Chapter 75: Time to Get to Work
"I have also been misled by slander…" Zhu Huai looked at Luo Yu and suddenly blurted out this half-formed phrase. She decided to act a little crazy to ease the awkwardness of the situation.
Luo Yu looked down and chuckled as she pulled the two documents from Zhu Huai’s hands and examined them. "Your Majesty, when surfing the internet, you must learn to discern rumors."
"There are a few posts that sound quite believable, claiming that inside sources have leaked information," Zhu Huai replied with a pouting expression. "Some even speculated that you had been secretly executed, how absurd! I guessed you might have defected."
After saying this, she quickly raised her hand to clarify, "But I only speculated based on what I read myself. I didn’t spread any rumors about you online. When we soaked in the hot springs, that was the first time I mentioned it to anyone, really."
Having finished reading the two documents, Luo Yu finally lifted her gaze to look at her. "Hmm, I believe this. You’re not the type to spread rumors."
"So, you really were transferred to the Time Bureau due to the Northern Continent Laboratory issue? What happened back then?"
"I thought I already told you and Ying Zhao about it?"
"Then why were you replaced at the last moment? If you had gone, perhaps it would have been intercepted."
Luo Yu lowered her head. "Because of the principle of avoiding relatives."
"Oh, right." Zhu Huai finally grasped the situation, remembering her sister, feeling a bit awkward. "Sorry about that…"
Luo Yu smiled and patted her shoulder. "It’s alright, it’s all in the past." After saying this, she placed the documents on the living room table, mentioning that she wanted to rest for a bit. Now that her identity had been settled, she expected Yao Chi or Zhu Long would soon have news for them to depart. They still needed to visit the recently rebuilt asexual reproduction laboratory before heading out.
Having driven all night, Zhu Huai was feeling a bit tired too, so she didn’t say much more. The two of them returned to their rooms to wash up and catch some sleep.
When Luo Yu awoke and opened her door again, it was just past noon. She glanced at Zhu Huai’s door, noting it was still quiet. Considering it was nearly time for the alarm to ring, she stepped out to order takeout for both of them.
She sat in the living room for a while, and when the takeout arrived, Zhu Huai finally shuffled out of her room. After they finished their meal, they decided to walk to the laboratory, thinking that driving would only require them to be tracked.
The newly rebuilt laboratory was located in a basement of an office building not far from the International Territorial Waters Convention Agency headquarters. This location had been secretly arranged by Wen Yang, quite a hidden gem. Though it was not close, it was also not far from their apartment, taking about half an hour to walk.
Facing the blazing sun, they hurried to the inconspicuous office building, entering through the side door as previously arranged. They climbed the stairs down to the basement, where they were greeted by the current head of the laboratory, Dr. Mei’er, waiting for them.
Seeing them arrive, Dr. Mei’er warmly approached and shook hands with both of them, then led them down a corridor and down another flight of stairs, passing through three gates before entering the main laboratory door.
Upon entering the large door, there was a small lobby with many black-and-white photos hanging on the walls. As Luo Yu and Zhu Huai walked and observed, someone turned the corner and, upon seeing them, froze for a moment before suddenly rushing over to gasp, “Ah Kun! You’re alive!”
Zhu Huai, standing nearby, took a step back in confusion and caught sight of one of the photos on the opposite wall. There was someone who looked strikingly similar to Luo Yu, albeit with a more refined aura. The name beneath the photo read: Wen Kun.
Dr. Mei’er gently pulled that person back, advising, "That’s not her; you’ve mistaken her. Don’t frighten her."
As Luo Yu was released, she stepped back, noticing the woman’s crestfallen expression, which stirred some sympathy in her. Still, she introduced herself, "I’m her sister; I’m called Wen Jing."
At that moment, two people in white coats approached, supporting the woman as they said, "You just took your medication; you need to rest. Come on."
Once the two had successfully led the tearful woman away, Dr. Mei’er shook her head gently and said to Luo Yu and Zhu Huai, "She experienced some trauma three years ago; please don’t take it personally."
Luo Yu watched the departing figures and softly replied, "It’s okay." They continued to follow Dr. Mei’er toward the main laboratory, feeling a somber air after the brief interruption.
After walking a little further and turning down a long corridor, Dr. Mei’er pushed open a door, revealing several researchers who turned to greet them.
The asexual reproduction technology documents that they brought back from the Ponsuo Tribe had already been quietly handed over to Hu Jiao while they were at the review building. The laboratory had begun working on targeted pharmaceuticals for genetic mutation, according to Dr. Mei’er. While they faced some challenges, the progress was reported to be quite promising.
Luo Yu nodded and discussed the purpose of their visit today. Considering potential misunderstandings with the documents, they prepared to connect to the Ponsuo Tribe through the lines established by Ying Zhao and Hu Jiao at the Time Bureau for a remote discussion, seeking Ji Shu’s help to resolve the questions they encountered in the ongoing pharmaceutical research.
Dr. Mei’er listened with great enthusiasm and quickly led them to a communication room next to the main laboratory. This room was specially equipped to strengthen signals, allowing satellite communications even underground.
Zhu Huai walked over to the communication device, first dialing Hu Jiao’s satellite phone to give Ying Zhao and Hu Jiao a brief update on their progress. Then, through Hu Jiao’s satellite phone, she connected to the spare communication device they had left at the Ponsuo Tribe’s communication station. Now, there were about fifteen days left in the portal transition period between the two time periods.
After about ten minutes of connections, a voice finally came through the communication device. "Luo Yu, is everything alright on your side?"
