Chapter 74: Deployment Site of the Agents
"Well, what a small chance of running into me in my office; how fortunate!"
Wen Yang strolled over, examining her from head to toe. "You’ve bulked up a bit, and there’s some flesh on your face. That’s great! I always thought you were too thin." After sitting down in a large chair by the desk, she said, "So tell me, what did you come here to steal?"
Luo Yu scratched her head. "I remember there being a real-time global current model here."
"Yes, there is. It’s in the second drawer of the right cabinet." Wen Yang looked at her. "What do you need it for?"
Luo Yu turned to glance at the cabinet behind her. Indeed, there was a three-dimensional ocean model locked away in a display case on the second shelf, marked with the current time. She thought for a moment and began to recount what she saw regarding the nuclear leak at Poli Port last night, and then she shared her experiences in the Ponsuo Tribe, along with the return of the radiation protection agents.
As she spoke, she stole glances at Wen Yang’s expression but noticed that she remained impassive. There were no questions or surprises—she simply listened quietly.
Wen Yang’s reaction today was somewhat unusual. In the past, after hearing such news, her mother would likely demand the radiation protection agents from her and insist that she shouldn’t be dealing with these matters.
Throughout her upbringing, Wen Yang had always been a very strong-willed parent. While she provided a lot of support for her daughters’ interests, she also exerted control over their lives. When her older sister decided to participate in a secret project at the Northern Continent Laboratory, Wen Yang had previously intervened out of concern for safety, leading to a family argument.
When Luo Yu was in the air defense forces, Wen Yang had insisted on Yao Chi not involving her in high-risk operations, so Luo Yu found herself repeatedly disqualified from future missions. She had protested against this, ultimately obtaining the opportunities she deserved.
However, everything changed subtly after the incident at the Northern Continent Laboratory. Upon learning that her sister had failed to evacuate before the bombing, she saw her mother for the first time looking worn out, telling her that she couldn’t accept losing both daughters and that she wanted her to step back from her affairs.
At that time, Luo Yu was determined to uncover the identity of the person behind the bombing orders issued within the Federation. Seeing this as an opportunity, she agreed to transfer to the Space Administration to confirm her suspicions regarding the Euyun family.
The senior officials of the air defense forces were initially reluctant to let her go, but out of respect for Wen Yang, Yao Chi covertly assisted her with the transfer application. This allowed her to smoothly complete the process within a year, even taking a co-pilot with her to the Time Bureau.
In Luo Yu’s eyes, her mother was a somewhat domineering and unreasonable protector. There was no way she would agree to what Luo Yu was planning to do. Yet today, until Luo Yu finished telling the entire story, Wen Yang did not interrupt or object. After she finished, Wen Yang calmly said, "Your experiences these days are indeed a bit beyond imagination, but I believe you and understand your actions."
Luo Yu blinked in disbelief. When did her mother become so understanding? This was quite a shock to her.
Wen Yang did not wait for her to respond and switched topics, bringing up last night’s sky curtain. "Did you see the sky curtain deployment while you were on the plane yesterday?"
"I… caught a glimpse."
Wen Yang smiled slightly. "I watched it in its entirety from my balcony. During one part, it gave me a lot to reflect on." She then mentioned a segment from the sky curtain that Luo Yu remembered, which featured Ao Ci giving a small speech at the Biological Research Station. "That elder said something I found particularly insightful."
"What was that?"
"She said, ‘We create life, but we never own them.’"
Wen Yang walked over, opened the encrypted cabinet behind the desk, and took out the real-time current model, handing it to Luo Yu. She smiled and said, "I pondered that statement all night. I realized I had been a bit thoughtless in the past, so this time, go do what you want to do."
Luo Yu stood there in shock as she received the model, feeling a mix of astonishment. "Really?"
"Yes." Wen Yang smiled warmly. "You’d better hurry and leave before I change my mind."
"Oh, okay." Luo Yu quickly made her way to the window with the model in her arms, ready to climb out, but suddenly she realized, "Hey? Maybe I can use the front door?"
Wen Yang chuckled as she picked up the documents she originally came for. "Go ahead; let’s exit through the parking lot together."
