Chapter 159: The Thief
An underground casino.
Elizabeth had a new look now. She was wearing worn-out clothes, had one eye covered with an eye patch, her face was a bit dirty, and she was playing with a gold coin in her hand.
Her left arm had been replaced with a mechanical one. Although her face was the same, the heavy makeup made her look very ugly, the kind that men disliked.
Anyone who saw her would think she was like a mouse in the shadows, either a thief or a streetwalker.
"Boss, what’s happening in the city today? I just arrived and the army has already blocked it off." Elizabeth sat on the bar counter, poured herself a glass of cheap beer, and asked.
"Ah, who knows what those big shots are up to." The boss wiped a glass and sighed, "The army is entering the City of Freedom again. Last time it was because of a big commotion caused by the mob. Who knows how many troops are coming into the city now."
"I don’t know about other places, but District 7 is locked down." Elizabeth sighed, "I just arrived from out of town, hoping to explore City of Freedom a bit more."
"I have everything you need here." The boss flashed a set of yellow teeth, "Are you here to gamble or looking for a man? I can help with both."
"I’m not really into the stuff here." Elizabeth looked disgusted. "If it weren’t for Mora Ballroom being closed, I’d definitely go check out the handsome guys serving the ladies there."
"Hmm, that’s not good. I heard Hausmann, the boss, got arrested. The police are going door-to-door looking for a singer, they say it’s because of jealousy. This big shot, I just don’t understand, using so many resources. A hundred escorts from here to there would be enough. What a spendthrift," the boss said, sounding like a wastrel. "The girls here are not bad at all. If you’re looking for someone young and fresh, I can arrange it. Why look for a singer, wouldn’t it be more satisfying with a different kind of service?"
"We’ve even experienced the singing of a top star. The resident singer at Mora Ballroom from before, she might be old now, but twenty years ago she was a great beauty, famous throughout the City of Freedom. Just the other day, she was with me."
"Going door-to-door searching for a singer… how desperate. Give me fifty Magic Crystal Coins, and I’ll keep him comfortable," Elizabeth scoffed.
The boss paused.
Fifty Magic Crystal Coins?
This seemingly casual remark made the boss furrow his brow slightly.
A regular female thief, even jokingly, would never ask for such a huge sum like fifty Magic Crystal Coins.
Thinking about the task assigned above, the boss took notice of this female thief in front of him.
"Hey, too bad you’re not a big star, let me take a look…" The boss studied Elizabeth closely, but she casually turned her head away.
"Ha, someone like you is only worth fifty Forged Coins," the boss chuckled.
"Don’t mock me. I had a big score the other day, and today I feel like having some fun," Elizabeth glanced at the boss, "Any leads? Mora Ballroom is closed, but there should be a good dance club in District Nine. I haven’t had a good time in days, and I’m feeling restless."
"Is that so brazen?" the boss teased, "I’ve got a lad here who’s only worth five hundred Forged Coins. I can find ten for you, guaranteed to treat you well and keep you satisfied, can’t get out of bed."
Elizabeth endured the discomfort in this place.
She hated how people spoke like this. When she earned her Professional Mark, she had a run-in and had to adopt the mark of a thief, but she didn’t enjoy the thief’s lifestyle.
"I have very high standards, I like strong, handsome Professionals, do you have any?" Elizabeth rolled her eyes, "Or perhaps a wizard."
"Wizard, that’s expensive. Even a first-tier wizard is still a wizard," the boss shook his head, "but if you want to go to District Nine, I do have a lead, just not cheap… ten Magic Crystal Coins."
"Okay," Elizabeth quickly agreed.
The boss showed a slight smile and quietly pressed a button with his foot.
Some thieves are careless with money, spending extravagantly and living recklessly. Some resort to such methods to avoid debts or evade capture.
Normally, the boss would find a way to get rid of Elizabeth, but today was different.
Boss Three spoke up, determined not to let this matter slide.
The gears underground started turning frantically, all without Elizabeth’s knowledge.
Obviously, there were many thieves coming and going here, and the boss was very experienced.
Elizabeth may be a sixth-tier thief, but that doesn’t mean she’s outstanding. It’s like someone having an excellent diploma but lacking exceptional abilities.
Bang!
At that moment, the doors of the underground casino were suddenly sealed shut.
Bang!
Another loud noise rang out, a bronze door separating the counter from the casino, and a few big men rushed out from behind.
The customers sitting at the counter drinking were all looking confused, clearly unaware of what was happening.
Elizabeth was startled, finding a card in her hand.
"Catch her alive!" the boss shouted loudly.
The big men took out tranquilizer guns and aimed them at Elizabeth.
The card in Elizabeth’s hand glowed.
[Name: Raining Blades]
[Type: Spell]
[Star Level: 3]
[Rarity: Blue Rare]
[Job Requirement: Thief]
[Description: Release a rain of blades at up to ten enemies, and randomly draw a card from the reserve deck to add to the current deck.]
Blades rained down from the sky towards the big men, but they were no pushovers. Each of them summoned a transparent shield in front of them.
Clang, clang, clang…
The blades pounded against the shields, shattering them into pieces.
A first-tier Professional can only use first-tier cards, but they are still considered Professional.
Raining Blades is a card that can attack multiple enemies at once, not just one at a time.
Elizabeth didn’t plan to do anything heroic. She quickly used a smoke bomb and shadow step, which are basic tools for thieves, very common and useful.
She had just dashed about three meters out…
Bang!
A cage dropped from the sky.
"Ah!"
Elizabeth cried out in pain as the cage from above hit her foot directly.
Bang bang bang…
Another round of tranquilizer darts rained down, with four or five needles sticking into Elizabeth.
"Run, why aren’t you running?"
The smoke cleared, and the boss walked to the outside of the cage with his hands behind his back.
Elizabeth could now see clearly that the cage she was in had two layers.
"The most common thing we encounter here are thieves, and what we are best at is catching thieves."
"Really?" Elizabeth raised her feet with force. "But what you’ve caught is definitely not a sixth-tier thief!"
