Volume 3 + Chapter 99: Investigation And Search
Laurel Academy.
“Mr. Biden?”
“Mr. Biden?”
The Sword Saint called out twice before Biden finally raised his head.
“What is it…?” Biden murmured, as if he had just woken up.
“…”
The Sword Saint fell silent.
He had been in the middle of a discussion with this esteemed human mage when, suddenly, Biden stopped speaking, lowered his head, and began dozing off.
Even after being roused, Biden seemed unaware of what was happening.
Though rumors had long circulated, witnessing it firsthand confirmed it—Biden indeed appeared to be suffering from dementia.
“Mr. Biden, I’ve come to Laurel Academy to investigate a certain matter and hope to receive the academy’s cooperation,” the Sword Saint said.
“Oh… right!”
Biden suddenly seemed to remember.
“My apologies, Sword Saint. Our headmaster is currently occupied with urgent matters and cannot meet with you personally. If there’s anything you need, you may discuss it with me.”
“I wish to know her name. She is a student of Laurel Academy.”
The Sword Saint produced a portrait—a cute black-haired girl.
It was the student from Laurel Academy who had interacted with the Doctor that day.
Since Laurel Academy was an autonomous region and not technically under the jurisdiction of the Rhine Kingdom, the Sword Saint’s authority held no sway here.
Thus, he had come in person.
Though he couldn’t leverage his influence as he could in Rhine Kingdom, he was confident that, given his status as the Human Sword Saint, Laurel Academy would oblige.
“…Huh?!”
Biden’s expression changed the moment he saw the portrait.
He knew exactly who this was—none other than the problem student of his Magic Department, Xia Yi – Lawrence.
Why was the Sword Saint inquiring about her?
“Sword Saint, are you looking for her?”
“Yes.”
The Sword Saint nodded.
He fabricated a reason.
“During the opening ceremony, I happened to meet her. She left quite an impression on me—her enthusiasm and sincerity were genuinely moving.”
“…”
“It is the expectations of others that have always driven me forward. That day, due to pressing matters, I had to leave in haste. Thus, I decided to grant her this opportunity—to respond to someone who supports me… However, I neglected to ask for her name at the time.”
He presented himself as a considerate idol, attentive to his admirers.
Though his face remained hidden behind his armor, his demeanor conveyed his sincerity.
He was certain Biden would assist him.
However—
Biden outwardly remained composed, but inwardly, his mind was in turmoil.
How did that troublemaker manage to leave such a deep impression on the Sword Saint?!
If Xia Yi were to meet the Human Sword Saint and then complain about him…
No, if that happened, his reputation would be ruined.
“My apologies, Sword Saint, but I do not recognize this student,” Biden replied.
“You don’t?”
“I’m not even certain she’s from Laurel Academy. She looks unfamiliar… Perhaps you could leave this portrait with me? I’ll have our faculty verify whether this girl is indeed one of ours.”
Biden lied without hesitation.
His plan was simple—delay the Sword Saint, stall for time, and eventually, the matter would be forgotten.
“Once we have confirmation, we’ll notify you immediately. How does that sound?”
“…Very well. Thank you for your assistance, Mr. Biden.”
The Sword Saint stood, expressed his gratitude politely, and left Biden’s office.
His subordinate, waiting outside, approached.
“How did it go, Sword Saint?”
“Mr. Biden seems to be hiding something,” the Sword Saint said quietly. “He claimed not to recognize her, yet his expression changed the moment he saw the portrait. If she were truly a stranger, that wouldn’t have happened.”
“Could it be… Mr. Biden is also conspiring against humanity, like the Doctor?”
“I cannot say for certain, but the possibility cannot be dismissed.”
“Then, Sword Saint, what if we sought out your disciple? Miss Hill is also employed at Laurel Academy,” the subordinate suggested. “She would never deceive you like Biden.”
The Sword Saint fell silent.
He knew Hill Gibran was different from Biden—she was his proud disciple, even a candidate for the title of Sacred Sword Wielder.
But unlike his other students, Hill had never shown him the reverence expected.
Whenever he approached her, she avoided him.
He doubted she would be of any help now.
“Is there another way?” the Sword Saint asked.
“Let me think…”
After a moment, the subordinate had an idea.
“Sword Saint, perhaps we could enlist the help of Laurel Academy’s students—”
—
Meanwhile…
“Where is she…? I can’t find her anywhere…”
Xia Yi was growing increasingly frustrated.
She had entered Lia’s estate to track down the Witch, but now, the Witch was nowhere to be seen.
The only thing she could sense was that the Witch hadn’t left—she was still somewhere inside.
If the Witch had truly departed, Xia Yi would have noticed.
“Xia Yi actually came to the Freshman Social…”
“I wonder who her dance partner will be? Rumor has it Senior Albert asked her but got rejected. He’s been devastated ever since—poor guy.”
“Xia Yi’s outfit is… uh, very liberated. I doubt she’ll be dancing tonight.”
Xia Yi overheard the murmurs around her.
She stuck out like a sore thumb at the social.
Everyone else was dressed in lavish attire, every one of them a picture of aristocratic refinement.
Only Xia Yi wore loose loungewear and slippers, barging into the high-class gathering like an ordinary person who had wandered in by accident.
It was impossible not to notice her.
While others agonized over their appearances, striving to be the most eye-catching presence, Xia Yi had inadvertently stolen the spotlight simply by not trying at all.
Many were whispering in amazement—Was this even allowed? How shameless!
“Ugh… Why is everyone staring at me?!” Xia Yi grumbled.
Just then, she lightly bumped into a girl passing by.
The little princess’s mind was still preoccupied with finding the Witch, so she barely registered it—until she heard a familiar voice behind her.