Luo Yu leaned forward earnestly and reported, "We’re all good here; the radiation protection agents have been poured into the sea." She then proceeded to update Ji Shu on the situation at the laboratory and introduced Dr. Mei’er, who was beside her.
Dr. Mei’er eagerly greeted Ji Shu through the translator, then detailed the recent progress of their experiments and asked a few questions about current challenges. Ji Shu patiently answered each one.
Due to the time constraints of the satellite encrypted network, after twenty minutes, Ji Shu finished answering Dr. Mei’er’s last question, and they had to disconnect. Luo Yu remembered that she and Zhu Huai would be heading to the Noah Launch Site in a couple of days, so she left Hu Jiao’s contact information with Dr. Mei’er, mentioning that they could reach out to Hu Jiao if they had further questions for Ji Shu.
Dr. Mei’er happily agreed and said she needed to quickly share the recorded conversation with her research team. She asked them to wait temporarily in the communication room and excused herself.
Although they had lost connection with the Ponsuo Tribe, the satellite phone remained linked to the Time Bureau. Coincidentally, Ying Zhao was currently working on a project to expand the time range and had some design questions about the time capsules for Zhu Huai. The three of them opened a video call in the communication room and chatted for a while. Once their business was done, Zhu Huai brought up the topic of releasing the agents at the beach the previous night.
Considering there were no outsiders present, and after asking Luo Yu beforehand, Zhu Huai mysteriously told Ying Zhao, "I have a secret to tell you." She gestured to Luo Yu, "She is Wen Jing!"
Ying Zhao turned and exchanged a glance with Hu Jiao, then looked back at Luo Yu and smiled, "Actually, I guessed before we returned."
Zhu Huai rubbed her head and replied, "Great, I was the last to know."
The group then discussed the situation over at the Space Administration. It had only been a few days since the new Strategic Commander took office, and so far, everything seemed calm. Luo Yu nodded, "Alright, we should be heading to the Noah Launch Site in the next couple of days, let’s stay in touch."
After they shut down the communication device, Dr. Mei’er returned to show them around the laboratory. Before leaving, Luo Yu handed Dr. Mei’er a card from Zhu Long, saying, "Research is expensive. This card has some funds, use it for now."
Dr. Mei’er graciously accepted it without reluctance, "Thank you, we have many procurement plans coming up. Money is one aspect, but large purchases may raise suspicions. We will be careful."
Luo Yu understood her concerns; there were many federal agents’ eyes on the Neutral Continent. However, if something happened at the Noah Launch Site, the federal personnel wouldn’t be able to focus on this area. Luo Yu exchanged glances with Zhu Huai and said to Dr. Mei’er, "Don’t worry. This threat will be resolved soon."
Just then, Luo Yu’s phone buzzed twice in her pocket. She took it out to find a message from Zhu Long, and they bid farewell to Dr. Mei’er, leaving the laboratory.
"When do we leave?" Zhu Huai asked as they stepped out of the office building.
"Tonight."
As they exited, the sky had just darkened. The two of them quickly walked back to the apartment through the streets bustling with tall buildings, remaining silent.
Upon returning to the apartment, they grabbed their backpacks filled with equipment they had brought back from the Ponsuo Tribe. After eating something, they sat on the sofa and began to wait.
At exactly nine o’clock, the panel at the apartment door rang, signaling their ride had arrived—a familiar black car that had brought them from the government airport.
They got into the car, drove for half an hour, switched to a boat, and then another half hour later, they arrived at an abandoned offshore drilling platform helicopter airport.
The boat that had brought them had already departed, and aside from the two of them, the entire airport was empty except for an unmarked helicopter parked in front. Following Zhu Long’s instructions, they needed to travel from there to the next airport, changing flights three times to reach a secret island airport near the Federation. There, an old model bomber, Hoot-12, from the World Unity Organization was waiting for them to use on this mission.
By the time they suited up in their wing suits and settled into the Hoot-12, it was already eleven o’clock the next night. Luo Yu sat in the front, starting the aircraft and checking the various functions, while Zhu Huai, in the seat behind her, studied the control panel in front of her.
At that moment, the communication device in Luo Yu’s helmet buzzed to life with Yao Chi’s voice delivering instructions: "The Noah Launch Site has ground-to-air scanning and missile interception systems. You must make the drop at the specified location. Regardless of success or failure, you need to retreat immediately after the drop."
"Understood," Luo Yu replied. She brought the aircraft onto the runway and quickly accelerated into the dark night sky, merging Hoot-12 into the darkness above.
Zhu Huai sat behind her, establishing the satellite communication when she suddenly received a message from Hu Jiao: "The nuclear leak at Poli Port in the Northern Continent is being poorly handled. The Federation has announced a forcible takeover of the port. The situation is tense and there is a risk of war."
Upon hearing this, Luo Yu squinted slightly, gazing into the chaotic darkness ahead. Throughout her life, her mission had always been to obey orders. Despite occasional minor resistance, she had always been accustomed to fulfilling the requirements laid out by the rules, striving to be an exceptional tool for decision-makers.
However, since returning from the Ponsuo Tribe, she felt many changes within herself. She gained a grand vision and goals she had never had before. At this very moment, she made the decision to truly rebel.
A gust of air rushed in, causing the cabin to shake violently. She gripped the control stick and said to Zhu Huai, "Hold on tight; we’re about to get to work." She then reached with her other hand to switch off the high-frequency communication system, satellite positioning system, emergency call system, and automatic reporting system on the aircraft.
Hoot-12 suddenly vanished from the Special Operations Department’s comprehensive real-time surveillance.
