Chapter 6: You Hit The Wrong Leg

Emily: “I learned through a simple personal channel that you’ll be coming to Fanzui City next month. Recently, I have a major matter to take care of. I’m not sure whether I’ll survive after doing this, but that child will definitely survive.

Oh, I haven’t told you about that child. She’s a child assigned to me by the organization I belong to, a very pitiful child. If I get to see you again, I’ll tell you about her in person. Though, maybe you don’t want to hear it.

By that time, will you be willing to protect us in the capacity of a Night Hawk officer? Considering we were once each other’s first love. Well, I’m bowing down to you, I admit I was wrong back then.

If I hadn’t come to you, she would have gone alone to find you after midnight on March 28th with her personal information in hand. I know this sounds like emotional blackmail, but could you look through her information and decide if you want to protect her?

You’re the only one I know who has the ability. If even you refuse, then ‘Easter’ will definitely not spare her. If you agree, use the shabby little house we rented when we were in love as your base. I noticed last time I passed by that the place is now abandoned. I hope you won’t mind.”

“Stupid idiot.”

The blue-haired man deleted this email from last month without expression.

It was raining heavily tonight.

On a rainy night, being able to stay at home, strip off your clothes, and snuggle under the covers for a good night’s sleep is probably the happiest thing in the world.

Yet, in this world, there are still some pitiful people who, despite the rain, have to work outside for a living. Just like the elderly person in front of him.

The blue-haired man sat in the driver’s seat, quietly lit a cigarette that cost ten miles per box, pressed the steering wheel with the trademark of a “Precious Donkey,” and honked the horn to warn the other person.

Through the car window, continuously wiped clean by the wipers, he could see an elderly person in a raincoat lying on their side, clutching their left leg under the car’s headlights.

Out in the heavy rain trying to scam for a living, it’s truly pitiful.

Many people who don’t follow car brands may not recognize Rolls-Royce or Ferrari, but if they see a Precious Donkey or Lamborghini, they’ll definitely know the name.

However, this elderly scammer likely couldn’t even recognize these names. Choosing such a remote stretch of road, he was bound to try to scam any car, no matter how high-end or cheap.

His actions might break the last psychological defense of a man frantically trying to save up for a house down payment, or they might take away money meant for saving a loved one rushed to the hospital, but how does that concern him? These people never care about what the money was meant for.

“Old man! What happened? Are you alright?”

Another young man in a raincoat “coincidentally” witnessed the whole situation. It’s truly rare to have a witness in such a remote area.

“Ow… look, he hit my leg.”

The man in the car furrowed his brow, trying to reverse the car, but unexpectedly, the old man swiftly rushed over and banged on the car’s hood twice with his iron head.

“What’s going on?” the man in the car asked, clearly not addressing the two in front of the car with the windows still up.

“‘Taking justice into your own hands’ young people have been deliberately damaging cameras in Fanzui City recently. The official repair speed can’t keep up with the destruction, and the police haven’t caught anyone. Now, it’s common to see people scam on these remote roads, it’s almost becoming a formal industry in Fanzui City.” The purple-haired lady in the back seat, playing on her phone, softly replied to his question.

“Scamming in the rain?”

“Probably to boost their performance before the end of the month.” The purple-haired lady flicked her hair behind her ear and smiled faintly at him.

“Heh.”

The man rolled down the window, and the rain immediately drenched his youthful, almost underage face.

“Get out of the way.”

“Younger man, you won’t leave without a hundred or so thousand today. Don’t look at the cameras, those cameras are broken.”

“…”

“Bang!”

In the midst of the conflict, this sound definitely wasn’t a good sign.

To put it simply, it was an American-style draw.

The shot precisely hit the old man’s thigh, creating a hole, and then the vehicle drove around them, ignoring the panic and wailing of the two, quickly speeding away.

“No cameras, yet you dare come out and scam people?” The man driving pressed the cigarette butt into the ashtray.

“Not even any cameras, and you dare to come out and scam people?” The man driving pressed the cigarette butt into the ashtray.

“You hit the wrong leg, he’s covering the other one.” The purple-haired lady reminded him.

