Chapter 8: Mission Accomplished
“Pay attention, this man is called Ben Shuai. He works at a fish shop.”
The rain, accompanied by the wind, poured in through the window that couldn’t be closed, soaking the desk in the room. The March wind still carried the chill of winter. Ben Shuai, lying in bed, could not sleep peacefully in this kind of situation.
He opened his bloodshot eyes and sat up, using tape to try to seal the window, struggling against the pouring rain.
“With a roof and a bed, it’s no different from sleeping on the street. That damn old man.”
But the “damn old man” was the owner of the fish shop, and it was a huge favor for him to get a room to sleep in. After all, what small shop would provide an employee dormitory?
The wind howled through the gaps in the tape on the window, making a terrifying noise.
With this eerie sound like a ghost’s wail, Ben Shuai knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep well, but the tape he had was running out.
“I help you sell fish every day. Even though I don’t sell much, and I often steal money, and I accidentally broke your TV, and I mixed the big fish with the small ones… but this is the kind of place you give me to stay in?”
Before working here, he had been involved in criminal activities. But he wasn’t the kind of person who got into fights or shot at people all the time, nor was he always outsmarting the police. However, he wasn’t exactly a good person either.
He worked for a kidnapping syndicate, but it wasn’t some small-time gang. This syndicate had branches all over the world, with operations that were very proficient.
Although the places where people could live had significantly shrunk worldwide, the term “world” still proved the syndicate’s impressive status.
Many of the hostages they had taken had given them five-star reviews because during their kidnapping, the hostages were treated like royalty—professional chefs took care of their meals, and top massage therapists helped relieve the stress from being kidnapped.
If the hostage was a student, they would even hire a tutor to supervise the completion of their studies while being held captive.
Some hostages, upon being rescued, even went so far as to apply for a membership card so that the next time a friend or relative was kidnapped, they could get a 50% discount on the ransom, which was quite a bargain.
Of course, for those who refused to cooperate… he had personally carried out a few executions.
In this line of work, mistakes were inevitable.
He had thought about the possibility of getting caught by the police, even considering that he might be shot dead while fleeing.
But he never expected that by chance, he would kidnap a major star who happened to be his boss’s mistress.
Seeing such a beautiful star, he couldn’t resist having ill thoughts… he almost tore up the ransom note.
Who knew these people were so extravagant, playing underground romances.
Fortunately, after working for so long, he wasn’t completely clueless. Just before he fled, he accidentally stole a criminal record from one of the branch offices.
Instead of handing it over to the police, he made a bold decision—he would blackmail his boss.
Of course, after extorting the money, he threw the criminal record at the police station and ran off, since his identity couldn’t allow him to directly face the police.
Why not just toss it at the police station and run?
Because he needed the money.
A person like him, with no skills or education and eager to get rich, what could he do after leaving the kidnapping business? Could he live honestly under an assumed name in a remote mountain village? Or could he become an internet celebrity: “Hey, everyone, I’m that kidnapper Ben Shuai, and I’ve joined Bilibili”?
It would be stable, but if he wanted to succeed, he couldn’t just play it safe. The small amount of money he had now wouldn’t even be enough for cosmetic surgery, as most of it had been spent on buying houses. He had bought quite a few.
It’s a stable choice, but if you want to achieve something, you can’t just play it safe. The amount of money he could currently access wouldn’t even cover cosmetic surgery, as he had spent most of it buying houses—quite a few of them, in fact.
He couldn’t change his identity through surgery. In a world where unreasonable abilities exist, even if he could live quietly for a while, the end result would likely be death. If nothing unexpected happens, the syndicate has probably already hired a capable person to find him.
Living a life of collecting rent while lying down was his lifelong dream, but now he was stuck in this shabby room, enduring the torment of the wind and rain.
Tomorrow, he’d move.
He reached under the bed for the bottle of alcohol, hoping to warm himself up. He was freezing, but he couldn’t care less about the stench of alcohol on him the next day—whether or not his boss would yell at him.
But he found the bottle was already empty, despite only taking small sips each time.
Looking out the window, he could see the lights still on in the supermarket downstairs. After all, it was a 24-hour operation.
He put on his coat, grabbed an umbrella, and walked down the dimly lit street. There were no cameras around, and the night roads in places like this were very unsafe. But for someone like him, a fugitive, what could be considered unsafe? This was exactly why neither the police nor the kidnapping syndicate could find him.
The street lights flickered, creating an eerie atmosphere.
The southern side of Fanzui City was extremely dilapidated, which was actually quite good.
At this time, with such heavy rain, the streets should have been empty.
But as he passed a streetlight, he saw a girl in a black trench coat, leaning against the light post.
Although she was holding an umbrella, a few drops of water still dripped from her hair, looking pitiful.
Even with her hair clinging to her skin due to the wetness, it didn’t detract from her beautiful face.
A pretty girl like her—if this were before, he definitely wouldn’t have hesitated to cover her mouth with a chloroform-soaked towel and take her away. Even if her family had no money, she herself would still be a valuable commodity.
Even now, in such a down-and-out state, when he saw the girl, he couldn’t help but think those thoughts. He paused in front of her, torn about whether or not to take her with him. The thunder and rain would make it hard for anyone to notice.
Was she a runaway? There seemed to be many children like that in this world, a world where anyone could become a mutant and be looked down upon.
It couldn’t be that this middle school-aged girl was sent by the syndicate to hunt him down, could it?
If she were a mutant, it wouldn’t be impossible…
His thoughts stopped there, and his steps, once paused, never moved forward again.
His mouth slightly open, the umbrella in his hand slipped out of his grasp without him realizing it.
He resembled a fish on the verge of drowning, or a heart patient who forgot to take poison, with a hoarse, raspy sound emanating from his throat.
He scratched his chest madly with his neatly trimmed nails, even ripping several holes in his thick coat, and despite the bleeding tips of his nails, he didn’t stop.
He stumbled backward, his eyes rolling back, blood pouring from his mouth and nose. His lips parted and closed desperately, his terrified gaze turned toward the beautiful girl.
The blood mixed with the accumulated water, deepening the already filthy color of the mud beneath him, slowly flowing toward a nearby drain.
Until the very last second when his eyes still had focus, he never understood how the girl killed him, nor why it hurt so much…
Mi Xiaoliu had never moved from her position against the streetlamp, not even touching him.
In his ears, it was as if a sad, rustling sigh could be heard, whether for the dead body on the ground or for her, who had once again acted as the executioner.
She turned and walked away from the first crime scene.
Lacking even basic knowledge, she naturally couldn’t comprehend how immoral the act of killing was to an ordinary person.
