Chapter 5: Unlawful Work
Mi Xiaoliu had never told Yiwen about her ability, and even she had only just discovered it last night.
“Ah, sorry, I just happened to glance at your file.” Yiwen pointed at the physical exam report that Mi Xiaoliu had placed directly on her desk. With his hands clasped together, he winked at her, “Can you forgive me?”
Since it was the only thing she brought with her, she had casually placed it on her desk as she entered the classroom. The report had large, blood-red words stamped across it: “Refused to cooperate, retake next time,” making it impossible not to notice.
Other types of ability users didn’t have this “retake next time” privilege. As an uncertain factor who had refused to cooperate with the exam, it was essentially opposing federal law.
On the other hand, self-healing ability users were almost harmless and contributed to medical research, which was why they had special privileges. Although finding a job was more difficult than for regular ability users, at least they wouldn’t face disdain from others.
This alone was enough to make other ability users jealous, but self-healers would envy their cooler superpowers.
People always desire what they’ve never had.
“You should definitely keep something so important safe.”
“Okay.” Mi Xiaoliu seriously placed the report into her desk.
Yiwen seemed like a very nice person. Noticing that Mi Xiaoliu, who had just transferred, didn’t have a textbook, he voluntarily shared his book with her, even though Mi Xiaoliu couldn’t understand anything the teacher at the podium was saying.
In fact, she didn’t even know why she had to go to school every day.
She couldn’t understand, and she didn’t try to. She had personally experienced how uncomfortable it was not to have breakfast that morning, and with no memories of food, she couldn’t even fantasize about what she might get to eat for lunch like others would to ease their hunger.
It was a very tough experience.
“If you ever need anything, feel free to ask me for help.” Yiwen said during a break.
“Mmm.” Mi Xiaoliu nodded.
She remembered—she’d go to Yiwen for help whenever needed.
“Loan me 100 Miras.” She immediately sought assistance.
The amount wasn’t particularly significant; it was just the highest denomination of currency that her “common sense” told her.
“Huh?” Yiwen was stunned for a moment.
That was just something he had casually mentioned, and he hadn’t expected the person to ask for money right away.
Would a normal person do that? What kind of transfer student asks for money from someone they just met?
It seemed like the type who, after receiving help once, thought they had a good relationship with the person and kept asking for more. He had encountered such people back in middle school, and whether they would ever repay was a mystery.
100 Miras was not a small amount for an ordinary high school student.
But he had just said she could ask for help with anything, and rejecting her might make him seem unkind.
“Why do you need to borrow money?” Yiwen asked.
“Because I’m hungry.”
She gave a very straightforward answer.
Yiwen opened his mouth, his mind clearly running wild with strange thoughts, and looked at her with a complex, sympathetic expression.
He handed her a 100 Mira bill, the standard currency of the Federation.
“Master, money borrowed must be repaid,” Sasha bubbled up.
Hearing that, Mi Xiaoliu furrowed her brows and asked Yiwen, “Can I not repay it?”
She didn’t have the ability to repay.
Yiwen: “…”
“Master, that was very rude!”
“Remember to pay me back next week, or I’ll hit you,” Yiwen said unhappily, shaking his small white fist at Mi Xiaoliu. This gesture was caught on camera by some of the girls in the class.
Once again, Yiwen mentally labeled Mi Xiaoliu negatively.
Not saying anything more to her, he turned to engage with other transfer students.
He seemed like a genuinely warm-hearted person, not trying to get close to Mi Xiaoliu, but instead wanting to help all transfer students integrate into the group.
These students who transferred midway through the semester were usually those who had just awakened their abilities and become ability users, many of whom still hadn’t accepted this fact.
The best outcome for those who had unfortunately awakened their abilities was to become federal special abilities police, fighting against “super criminals” in a battle of wits and strength.
If they were lucky, they might even gain some fame, earning a bit of recognition among ordinary people and receiving the kind of admiration typically given to superheroes on TV.
