tomorrow. At that time, we will send someone over; you don’t have to worry,” Dr. Mei’er’s tone was filled with hope. Today’s result from Hai Kui’s genetic tests added a lot of confidence to her.
Just then, Dr. Mei’er’s assistant came over, saying, “Dr. Yan Yi is calling for a video call.”
Wen Jing and Xue Zheng exchanged glances. They had also intended to find time to contact Ying Zhao, and coincidentally, she called now. Everyone headed to the communication room, where Dr. Mei’er connected the video call. Soon, Ying Zhao’s face appeared on the screen. Seeing Wen Jing and Xue Zheng there, she smiled, “What a coincidence! I was just about to ask if you had returned to Wind Island.”
Then she mentioned that she had called to inquire about the progress of the lab’s medication formulation and whether they needed her to reconnect with Ji Shu. At this point, Ying Zhao’s expression turned a bit wistful, “The portal transition period is almost over—there are only two days left. During these last days, cross-time communication will become very unstable. So, I thought if you have time, let’s call the Ponsuo Tribe today to say our goodbyes, to avoid not having enough time later.”
Wen Jing nodded. They had returned to Wind Island thirteen days ago, and in another two days, their time period would no longer share the same dimension with the Ponsuo Tribe. Their next reunion would be in ten years; it was time to bid farewell to them.
They waited for a moment, and soon the other screens in the communication room lit up, showing Mo Chuan, Ji Shu, and Ti Ran appearing on those screens.