“Tch, always trouble.” The man impatiently reversed the car, rolled down the window again, and shot at the other leg, then left just as stylishly as before.

“Wow, they didn’t see me, right?” The purple-haired lady hurriedly put on a mask as if to cover her tracks.

“No, they only saw me.”

“Oh, then it’s not a problem. What about the car? They might remember the license plate number.”

“Find a river and sink it, it’s stolen anyway. Do you remember the cityscape?”

“Just take me around more next time, the map’s enough for me to handle.” The purple-haired lady reopened her phone and resumed playing.

————————

Fanzui City isn’t a particularly bustling city, as you can tell from the old houses scattered everywhere.

This doesn’t mean the city lacks high-rise buildings, but the city is seriously polarized. The southern part, where Mi Xiaoliu lives, looks a bit run-down, while the northern part has the prosperity the city is supposed to have.

No matter how prosperous a city is, in some inconspicuous corners, you can always find old houses. This is something every city has, especially in this era where there’s no severe pressure on population and housing.

The peeling walls resemble fish scales, spider webs are everywhere, wooden structures are eaten by insects, and the indoor-to-outdoor height difference is ridiculous.

It’s completely uninhabitable, but as a hidden base, it’s perfect. Though, cleaning it up isn’t something that can be done in one or two days. Even just updating the furniture to make it habitable is quite an ordeal.

The only thing to be thankful for is that it hasn’t been treated as a trash pile.

Inside the small house, the blue-haired man lit a cigarette, quietly watching the gray-white screen on the computer and the increasing word count in the chat box.

Chat Box:

Steam Robot: Jungle, do you have a b? No dragon control, no crab control?

Void Ravager: I’m allergic to seafood.

Steam Robot: Terrible, and you think you can play games?

Swift Wind Sword Master: eeeeeqqwweeeee

Magic Cat killed Swift Wind Sword Master

“…”

With the explosion of a crystal, the blue-haired boy finally turned his head to look at the other two people in the trashy small house.

“Is this supposed to be setting a precedent for me?” The black-haired boy, wearing a raincoat, looked at the two people in the room who had been standing there for almost half an hour, his smile cold and insincere.

One of them was a purple-haired woman in an apron and mask, cleaning the room. She appeared to be between twenty-five and thirty years old, about 1.7 meters tall if you included her high heels.

She wore a beige coat, a black skirt paired with black leggings, and had an outstanding figure. From what could be seen of her face, she looked quite poised. Unfortunately, her mask obscured the full view, but even so, her body was enough to make the boy glance at her twice.

In comparison, the person who had just turned around after finishing the game didn’t seem quite as impressive.

With blue, messy hair, he stood at around 1.7 meters and appeared younger than the boy.

“How old are you? What’s your name?” The blue-haired boy furrowed his brows.

“I just turned 18 recently.” The black-haired boy at the door grinned, his smile far from pleasant.

“My name is Hayato Shigenobu, and my current status is a wanted criminal.”

He was a newcomer transferred from the organization’s personnel department.

“18 years old,” the blue-haired boy deepened his frown. He turned to the purple-haired lady:

“What’s wrong with the personnel department?”

“Think of it as training an intern, a nurturing game can be quite fun,” the purple-haired lady answered casually.

“You’re younger than me, aren’t you?” Hayato Shigenobu laughed, but it wasn’t a pleasant laugh.

“His age is much older than you think,” the purple-haired lady added with a smile, then waved her phone at Hayato Shigenobu.

It displayed Hayato Shigenobu’s personal information, down to his house number.

Hayato Shigenobu kept his smile: “They said as long as I follow you, my safety would be guaranteed, and I’d make money. So, who do you want me to kill?”

“Wait for someone.” After saying this, the blue-haired boy turned his attention back to the game.

Once again, the crystal exploded, followed by red text appearing.

After an unknown number of failures, someone finally arrived—but only one person, not the woman who had left the email.

This outcome was not unexpected.

The blue-haired boy extinguished his cigarette and looked at the girl by the door, who had been waiting in silence for a long time.

She was a strange girl with uneven twin tails, wearing a black trench coat.