Because most companies wouldn’t accept mutants for employment.
Though he appeared to be a nice guy, Yiwen seemed to be subtly probing everyone about their abilities, and he no longer said things like, “If you need help, feel free to ask me.”
“Old Liu, you’d better hurry up and pay him back,” Jim whispered as he leaned in. “Don’t be fooled by Yiwen’s pretty boy looks, he’s not someone to mess with.”
Mi Xiaoliu didn’t respond, quietly putting the money back into her pocket, watching Jim with a wary expression, like a dog guarding its food.
“Is he after my money?”
She still remembered what Sasha had said last night.
And Jim kept coming over to talk to her for no reason.
“…No, that’s probably just a normal desk-mate conversation,” Sasha replied.
“I almost forgot, buddy, the guy in the front row, far right, has the ability to foresee what might happen to others, like good luck, injury, death…” Jim spoke in a low voice, but before he could finish, the person he was talking about turned his head and glanced in their direction.
In the noisy break time, it was clear that he hadn’t heard Jim discussing him. He had just turned to glance at Mi Xiaoliu every now and then, as Jim had said. When he noticed that both Jim and Mi Xiaoliu were looking at him, he got up and left the classroom slowly to avoid their gaze.
Feeling guilty about talking behind people’s backs, Jim quickly turned his head back. “Forget it, when you have the chance, you can just ask him yourself.”
“How can I get money?” Mi Xiaoliu asked Sasha.
She meant how to acquire money.
“Today seems to be March 28th, with your current conditions, you can probably only… But I still don’t recommend this method. Or… never mind, Master, please open the system space,” Sasha said hesitantly.
Mi Xiaoliu had already checked the system space last night before going to bed. There were only eight slots, with many locked slots below.
It seemed that she could use system points to unlock them, but since she had deleted the system core, there was no way for her to unlock them.
Six of the slots had already been occupied.
[Flying Dirt]: Dirt that has flown through the air for a while. You can smear it on someone’s face.
[Beginner Combat Suit]: Click to wear a combat suit customized to your appearance with a one-click switch. You can make small adjustments.
Note: The suit can only be bound if your age and appearance match. Once bound, your appearance becomes fixed; you won’t grow taller or gain weight (Only your appearance is fixed; you can still get injured).
Effect: All attributes increased.
Enchant: Hidden — Wearing it helps you conceal certain traces of your actions (Such as erasing fingerprints, blurring camera footage, eliminating your own bloodstains.)
Status: Bound.
“This is something that the Master got from the system’s beginner’s gift pack. Actually, it was only two months ago that the Master successfully bound it.”
After all, this was an item she received when she was young. Back then, her appearance had not fully developed, and her height had nothing to do with “combat.”
[Magic Comb]: Instantly style your hair however you want. Long hair can be turned into short hair, and short hair can be turned into long hair.
Usage Condition: Must have hair.
[Mi Xiaoliu’s Diary]: As you can see, it’s just a diary.
[Black-hearted Red Pen ×3]: Red pens filled with black ink, or black pens with red outer casings. Ninety percent of students have done this.
[Letter]: An unopened letter.
Mi Xiaoliu had flipped through the diary as well. For someone with amnesia and confusion, a diary felt like a lifeline, but after flipping through two pages, she stopped.
July 6, 2xxx:
I’m not in the mood today. I don’t want to write in the diary.
July 7, 2xxx:
I’m still not in the mood today. I don’t want to write in the diary.
July 8, 2xxx:
I’m really tired today.
July 9, 2xxx:
I played all day today.
July 10, 2xxx:
It’s too much trouble. I won’t write anymore.
…
Such a diary is useless to read.
The three pens indicate that similar items can stack in the inventory.
“Master, I personally do not recommend this job…”
“Speak,” Mi Xiaoliu commanded.
“After twelve o’clock tonight, if you take the letter from your storage space to the address written on its back, someone should arrange a job for you… a rather illicit job.”