Luo Yu followed Wen Yang, holding the model, and inquired about the condition of the sea anemone. Wen Yang’s tone softened even more. "The medicine has been tested, and it’s perfectly fine. She’s already been given some these past couple of days. It’s proved to be very effective; she hasn’t fallen into a stupor again. This is your achievement. Once you finish your tasks, she should recover completely."
Luo Yu muttered, "Why am I not trusted with the medicine I provided? It had to be tested…"
Wen Yang shot her a glance. "You’re not a medical expert. Of course, I need to ensure that what my precious granddaughter consumes is safe."
As they were speaking, they had already reached the parking lot. Luo Yu pulled out another bottle of medicine and handed it to Wen Yang. "This is a backup. If anything happens to the one she’s taking, you can replace it with this."
Wen Yang accepted it and gestured toward a car parked not far away. "Did someone arrange a temporary residence for you? I can take you there."
Curious about where Luo Yu was staying, she thought for a moment. Since she had already handed over the model, there seemed to be no need for secrets, so she agreed and got into the car. The secretary waiting in the vehicle confirmed the destination, and soon the vehicle slowly started, leaving the parking lot. After turning five corners, it stopped in front of an apartment building.
Wen Yang looked at the apartment building with a knowing glance, already guessing what her daughter intended to do. She couldn’t help but scoff, "This little Yao is up to no good again. Unable to find someone suitable to help her, she’s set her sights on my daughter."
Luo Yu felt a jolt at the mention of Yao Chi and tightened her grip on the model in her arms. She turned back to glance at Wen Yang, hoping she wouldn’t change her mind at this moment!
However, Wen Yang didn’t say anything more, just regarded her and said, "Go on, I wish you all the best."
Noticing that the documents Wen Yang had taken that night were related to nuclear contamination purification, Luo Yu figured her mother would also be involved in the situation at Poli Port. She nodded and replied, "Alright, may we both have success."
Luo Yu opened the car door and stepped out, waving goodbye to the dark-tinted windows of the car, then turned to stride into the apartment building.
Wen Yang watched her daughter’s figure disappear behind the slowly closing door, took out her phone, and scrolled through her contacts. Her finger paused on "Yao Chi," then she turned her gaze back to the apartment building.
The buildings were dark in the night, with only a few windows glowing from scattered rooms. Wen Yang frowned thoughtfully, then put her phone down and told the driver, "Let’s go home."
"Ding! You have reached your floor."
Luo Yu stepped out of the elevator with the model in her arms, immediately greeted by an enticing aroma of fried chicken.
She walked a few steps inside and locked eyes with Zhu Huai, who was sitting at the dining table, devouring food with a drumstick in her mouth. When Zhu Huai saw her, she looked surprised. "Where have you been? Why are you only getting back now? I was worried for a moment!"
Luo Yu placed the model on the shelf in the living room and put her hands on her hips, staring at the table overflowing with fried chicken, cheese, and french fries. There were three large platters, each a different flavor of fried chicken. Raising her eyebrows, she remarked, "Your way of worrying is quite unique. Is this some sort of feast?"
"Not really." Zhu Huai wiped her mouth. "I need to fill my stomach so I have the energy to find you."
She waited for Luo Yu to wash her hands at the sink and come sit down before explaining how she had slept until dark after returning to her room. Noticing Luo Yu’s message when she came out, she had waited on the sofa for her, but after waiting until late at night and still not seeing her return, she had been simply too hungry to wait any longer and ordered takeout. If Luo Yu didn’t come back after finishing her meal, she planned to go look for her.
Luo Yu chuckled as she picked up a piece of fried chicken and took a bite. "Fine, since the fried chicken tastes good, I’ll let it slide."
The two chatted while eating, and Luo Yu briefly told Zhu Huai about the model she obtained, explaining that she had confirmed the recent estuary entry point with an authority, and considering the recent temperature, it was the place where the agents could spread globally the fastest. Zhu Huai looked at the distance to the dock displayed on the panel beside her, estimating it would take about two hours by car. She nodded, "Alright, time is of the essence; shall we go right now?"
Luo Yu had initially planned to go the next morning, but seeing Zhu Huai’s eagerness to leave tonight, she realized the urgency of the matter. So she agreed, and they no longer chatted casually, quickly finishing their meal. After tidying up the table, the two headed to the parking area beside the apartment.
The car they had taken from the airport was arranged by Yao Chi; it had left right after dropping them off. However, a black sports car was available in the apartment’s parking area.
This apartment was designed for cars to gain access without anyone seeing, so they could see the cars in the parking area from the living room window. Luo Yu pointed to the car and said to Zhu Huai, "We’ll take this one to the dock."
Zhu Huai scratched her head. "But we have wingsuits in our luggage. Wouldn’t flying over be faster?"
Luo Yu shook her head. "Too conspicuous; let’s be discreet and drive."
After thinking it over, Zhu Huai agreed. The two pressed the button for the car to descend and took the elevator down to retrieve the vehicle. Luo Yu went to the passenger seat and asked, "You can drive, right? I can catch some sleep on the way."
"I can drive," Zhu Huai replied as she settled into the driver’s seat, starting the car. She complimented it, "This car is nice; it’s the top model."
Luo Yu gave the dashboard features a sideways glance and shook her head. "Really? I don’t know how to drive, so I’m not very familiar with this."
Zhu Huai looked at her in surprise. "You don’t know how to drive?"
"What’s so strange about that?"
"It is a bit strange. I thought you could drive anything."
"Cars and planes have different logic in driving; I didn’t quite adapt."
"In what way exactly?"
Luo Yu propped her arm on the edge of the car, gazing outside. "I once broke the steering wheel while learning; it was a bit embarrassing, and I stopped. Besides, I don’t need to drive."
Zhu Huai chuckled at that. She knew that when fly an airplane, you often need to pull the control stick during takeoff and climb. The action of steering in a car must have been a muscle memory developed as a habit.
However, in their world, self-driving was already quite common, so driving was not an essential skill. Normal people traveled in cars that followed intelligent city route management. Only high-ranking officials from some special organizations preferred to have secretaries take the wheel due to concerns over unauthorized access to their personal vehicles.
Seated in the sports car, they sped towards the dock, feeling the slightly humid air of Wind Island. Though the environment here was still far from that of the Ponsuo Tribe, it was much better than the Liujin City in the desert. Luo Yu felt relieved that she had brought back medicine for the sea anemone. This allowed them to avoid staying in Liujin City and spared Wen Yang the need to take long flights for official business between Wind Island and the Territorial Waters Convention Agency headquarters, enabling the sea anemone to grow in a slightly better environment.
As Luo Yu pondered these trivial matters, she unknowingly fell asleep in the passenger seat until Zhu Huai gently nudged her, "Wake up, we’ve arrived."
She quickly sat up and looked around. They had reached the seaside, where the water was pitch black, with only a few lighthouses shining in the distance. They found a spot by the roadside to park the car and then walked to the rocky beach beside the dock.
Zhu Huai used a device she had brought to check the water temperature. Luo Yu took out the ocean current model, confirming the location of this entry point was accurate, then pulled out the blue liquid from her bag. The agents inside glowed faintly in the dark. She removed the seal and poured the liquid into the sea.
Once the liquid from the tube was emptied, she scooped up a bit of seawater to rinse the tube, ensuring the concentrated solution flowed fully into the ocean. When all the radiation protection agents were poured out, the two exchanged excited glances, thrilled that this important task had gone smoothly.
On the way back, Luo Yu again dozed off in the car. By the time they returned to the apartment building, the sky was already starting to lighten.
They parked the car in the vehicle elevator and exited, taking the nearby elevator back to the apartment, where they found a letter lying at the doorstep.
Zhu Huai went over to pick it up and saw it was their international citizenship status from the neutral state.
"Wow, their efficiency is pretty good." Zhu Huai opened the envelope, revealing two documents—one with her name, Xue Zheng, and the other with Luo Yu’s name, Wen Jing.
"Hey? Why do you also go by Wen Jing?" Zhu Huai examined the document closely, sensing something was off. "Wait, you aren’t that Wen Jing, are you?"
Luo Yu stepped forward, placing her hand on Zhu Huai’s shoulder and chuckling, "Funny timing; I was just about to ask you where you heard that I had gone crazy and was wandering the streets!"
